A former cabinet minister once infamously described the homeless as "the people you stepover when you're coming out of the opera." As reprehensible a joke as it is, his words areabout to be thrown back at him, or rather sung back, by the kind of people he once steppedover. This week, Streetwise Opera, a company made up of homeless and ex-homeless players,is set to perform at the Royal Opera House as part of the London 2012 Festival build up to theOlympic Games. And, according to its founder, it's the first time the homeless have been part ofan Olympic Games and not been "overlooked, made unwelcome, or moved on." The salutarything about this story is that the people you and I, or even ministers, might be "stepping over"almost certainly aren't who we think they are. The Streetwise Opera itself includes three ex-servicemen, an architect, two music teachers, or who for different reasons, found themselveswithout a home and on the street. The idea that the homeless are different to the likes of us isreally a failure of imagination. It's also a very dangerous way of thinking. As the latest nationalstatistics released in June show, the number of homeless in England has risen by almost 1/5compared with the same period last year. Homelessness isn't something that happens to otherpeople.

A few years ago, I stepped over someone lying in a stairwell in Piccadilly. I was so full of my ownconcerns, I didn't see a person, just an obstacle to get around. After walking about 50 yards Ithought "what am I doing?" I went back and asked him what he needed. It wasn't a greatquestion. It was minus three degrees. "A decent sleeping bag would be a start," he said. So Iwent to Lilywhites and got him a tog factor 12 bag. When I returned we talked and he told mehe'd once been a soldier. What he really needed was to work again.

There's a story in Matthew's gospel that's always kept me guessing. It's both comfort to thosein need and a warning to those who think they've got it sorted. It's the one where

Jesusseparates the sheep from the goats. And it suggests that eternal life isn't dependent on howreligious we are, but whether we've actually fed the one who is hungry, invited the stranger intoour house, or clothed the person in need of clothes. Because, He points out, if we are doing itto them, we are doing it to Him. The next time we pass someone in a stairwell, it's worththinking about who we might be stepping over. They may well be homeless. They might also bean ex-soldier, a former teacher, or a future opera singer, but perhaps most crucially of all, theycould be you. They could be me, or even God Himself.

Whether you handle a pick or a pen, a wheel-barrow or a set of books, digging ditches or editing a paper, ringing an auction bell or writing funny things, you must work. If you look around you will see the men who are the most able to live the rest of their days without work are the men who work the hardest. Don't be afraid of killing yourself with overwork. It is beyond your power to do that on the sunny side of thirty. They die sometimes, but it is because they quit work at six in the evening, and do not go home until two in the morning. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street boy was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. "Is this your car, Mister?" he asked. Paul nodded. "My brother gave it to me for Christmas." The boy was astonished. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything? Boy, I wish...." He hesitated. Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad1 said made Paul quite surprised. "I wish," the boy went on, "that I could be a brother like that." Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively2 he added, "Would you like to take a ride in my automobile?" "Oh, yes, I'd love that." After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, "Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?" Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked. He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled3 brother. He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of4 squeezed up5 against him and pointed to the car. "There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn't cost him a cent. And some day I'm gonna6 give you one just like it... then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that I've been trying to tell you about." Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him

Some days I would walk four blocks south to see Grandma and Grandpa. At eighty-six, Grandpa was still quite a gardener, so I always watched for his earliest blooms and each new wave of spring flowers. I was especially interested in flowers that year because I was planning to landscape my own yard and I was eager to get Grandpa's advice. I thought I knew pretty much what I wanted -- a yard full of bushes and plants that would bloom from May till November. It was right after the first rush of purple violets in the lawns and the sudden blaze of forsythia that spring that Grandpa had a stroke. It left him without speech and with no movement on his left side. The whole family rallied to Grandpa. We all spent many hours by his side. Some days his eyes were eloquent -- laughing at our reported mishaps, listening alertly, revealing painful awareness of his inability to care for himself. There were days, too, when he slept most of the time, overcome with the weight of his approaching death. As the months passed, I watched the growing earth with Grandpa's eyes. Each time I was with him, I gave him a garden report. He listened, gripping my hand with the sure strength and calm he had always had. But he could not answer my questions.

He was probably the first, in the mid- tide ages to assert that we must learn scienceby observing and experimenting on the things around us, and he himself made manyremarkable discoveries. Galileo, however, who lived more than 800 years later (1564 to1642), was the greatest of several great men, who in Italy, France, Germany, or Eng- land, began by degrees to show how many important truths could be discovered by well-directedobservation. Before the time of Galileo, learned men believed that large bodies fall more rapidlytowards the earth than small ones, because Aristotle said so. But Galileo, going to the top ofthe Leaning Tower of Pisa, let fall two unequal stones, and proved to some friends, whom hehad brought there to see his experiment, that Aristotle was in error. It is Galileo's spirit ofgoing direct to Nature, and verifying our opinions and theories by experiment, that. has led toall the great discoveries of modern science.

As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious1 out-side,but I wanted to be liked inside. Once I left home to hitch-hike2 to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn't easy, and there were many times I didn't feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to still be alive. When I returned home,I was different, not so outwardly sure of myself. I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope, who was staying with us,was wearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren't there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me. I pointed out,"She is more patient and is neater than I have ever been." My mom said these were wonderful qualities, but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults-and there were many-I was a loved member of the family who couldn't be replaced. I became a searcher, wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view of myself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3 pressure to act in ways that I didn't like any more, and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place.
