That winter, my mother and my stepfather moved our family toSouthern California. My brother and I were leaving our ruralAlabamabehind. This would be our first New Year away fromAlabama. My mother took toCalifornialike a swan to a royal lake. My athletic little brother, Paul, was keyed up at a climate that allowed him to go to the beach whenever he wanted.I, however, was a fat child with heavy southern pronunciation. My first day in the new class, I introduced myself in a low voice. The moment I opened my mouth to speak, the whole class burst into laughter, “He talks funny.” It was so frustrating that I went to place a call to Granny Smith after school, who was my biggest support, But I didn’t get through. On Sunday evening, the phone rang. It was Granny. She often took advantage of the discounted long-distance rates on Sundays. She said she’d shipped a New Year package. Sure enough, it arrived. Surprised at the box, large enough to hold a small refrigerator, we eagerly tore it open. The smell of Granny’s house filled the room: a combination of fried meat, sausages, furniture polish and decorations. Her house was tiny and always filled withtackyholiday decorations and homemade food before New Year. But in my childhood eyes, it was precious and fantastic. There were countless tins and containers. We open hem to discover piles of holiday treats. She even includedour traditional candy bats. The box was as bottomless as a magical box. There, beneath all these, was familiar holiday.Every New Year that we spent inCalifornia, the postal service would call and say our package was arrived. Their living areas once included most of the continentalUnited States. But during the 1800s and early 1900s, wolves were hunted to near extinction(灭绝).By the 1960s, theU. S.wolf population was limited to a handful of creatures in small comers of the northernMidwest. Then, in 1973, a law, the ESA, was passed to protect animals from becoming extinct. Gray wolves were one of the first animals placed on the endangered-species(濒危物种)list. Killing them wasillicit. And theU. ernment worked to promote their protection. In a famous example of this effort, starting in 1995, 31 wolves were moved fromCanadatoYellowstoneNational Park. By 2015, more than 500 gray wolves were living in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem(生态系统).Today, the continentalU. S.is home to more than 6,000 gray wolves. On January 4, 2021, theU. ernment removed gray wolves from the endangered-species list.Usually, an animal's removal would be cause for celebration. But some environmental protectors say the wolves still need protection. In some parts of the country, wolves are increasing in numbers. More than a thousand of them can be found just inMichiganandWisconsin. But overall, their range is still a small part of what it was. Wolves used to live across most of the U. S. Now they , are found in fewer than a dozen states. Others argue that as long as a species is not in danger of extinction, it doesn't belong on the endangered-species list. Andfarmers with land near wolf living areas say that if the wolf's population continues to grow, more of their farm animals will be killed by wolves. But some protection groups worry that without protection, the wolf population will crash again. They hope that no matter what, people and wolves can get along peacefully with each other. They are promoting ways to make that happen.12. What caused gray wolves to be almost extinct?A. Losing their living areas.B. Too many natural enemies.C. The extreme climate changes.D. Being hunted in great numbers.13. What does the underlined word "illicit" in paragraph 2 mean?A. They have all been put into the safe natural parks.C. They have been feeding on farmers, farm animals.D. They have grown too strong to be protected by humans.15. What do farmers living near gray wolves' living areas think of the animals?A. The wolves are trouble for them.B. The wolves must be better protected.C. The wolves get along peacefully with them.D. The wolves should live where they belong.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Simultaneously, important looking envelopes containing cards with the samemessage were hand-delivered to the offices of all the major news companies. One found its way to the desk of Chris Lin, a business reporter at The Post. The card was beautifullydesigned – a black background with the words printed out in crisp white letters. There was no explanationon the back, just a website address.Chris went to the website. Its style was identical to the ca rd’s and said:“Anytime: Starting Tomorrow.”The next day websites and blogs were filled with articles theorising about Anytime. Was it a shoppingit was awebsite like Tao Bao or Amazon? A joke? Something illegal? Anytime’s marketing had worked –household name before it’d even made a single sale. When the opening came, that day at noon, the Anytime website suddenly had a single field that read,“What do you want?” All you had to do was type the words into that box, and then specify how quickly youwanted your item delivered: within one, ten, or twenty-four hours.Bloggers were the first to test the service. And their reviews were glowing. Within weeks, Anytimehad become a part of daily life. Nobody used other delivery sites or the post anymore as Anytime was muchcheaper and faster.Chris still wondered what exactly Anytime was. He tried to find out who owned the company, but itwas registered in a small country that did not require such information to be made public. He did find someinteresting facts, though. Anyone who challenged the company, it seemed, met with serious trouble. Agovernment official critical of Anytime for avoiding tax was forced to leave his position after news storiessuddenly appeared claiming he was dishonest. The head of another company taking Anytime to court diedin a car accident just days before the case was to begin.Chris began making a list of all the people who had something terrible happen to them after opposingor criticising Anytime. By lunch, he had more than one hundred examples. Something was definitely wrong.Chris worked on his list