People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive, researchers found.Scientists at St Andrews University found eating them slightly increased yellow and red pigments in the volunteers' skin. They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks.Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look more healthy and an extra 3.3 portions could enhance their attractiveness, when their photographs were rated by others.Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids (类胡萝卜素),which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent agerelated diseases including heart disease and cancer. But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange,it was not known a small increase was perceptible (被觉察) to others and was seen as appealing.A camera measured changes to the skin's redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These changes were not evident in three ing light sensors, the researchers showed these red and yellow hues were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin. There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene(番茄红素),which gives tomatoes and redpeppers their red colour and betacarotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach.Skin colour is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多元酚),found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to theskin surface.1.What do we know from the research?A.If you take in a little more fruit and vegetables, you will obviously lookmore attractive in three weeks.B.The researchers took the pictures of 35 people in the research at differentstages.C.Increasing your intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day can greatly improveyour health.D.People who increased their intake of greens by 3.3 portions a day were foundthe most attractive after six weeks.2.Which of the following is NOT the any large city, you'll find a coffee shop on every corner. Many shops offer comfortable sofas, large screen televisions and sometimes even live music.More and more teenagers are hanging out there. My preteen has already done so after school once a month but she always orders fruit juice.I think she would drink coffee sooner or later,so I started doing some research online.I found out that coffee in moderation can be safe. But one thing that was constant online was the chance of becoming addicted to coffee.Coffee is one step up from soda but still, not as dangerous as energy drinks or alcohol.Still, any addiction is hard to break. So I needed to come up with a plan that would protect my child.Coffee shops offer a safe place for teens to hang out.As like anything else you let your children do,you need to set limits.Drinking coffee while socializing once or twice a week will not cause a severe caffeine addiction. However, you should avoid allowing a cup of coffee every morning and ensure they get adequate sleep each night, which will make them less likely to feel the need to drink coffee. As parents we have responsibility to set a good example. If you're addicted to caffeine,it's time to start monitoring your intake. If you drink much water and keep healthier drink options in your fridge and at your dinner table, your teen will follow you.I drink much water and so do both my children.My_kids_learn_more_from_watching_me_do_things_than_they_will_ever_lear n_from_my_verbal_teaching.As a mother,I'm ready to allow my child to try coffee, and we'll talk about it and discuss the He was the captain of the American ship Maersk Alabama that was hijacked(劫持)by Somali pirates in April 2009.He says his ba ckground in Somalia helped him win the part. “I was born in Somalia.I left Somalia when I was seven years old, and I witnessed the war. Astronomythe science of the stars Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2014·湖南十校联考)Fernando and I were arguing about why I never took any real vacations. When he suggested we go off somewhere for three entire weeks,“You decide.〞 I said.He chose a little fishing village off the coast and he planned out a schedule. Our trip was full of wonder and fun,but when we got there, the shabby hotel failed to satisfy us,so we left a day early for the beach. As we drove,we passed two orphanages(孤儿院).Christmas was only a few days away, and I felt that I should stop to do something for the children. Then Fernando came up with a plan to help the poor children we saw.We made a list of names, and then we went into town to buy new clothes, toys, and school supplies. For the rest of the day,we filled backpacks. We were excited about the celebration we had planned for the next day,December 26,when we'd invite the families to the beach in front of the hotel and hand out the presents.Fernando and I were still in bed at around 9∶00 the next morning when we heard a cracking sound.“What is that?〞 I asked. As if in response, water started pouring into our room. The children's backpacks we had arranged so neatly on the floor began floating around. The next thing I knew was that the roof was torn off,and Fernando and I were swept out.I thought I was going to die.Under the water,I forced myself to calm down and then I popped out.Suddenly I saw Fernando only four feet away.“What just happened?〞 I asked Fernando.“Tsunami(海啸)!〞he shouted to me.“Just be strong.Whatever it was,〞 he told me,“it's all over now.