His ships were called "treasure ships" and were huge, up to 500 feet long. That's over 4 times longer than Christopher Columbus' ships which came later. Zheng He's flagship ship was bright blue and 9 stories high!The first voyage in 1405 went from China down to Indonesia, Singapore, and up to Vietnam and Thailand. The second voyage in 1407 went across the Indian Ocean all the way to India and Sri Lanka. The third in 1409 made it to the east coast of Africa!On these voyages, Zheng He and his enormous crew would trade for things like porcelain, silk, precious stones, and rare plants and animals to bring back to the Chinese emperor. They would also show off China's incredible wealth and power with their gigantic "treasure ships." Sometimes they would make friends with local rulers and leave behind stone landmarks carved with text describing their visits.My favorite story is how on the fourth voyage in 1413, Zheng He's ships were caught in a huge storm near Sri Lanka. One of his ships got separated in the storm and was captured by the local kingdom there. However, the quick-thinking Zheng He took some porcelain, silk, and other treasures off another ship and traded it to get his captured crew members back! He was tough but also smart and peaceful, trying to avoid battles when possible.After the fourth voyage in 1415, Zheng He returned home briefly before going out for voyage number five in 1417. This time his fleet sailed way past the east coast of Africa, likely making it all the way around the southern tip to the west coast as well! They may have even reached places like Mozambique and Kenya. He was getting close to Europe but turned back for home in 1419 after reaching as far west as they could go.In 1424, Zheng He's sixth voyage went back across the Indian Ocean toward the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia. It's believed some of his ships made it all the way up to the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea!Sadly, Zheng He's final seventh voyage in 1431 was cut short when he got sick and had to return home to China in 1433. He also ordered alchemists to experiment with special potions and herbs that might grant everlasting life. Unfortunately, they never found a real elixir of life.One of the most incredible things about Qin Shi Huang is his mausoleum, the gigantic tomb where he was buried after he died in 210 BC. It was an underground palace surrounded by life-sized terracotta warrior statues. Over 8,000 of these detailed soldier figures have been uncovered so far, along with horses and chariots for the emperor's use in the afterlife.The tomb itself is still underground and hasn't been fully excavated yet. Archaeologists used special sensors and found hints that it may contain rivers of mercury representing rivers and the sea! There could also be treasures of jade, bronze, gold,and other precious materials inside.
