Choose the bes answe and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneTo us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. Butactually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shadeAgainst the sun.Nobody knows who firs invented it,but the umbrella was used in very ancient times.Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, and it was back in the eleventh century B.C.We know thet the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in high offices. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against rain were the ancient Romans.During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France and later on in England.By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe.Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that women’s umbrellas began to be made ina whole variety of colors.21.The first use of umbrella was as .A. protection against rainB. a shade against the sunC. a symbol of powerD. a symbol of honor22.It is possible that were the people who first used umbrellas.A. ChineseB. RomansC. GreeksD. Egyptians23.The umbrella was used only by royalty or by those in high offices _A. in Europe in the 18th centuryB. in ancient Egypt and BabylonC. in the Far East in ancient timesD. during the Middle AgesPassage TwoMuch has been written about poverty but none of the accounts seem to get at the root of the problem. It must be noted that the debilitating effects of poverty are not only the result of lack ofmoney but are also the result of powerlessness. The poor are subject to their social situationinstead of being able to affect it through action, that is, through behavior that flows from anindividual's decisions and plans. In other words, when social scientists have reported on the psychological consequences of poverty, it seems reasonable to believe that they have described the psychological consequences of powerlessness. The solution to poverty most frequently suggestedis to help the poor secure more money without otherwise changing the present power relationships. This appears to implement the idea of equality while avoiding any unnecessary threat to theestablished centers of power. But since the consequences of poverty are related to powerlessness, not to the absolute supply of money available to the poor, and since the amount of powerpurchasable with a given supply of money decreases as a society acquires a large supply of goodsand services, the solution of raising the incomes of the poor is likely, unless accompanied by other measures, to be ineffective in a wealthy society. In order to reduce poverty - related psychological and social problems in the United States, the major community will have to change its relationship to neighborhoods of poverty insuch fashion that families in the neighborhoods have a greater interest in the broader society andcan more successfully participate in the decision-making process of the surrounding community.Social action to help the poor should have the following characteristics: the poor should seethemselves as the source of the action; the action should effect in major ways the preconceptionsof institutions and persons who define the poor; the action should demand much in effect or skill:the action should be successful and the successful self-originated important action should increasethe feeling of potential worth and individual power of individuals who are poor. The only initial resource which a community should provide to neighborhoods of povertyshould be on a temporary basis and should consist of organizers who will enable theneighborhoods quickly to create powerful, independent, democratic organizations of the poor.Through such organizations, the poor will then negotiate with the outsiders for resources and opportunities without having to submit to concurrent control from outside.24.By "powerless" (sentence 2, Para l), the author most probably means that the poor .A. have no right to make individual decisions and plansB. can not exercise control over other groups of peopleC. are not in a condition to change their present situationD. are too weak to resist any social situation imposed on them25.The author expresses his opinion in the first paragraph thatA. the hopeless condition of the poor is caused by their powerlessness rather than lack ofmoneyB. great efforts should be made to help poor to secure more money without changing presentpower relationshipsC. it is no use raising the incomes of the poor while not improve their state of powerlessnessD. in helping the poor attention should be paid to avoiding any unnecessary threat to theestablished centers of power26.Social action to help the poor should have the characteristics includeA. the poor should see themselves as the source of the actionB. the action should effect in major ways preconceptions ofinstitutionsC. the action should demand much in effect or skillD. all of the above27.According to the author, the primary role of the major community in helping the neighborhoods of poverty isA. to provide long-term assistance from outsideB. to offer necessary opportunities of securing more moneyC. to carry out more social programs in the neighborhoodsD. to lend experienced advice in the formation of democratic self-help organizations28. What does the word "concurrent" (Para. 3) most probably