〞 But a few seconds later, another wave buried us.I triedto grab him as he reached out to me,but he fell back under the water, and I never saw him again.1.What can we learn about the trip?A.Fernando often argued with the author about for the beach early because________.A.they were afraid of being lateB.the hotel disappointed themC.they wanted to be there ahead of othersD.they wanted to do something for the children3.When did the days ago,my car was not running well.I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic fixed it in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine sound.I was amazed. The sad truth is that great talent is not enough.I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn.I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $ 100,000 a year.A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade told me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase,“They are one skill away from great wealth.〞There is an old saying that goes,“JOB means ‘Just Over Broke’〞.Andunfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people.Because schools do not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers “live_within_their_means〞.They work and they pay the bills.Instead I recommend that young people seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn. When I ask the classes I teach,“How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald's?〞 almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald's makes more money than you?〞 The answer is obvious:McDonald's is excellent at business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.5.The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that________.A.he is just one of the talented peopleB.he is ready to help othersC.he has a sharp sense of hearingD.he knows little about car repairing6.The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced work hard enough.B.They lack financial intelligence.C.They don't make full use of their talents.D.They have no specialized skills.8.The main purpose of the author is to tell us________.A.how young people can find a satisfactory jobB.what schools should teach about financeC.why so many talented people are poorD.how McDonald's makes much moneyⅡ.七选五补缺题Raising Confident KidsSelfesteem(自尊)is a 【高考领航】(课标版)2015届高三英语一轮复习辅导与测试 第1部分 Unit 4 Making the news 新人教版必修5
Making the newsⅠ. AA new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily,it is a bad thing for young people.Puppy love (早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression(抑郁症).The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”.According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”,this“loss of self”is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls.Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won't tell that to their parents.Dr Marianm Kaufman,an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing.Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early.During growing up,it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should stimulate their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.Parents should watch for signs of depression- eating or mood changes-and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age.Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity (成熟)gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.1.What's the main idea of the passage?A.Puppy love may bring young people depression.B.Parents should forbid their children's love.C.Romance is a twoedged sword for adults.D.Romance is good for young people.2.Which of the following is more likely to have depression?A.Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness.B.Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.C.Young girls who always hide their feelings andopinions.D.Careless parents whose children are deep in love.3.The underlined word in Paragraph 3 means______.A.encourage B.forbidC.expect D.force4.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.B.Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.C.Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.D.The older a woman is,the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.BThey can be seen more frequently than ever before on college campuses, wearing flannel(法兰绒)and thickframed glasses while listening to music. One might find them playing unusual musical instruments, shopping at secondhand stores or expressing themselves in other unique ways. They call themsel ves hipsters.Being “hip” used to mean following the latest fashion. But gradually the word has become a sign of “being cool, unique and unusual”.Hipsters value independent thinking, progressive politics,an appreciation of creativity and intelligence.Hipsters take pains and pride in not being mainstream. However, their culture has become quite trendy. This irony(讽刺)is central to their culture and offers an interesting conflict.“I do take things in the mainstream with a positive attitude,” says Ben Polson,a college student at Brown University.“But sometimes I also question what determines popularity, especially regarding music.” Polson represents many hipsters. When lessknown bands become popular, they often lose their former fan base in exchange for a new one. There is a famous hipster saying that goes,“I used to like that band before it got popular,” Polson quoted.According to Polson, bands' music changes when they go mainstream. They become less experimental, doing things just to save popularity and fans. The original elements that we were drawn to slowly disappear for the sake of popularity. Many young adults have started to view hipsters' outlook as cool and they areadopting hipsters' antimainstream culture mind to themselves. This has led to specialized brands, stores and music for the hipster consumers. But on the other hand, some such stores, including clothing labels Urban Outfitters and American Apparel, have gained mainstream popularity. This has seemingly made the antimainstream culture become weaker.