the rest of the day, emailing people who could provide more information andlooking through newspaper records. After working through the night, an exhausted Chris finally fell asleepat his desk at 4 a.m..When he woke a few hours later, there was a message flashing on his computer screen: “Stotrouble.” Chris smiled. He had no intention of stopping now that he knew he was on the right track.28. What was on the front of the card sent to Chris Lin?A. An invitation to a company opening.B. The website address of a new company.C. The words “Anytime:Starting tomorrow”.D. The words “Anything you want, anytime you need it”.29. Why did the company choose to send the cards to many news reporters?A. Because it didn’t have enough money for traditional advertising.B. Because it wanted to attract the reporters as customers.C. So the reporters would write stories about the new company.D. So people would find the new company interesting.30. What did Chris’ s research suggest aboutAnytime?A. It may be very dangerous.B. Its popularity would soon decrease.C. It was doing business all over the world.D. It was being widely criticised by journalists.31. How did Chris feel at the end of the story?A. Scared that he would get into trouble.B. Confident that he would find the truth.C. Nervous about what the company would do.D. Satisfied that he had discovered the company’s secret.DConnecting with people has become so much easier with advancing technology. Tasks that oncerequired a postage stamp or carrier pigeon are now as simple as tapping a name or even a face on yourscreen, and you’re connected. But also easier is unconsciously getting caught up in a dilemma by violatingcertain new r ules for communicating. A big one for some: Don’t call until you’ve texted to confirm it to call. But that’s just the beginning.“I’m usually pretty mild and not much bothers me,” said Mark Angielle, a 29-year-old office managerfrom White Plains, New York. But the one thing that he hates more than anything else in life is the terribleone-word message —“K.”“At the very least reply with, Got it.” he said “At least give me a few where. You’re not that busy.”There are hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of others who have taken Lo social media to expresstheir distaste for people who don’t follow the unwritten rules of digital communication.“These rules are simply a new display of a phenomenon we’ve seen in the past,” said James professor of communication a Virginia Tech. In the same way that generations and small groups of friendshave their own slang and customs, internet culture has given birth to technology-dependent beings thathave their own unique set of routine. But not everyone gets the point. Unlike language, digital communication can be filled with ambiguousclues (线索、迹象) that the person on the other end of the call, text or email may or may not easilyunderstand.“As soon as people aren’t talking face to face, the first thing that gets lost is some of the richness ofly fill that gap by using emoji (表情符号) to sum up athe body language,” Ivory said, “People immediatefeeling in seconds.“There's great potential for danger,” Ivory warned. “What's considered polite in one form might be inappropriate or rude in another occasion.”32. 21.(6分)It is a question people have been asking for ages. Is there a way to turn back the aging process? For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth.” The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink from its waters, you will not age. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon searched for waters with magical powers in the early 1500s. But what he found instead is the American state of Florida.Researchers in New York did not find an actual fountain of youth, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears the answer may be hidden right between your eyes, in an area called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is part of your brain. It controls important activities within the body. Cai Dongsheng, a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, found that hypothalamusstem cells influence how fast aging takes place in the body as well. He also reported that when the hypothalamus starts aging, so does the body.“So when hypothalamus function is in decline, pa rticularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, and this protection against the aging development is lost, it eventually leads to aging.”Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate (激活) or energize the hypothalamus inlaboratory mice. They did this by injecting (注射) the animals with stem cells. Later, the researchers examined tissues and tested for changes in behavior. They looked for changes in the strength of the animals’ muscles. They also studied the social behavior and cognitive (认知) ability of the mice. The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals. Cai says injecting middle-aged mice with stem cells from younger mice helped the older animals live longer. These findings could lead to new ways to help doctors identify and treat any number of health issues concerning aging problems. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? This is the question Cai and his team are thinking about.1、What did Juan Ponce de Leon find?A.The American state of Florida.B.Magical powers.C.A Fountain of youth.D.A way to stop the aging process.2、What do we know about the hypothalamus?A.It is located in the eyes.B.It starts aging due to the increase of its stem cells.C.It plays a key role in controlling the aging process.D.It functions well when the body starts aging.3、What did the researchers do during the experiment?A.They strengthened the muscles of the mice.B.They examined tissues and tested the behaviour of mice.C.They injected the stem cells into the younger mice.D.They changed the social behavior and cognitive ability of the mice.4、What would the researchers probably do next?A.Inject stem cells of mice into humans.B.Research on the cognitive psychology.C.Help the mice live longer.D.See if anti-aging effects also work in human beings.22.