mean?A. Following.B. Subsequent.C. Previous.D. Simultaneous.29.The main purpose of the author in writing the passage is .A. to criticize the present methods employed to help the poorB. to analyze the social and psychological aspects of povertyC. to propose a way in which the poor can be more effectively helpedD. to describe the attitude of the community towards the poorPassage ThreeThe fitness movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s centered around aerobii exercise(有氧操).Millions of individuals became engaged in a variety of aerobic activities, am literally thousands of health spas developed around the country to capitalize on this emergin; interest in fitness, particularly aerobic dancing for females. A number of fitness spas existed prioto this aerobic fitness movement, even a national chain with spas in most major cities. Howevei their focus was not on aerobics, but rather on weight-training programs designed to deveIoJ muscular mass, strength, and endurance in their primarily male enthusiasts. These fitness spas di< not seem to benefit financially from the aerobic fitness movement to better health, since medica opinion suggested that weight-training programs offered few, if any, health benefits. In recent year however, weight training, has again become increasingly popular for males and for females. Man: current programs focus not only on developing muscular strength and endurance but on aerobii fitness as well.Historically, most physical-fitness tests have usually included measures of muscular strengtl and endurance, not for health-related reasons, but primarily because such fitness components havi been related to performance in athletics. However, in recent years, evidence has shown thatraining programs designed primarily to improve muscular strength and endurance might also offe some health benefits as well. The American College of Sports Medicine now recommends tha weight training be part of a total fitness program for healthy Americans. Increased participation ii such training is one of the specific physical activity and fitness obj ectives of Healthy People 2000 National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives.30.The word "spas" (Line 3, Para. 1) most probably refers toA. sports activitiesB. places for physical exerciseC. recreation centersD. athletic training programs31.Early fitness spas were intended mainly forA. the promotion of aerobic exerciseB. endurance and muscular developmentC. the improvement of women's figuresD. better performance in aerobic dancing32.What was the attitude of doctors towards weight training in health improvement?A. Positive.B. Indifferent.C. Negative.D. Usually they are mixedtogether and can't be told from one another. But many of them still talk about where theirancestors came from. It is something they are proud of.The original Americans, of course were the Indians. The so-called white men who then camewere mostly from England. But many came from other countries like Germany and France. One problem the United States has always had is discrimination. As new groups came to theUnited States they found they were discriminated against. First it was the Irish and Italians. Laterit was the blacks. Almost every group has been able to finally escape this discrimination. The only immigrants who have not are the blacks. Surprisingly enough the worst discrimination today isshown towards the Indians. One reason the Indians are discriminated against is that they have tried so hard to keep their identity. Of course they are not the only ones who have done so. The Japanese have their LittleTokyo in Los Angeles and the Chinese a Chinatown in New York. The Dutch settlement inPennsylvania also stays separate from other people. Their towns are like something from the 19th century. They have a different reason from the other groups for staying separately. They liveseparately for religious reasons rather than keep together in a racial group.Although some groups have kept themselves separate and others have been discriminatedagainst, all groups have helped make the United States a great country. There is no group that hasnot helped in some way. And there is no group that can say they have done the most to make it agreat country. Many people still come from other countries to help the United States grow. A good example is the American project that let a man walk on the moon. It was a scientist from Germany who wasmost responsible for doing that. There are about 105 males born for every 100 females, but this ratio drops to near balance at the age of maturity, and among 70-year- olds thereare twice as many women as men. But the great universal of male mortality is being changed. Now, boy babies survive almost as well as girls do. This means that, for the first time, there will be an excess of boys in those crucial years when they are searching for a mate. More important, another chance for natural selection has been removed. Fifty years ago, the chance of a baby (particularly a boy baby) surviving depended on its weight. A kilogram too light or too heavymeant almost certain death. Today it makes almost no difference.

C.coffee is a stimulant.

The case of the disappearing fingerprints抄到字典上Case单词所在的页码的空白处,其次找到题目中空格处抄下前后词,第一题的答案选则B.them,所以要抄的就是前词Losing +空格处them +后词could,以下题目抄法以此类推。