“A lot of people that are selfdefined hipsters aren't really hipsters. They're just trying to act as hipsters to seem cooler,” says Amanda Leopold,a college student from Oberlin College,US.Although Leopold has many unusual tastes and seems quite individualist, she refuses to classify herself as a hipster.5.In the passage, hipsters refer to people________.A.who are fans of pop musicB.who study in different collegesC.who appear cool and unusualD.who try to attract others6.According to the author,________.A.hipsters are the pioneers of the mainstreamB.hipsters are unhappy with the mainstreamC.hipsters' culture exists mainly in music fieldD.hipsters' culture can also become popular7.What is the main idea of the seventh paragraph?A.Urban Outfitters and American Apparel are famous clothing labels.B.Hipster consumers have more specialized brands, stores and music.C.Antimainstream culture can gain mainstream popularity.D.The culture of hipsters is becoming more and more terrible.8.When describing hipsters, the author speaks________.A.in an ironic voice B.in an objective voiceC.in an angry voice D.in a funny voiceⅡ. Everyone loves a party but when you're the SharingⅠ. AA good friend of mine was complaining about her son the otherday.“Did you notice,〞she started,“how he didn't wait for meto get my salad before he dove into his?〞True enough, the boy attacked his plate faster than a cat in the wild.Without manners,we're no more than animals.Actually, that's not true.I've been watching and feeding a group of wild cats, and they show unusual politeness toward each other.Even when food is scarce, they take turns, leaving at least a small part for the next in line.My mother educated her three children to have good manners all the time.We were made to feel very uncomfortable as if we were sitting on pins and needles until we got used to saying please, thank you, pardon me,and I'm sorry. And I have to say, while it was a painful learning experience,it was one of the most valuable experiences.I can't tell you how often I sat with my friends, eating at their dinner tables, and their parents thought highly of my good manners. While it was a little embarrassing,I knew even then that my mother's teachings were paying off. Many years later, when I was attending seminars across the country,my manners were quite useful. While I regret that I haven't been a perfect example,I'm still working on it.I suppose,in this regard,my mother lives on through me.I didn't have her beautiful singing voice or her green eyes, but she did make sure I received one of her finest characteristics.1.What did the writer's friend most probably complain about?A.Her son's eating too quickly.B.Her son's not having a healthy diet.C.Her son's not having good she lay there in the hospital bed,I stared at her sunken face. Her mouth hung open and a moan(呻吟声)escaped every so often,an old woman well beyond her 71 years. In four months this is what she has become-daily exercising, strongwilled, world traveling woman has been eaten from the inside out by cancer.Four months! It is a shock that's difficult for me to wrap my brain around. It makes me want to tell everyone I love them.I study her face and will her to open her eyes. What will I say if she does?In the 20 years I have known this woman, and I have struggled to understand her, battled her opinions, endured her criticisms, and loved her son beyond measure.I think of all the times I have wanted to make her disappear. All the times I thought about what I would feel when she was gone.Relief, joy, guilt,or nothing?I think my children saved me from truly hating her.Earlier that day,I watched my 12yearold son Austin, who she loved fiercely, sitting by her bed and studied her face searching for his beloved “Bubbe〞 and wondering if she'd ever return. He once caught her awake and looked her right in the eye, saying,“I love you Bubb e.I hope you get better.〞 His words pierced my heart for I know she is not getting better.Would she hear my silent plea and open her eyes? She is so stubborn, and never cares what others think. My mind wanders through the past twenty years.I realize how fragile she was when we first met only one month after her husband had died suddenly.Remembering a story she told me about her husband bringing her daffodils(水仙花)makes me see her through his eyes.I think of the love and attention she showers on my sons and I see her through their eyes. Her stories of her childhood and her father's unstable income make me see why she pushes my husband to 【思路点拨】 1.

He has worked here for two hours. He has been working here for two hours. He has worked here. He has been working here.
I have been writing the letter since then. We have been studying for nearly 3 hours.

1.But environmentalists have an opposite opinion.

; second...或 on the one hand...;on 以增强文章的条理性。 the other hand...
如:see,hear,know,have,like,be 等。 (×)He has been having a cold for two weeks. (√)He has had a cold for two weeks. 2.