(8分)Police Force presents Community Roadshow 2019Want to find out more about police work? If someone says youcan’t, then prove them wrong. When I first started I couldn’t do a single proper pushup and I was out of breath after walking up the basement stairs. Instead of giving up and saying it was hopeless, I decided to struggle against what the doctors had to say about my future. It wasn’t fun at first. In fact, it was extreme suffering. The first 2-3 years were spent just getting myself to the point where most healthy young men would merely start from. It was only after years of hard work and patience that I began gaining a considerable amount of muscle and strength. When I finally got to the point of feeling good about myself and my body for the first time in my life, my body decided to give me the finger once again. I developed severe ulcerative colitis (溃疡性结肠炎) and lost it all. The child who once was extremely overweight was now the man who looked like a cancer survivor.I went from 210 pounds fairly fit to 160 pounds of skin and bone within 2-3 months.Once again, I worked my way back up to where I once was and run more and more for greater distances and longer periods. Now t at 205 pounds and nearing middle aged, I am the fittest I have ever been in my life.I am not sharing this story in order to talk big. I am only hoping that my story will encourage someone who is struggling like I was to step up and take their life and their health into their hands. Never give up! IfI can do it, then anyone can.1、What did the author decide to do according to paragraph 1?A.Be a professional athlete. B.Follow the doctors’ advice.C.Set the doctors’ advice aside. A winter storm had hit overnight too. I tried to open my backdoor only to find six inches of wet, heavy snow piled up against it. I knew I had quite a job of shoveling out ahead of me, so I reached over to grab my snow shovel. It looked a lot more ready to work than I did. I sighed and pulled on my boots, gloves, and heavy coat. The wind chill was below zero and cut into my face as I slowly shoveled off my deck. After that I stayed my way over to my daughter’s house shoveling the path as I walked. It took a while to get her driveway clear and I knew I still had a lot to do. Next came the paths down the hill to my own cars covered in snow. I had grabbed the broom to sweep them off as well. I winced when the breeze blew the swept snow back into my face. Then I started to shovel out my driveways. My back was aching as I worked. I wished I could be building a snowman instead of shoveling. Winter sure had seemed a lot more fun when I was a boy. When I was done I examined my work. It didn’t look halfbad. I smiled and looked at the woods covered in white. They were such a special sight. I leaned on my shovel and took it all in. Then I started up the hill with the snow shovel in one hand and the broom in the other. Suddenly, an urge came over me and I dropped them both. I spread my arms, fed back into the blanket of white and happily moved my arms and legs to make an angel in the snow.As you go through the seasons of this life take joy in your work. The runners were observed on a treadmill machine (跑步机). Sometimes they wore running shoes. Other times they ran barefoot.Researchers from the JKM Technologies Company in Virginia, the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado did the study. They found that running shoes create more stress that could damage knees, hips and ankle joints than running barefoot. They observed that the effect was even greater than the effect reported earlier for walking in high heels. The study appeared in the official scientific journal of the American Academy of Physical Medicine. The other study appeared in the journal Nature. It compared runners in the United States and Kenya. The researchers were from Harvard University in Massachusetts, Moi University in Kenya and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. They divided the runners into three groups. One group had always run shoeless. Another group had always run with shoes. And the third group had changed to shoeless running.Runners who wear shoes usually come down heel first. That puts great force on the back of the foot. But the study found that barefoot runners generally land on the front or middle of their foot. That way they ease into their landing and avoid striking their heel.Harvard’s Daniel Lieberman led the study. He says the way most running shoes are designed may explain why those who wear them land on their heels. The heel of the shoe is bigger and heavier than other parts of the shoe, so it would seem more likely to come down first. Also, the heel generally has thick material under it to soften landings. But the researchers do not suggest that runners immediately start running barefoot. They say it takes some training. And there can be risks, like running when your feet are too cold to feel ifyou get injured. The study was partly supported by Vibram, which makes a kind of footwear that it says is like running barefoot. The findings have gotten a lot of attention. But the researchers say there are many problems in the way the press has reported in their paper. So they have tried to explain their findings on a Harvard Website.1、What can we learn from the passage?A.The way that we run by landing on the front or middle of our foot could avoid damaging our heel. B.We should start running barefoot in no time.C.Running in modem running shoes could have more serious effects than running in high heels.D.We won’t be injured if we run barefoot.2、How many organizations are involved in the two studies?A.Three. B.Four.C.Five. D.Six.3、How did the researchers do the two studies?A.By practising. B.By comparing.C.By questioning. D.By reasoning.4、What is the main idea of the passage?A.Walking in high heels could have fewer serious effects than running barefoot.B.Two new discoveries encourage people to run in high heels.C.Running in shoes is partly good to runners.D.Two new studies prove running without shoes is beneficial to runners in most cases.第三部分语言知识运用(共两节)第一节(每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.26.(30分)Yassi was a very capable student.
