Good afternoon everybody! My name is Kongji, it's my honor to speak here and I am very glad to share my research with all of you. My major is environmental science and I am studying in the Key Laboratory of Soil Environmental and Waste Reuse in Agriculture of Guangdong Higher Education Institutes. Sewage sludge utilization is my main research field, and I will introduce it to you in the following text.
Sewage sludge is a worldwide-recognized potential resource. With ample nutrient elements, it can facilitate the growing of crops and improve the structure of soil, and finally can realize the circulation of matter. However, there are also many toxic substances in this resource, which have hampered the applicant of sewage sludge, such as heavy metal, persistent organic pollutant, pathogenic bacteria and so on. Therefore, in relevant field, searching a convenient and low-cost pretreat method to decrease the poisonousness of sewage sludge is becoming an advanced research hotspot. My research is to take advantage of sewage sludge in agriculture by two simple ways. Currently, I am utilizing the sewage sludge on cultivating cucumber and pennisetumhydridum. In cucumber, sewage sludge is packed in a mesh bag which can reduce the heavy metals that run off from sewage sludge. And in the pennisetumhydridum, I cultivated it near a gutter that I have filled in sewage sludge, using the soil to buffer the injury from the heavy metals.
By this two simple process, I want to make certain the removal of heavy metals in the sewage sludge. And in the future, for reducing its heavy metals, I am likely to use some other method to dispose the sewage sludge such as electro-chemical method or biological method.
