One June 4th, my family and I decided to go whitewater rafting(急流泛舟) down the Nantahala River in Western North Carolina. It was a perfect day to be out on the water.My father thought that we could all deal with a new situation, so he decided to bring us togo without a guide at this new, hard course. My mom and I were upset by my dad’sdecision, but my brother was pleased with it. We got life jacket s, our raft and
paddles thatare used to row it, and then took a bus to the drop point where we carried the raft to theicy cold water. Having finished the training, we were on our own.
Within the first hour, we got stuck on two rocks. Another raft had to hit ours to getus off the rocks. After about two hours, we saw a huge rock on the right side of the river.It was coming out of the water about ten feet high and about fifteen feet wide. Somehow,we ended up on top of this rock. After about a minute, water started rushing in where mybrother was sitting. When he started falling into the water, I tried to pull him back.Unfortunately,we fell off together. My mother jumped in after us, but she could only getto my brother because he was closer than I was. My dad jumped out and ran up the bank ofthe river to get to the road, so he could see where I was. Little to his knowledge, I waspicked up after about two minutes by a stranger in another raft and was heading down theriver toward a little resting spot. I kept crying because I was so frightened and worriedabout my family. Thankfully, everyone was fine, just a little shaken up and very cold.
When we got back in our raft, we had only two paddles for four people. We all knewthat it was going to take a very long time to get to the end. One of the guides for anotherraft told us that there was an earlier place we could get out, but we would have to carry ourraft about a quarter of a mile. At that point, no one really cared if we had to do anythingafter we got out of the water. We finally got to the ending point. We got out of the water,wet and cold.
To this day, I have never been so cold in my life. I have not been rafting again becauseof this terrible experience. All of this happened because my dad did not hire a guide.

The popularity of tea in the United Kingdom has a long history. It was in 1657 thatThomas Garway, the owner of a coffee house, sold the first tea in London. The drink soonbecame popular as another choice besides coffee.
In those days, however, tea was not something for anyone. For a century and a half,it remained an expensive drink. Many bosses served a cup of it to their workers in themiddle of the morning, thus inventing a lasting British institution, the “tea break”. But as a social drink outside the workplace, tea was served for the nobility(贵族) and for the growing middle classes. Among those who had the money for tea, it became very popularas a drink to be enjoyed in cafés and “tea gardens”.
It was the 7th Duchess of Bedford who, in around 1800, started the popular“afternoon tea”, which took place at about four o’clock. At about the same time, the Earlof Sandwich popularised a new way of eating bread with something (e. g. jam) betweenthem, and before long, a small meal at the end of the afternoon with tea and sandwicheshad become part of a way of life.
As tea became much cheaper during the nineteenth century, its popularity spread rightthrough British society. In working-class households, it was served with the main meal ofthe day, eaten when workers returned home after a day’s labour. This meal has becomeknown as “high tea”.
