My impression on Vanity FairVanity Fair is the nineteen-century British novelist William Makepeace Thackeray’s most famous work and also one of the most famous British satirical novels of critical realism. In the story, Amelia Sedley, from a good family, and Rebecca Sharp, an orphan, leave Miss Pinkerton's academy on Chiswick Mall to live out their lives in Vanity Fair —the world of social climbing and search for wealth. Amelia does not esteem the values of Vanity Fair; Rebecca cares for nothing else. Rebecca becomes snobbish and complicated in order to climb out of poverty.She toys and flirts with any prospective ladder through which she could ascend to the upper class. But she also loses a lot, like her beloved husband ,during her pursuit of wealth and status. Finally,Rebecca and Amelia live a simple life away from the vanity fair.The most impressive part of the novel is the sentence said by Rebecca ‘’If I had 5,000 pounds, I would be a good woman. ‘’For many readers, Rebecca is a bad woman and she gets overwhelming contempt and condemnation. On the other hand, Amelia is kind and generous and she is favored by the majority. But considering the reality of the society at that time, we can not easily judge them as bad or good person, just like th e original name of the novel ‘’A Novel Without a Hero ‘’In some aspect ,their characters are determined by the society. Rebecca is born in a poor family. Although she is smart ,good at French and well-behaved, she is always disrespected just because of her poor background and low status. When she was at Amelia’s home as a governess ,Amelia’s brother Joseph loved her ,but George Osborn persuaded him not to marry her for she was a governess and he dosen’t want a governess for a sister- in-law. And Joseph was convinced.The upper people ,though behaving well, regard status and wealth the most important. Rebecca well knows the misery of poverty and she is fed up with it, so she gets unscrupulous to get to the upper class. Although she was mean and snobbish, some people also like her for her coverage and intelligence. She, as a young woman, deals with all the men and women by herself. In addition, she told Amelia that George Osborne was notworthwhile for her to love, although it hurts Amelia. From it, we can see Rebecca is frank and good to her friend.On the contrary, Amelia is considered kind and generous for most of us. But she is not that good. At first, she is really kind-hearted and loves Osborne heart and soul , but I think in that society, she is kind of naive and innocent which only bring her harm and hurt. After her father is bankrupt, Osborne is forbidden to marry her by his father, so he left her and even induces Rebecca. We can easily learn that he is not that into Amelia. But Amelia does not believe it and put too much into the relationship, which only means hurt to herself. Also, she overlooks William Dobbin’s for all the years. And after the death of Osborne,she leads a very poor life with her son. When she finally can’t stand the poor life, she choos es to take advantage of Dobbin’love and lead a better life. This also shows her selfishness. From all above, we can see nobody is perfect in the novel, and we can not simply classify them as good or bad.The story shows the rottenness of the society at that time, but I think this kind of rottenness also exists in our society, especially in the upper world among the celebrities, especially the stars. I know nowadays many people wants to be stars. They want to be respected and admired by a lot of people, and also live a luxury life. So they do everything they can to get attention. Some get famous by money, and others even choose to be famous by having a relationship with the director so that they can get a chance to be in a movie or play and get popularity. This may sounds humiliating,but it’s not rare in the entertaining field. What’s more, among the famous stars, there are always some conflicts. They compete against each other for money or status. In fact, this phenomenon is not only in one field, but also in other fields.Just like people in the Vanity Fair, nowadays people are selfish and snobbish,too. That’s because people attach too much importance to the wealth and status. But we can’t just blame it on people. The rottenness is ubiquitous in the whole soc iety. So if the individuals don’t behave according to the reality and disciplines, they would suffer losses.Vanity Fair is like a mirror, and it reflects the reality of the society clearly and directly. It also reminds us of our society. We may be shocked by the darkness of the human beings. What we should do is not to blame but to reflect on ourselves and try to be more merciful and righteous. As a matter of fact, we are living in such place today. We gradually become the participants of this fair and loyal followers of these hollow things. Espencially our moderngrils’ changing view toward marriage, money and social status. They believe that they could easily live a life like a grand lady without making any efforts if they marry a wealthy man. As female college students, how to stick to our own belief and aviod being assimilated by the complex society, Thackeray’s novel Vanity Fair could give us a good instruction. Through the Rebacca’s attitude towards money, social status and marriage, I realize what is most important thingfor a female.Thackeray described the life of ruling classes of England in the early decades of the 19th century, and attacked the social relationship of bourgeois world by satirizing the individuals in the different strata of the upper society. Rebacca（becky） Sharp is a classic example of the money-grubbing instinct. Her only aspiration in life is to gain wealth and position by any means. Thackeray does not regard Rebacca as an exception. Everyone wishes to gain something in the Vanity Fair and acts almost in the same manner as Rebacca.As an orphan, Rebacca’s birth can easily win our tears. It is an undenible fact that she is quite an ambitious and clever girl. As far as I am concerned, she could easily live a decent life with her own hand. However, for the people in the upper class, Rebacca’s humble birth cuold never be erased even though she married a rich man. In other’s eye, she was just a coquette who was quite good at suducing rich men. Why not use your own hand to create a bright future and win others’ true respect instead of relying on the man’s shoulder.Rebacca liveed in a society which is ruled by money, everyone was crazy about money, Rebacca was no exception. She held the dream of living a life of a grand lady, wearing luxurious clothes and shining dimonds. In order to realize her dream, she used all kinds of immoral means to win the love of rich men. Finally, she got married with Rawdon Crawley, a good man who will inherit a large sum of money from her ant. However, the old lady refused because Crawley married Rebacca---a woman of low social status. Rebacca and her husband live a quite luxurious life in Pairs even though they could not make the both ends meet. Finally, Mr.Crawley was put in to prison because of heavy debets, while Rebacca started searching for another rich man who can pay for her luxurious bills. “Poverty ”is never an ennobling experience
---- an analysis of two types of “poverty ”contained in the
novel
Almost every novel is subject to the scrutiny of reader s 'preferences. Probably for some psychological reason, we readers often feel inclined to scout in a novel for a protagonist who can feed our desire to fix affection on someone. Then a bitter chasm between our favorite and other overshadowed characters subtly emerges and gradually gets increasingly unbridgeable. Just like in Vanity Fair , Amelia Sedley, all grace and generosity, never fails to become a magnet for the vast majority of readers while seemingly as a rule, Becky Sharp, snobbish and sophisticated, only gets besieged by overwhelming contempt and apparently justified condemnation. In order to climb out of poverty, Becky turned herself into a mean girl, toying and flirting with any prospective “ladder ”by which she could ascend to the upper class. In this sense, Becky 's cunning stemmed from material poverty which failed to inoculate her against the giddy heights of vanity. However, despite being born of an affluent family, Amelia also suffered from abject poverty derived from her lack of a worthwhile life goal to live and contend for. In my following demonstration, I 'd like to expatiate on these two types of poverty.
Frankly speaking, throughout the novel, Becky wins my most appreciation. The impoverished family background divested her of ingenuous feelings towards the society where only money talked, rendering her vulnerable to disdain and
