Don’t overlook the stuff you really rely on After reading the commencement speech, This is Water, from David Foster Wallace, I get a long time thought. I believe the majority have similar experience. There is a question I have been also asked like the young fish in the story. “Have you felt love? ”Someone asked me when I was just a middle student. “Love? Where is love? I just even couldn’t feel it a little. ”What I met everyday were heavy homework, strict disciplines in school and less rest at that time. The only one thing I could be sure was so tired because I lost myself in abstract math theories. But now, I know I was just blinded by obstacles in life, surrounded by the love from my parents, friends and teachers in fact.
There will be myriad petty little things around us, and old cliches which we have heard them thousands times from our elder. Most of the time we think they are out of fashion, just abstract nonsense, like the young fish don’t know what is water. Instead we often believe some totally wrong views just by our immediate experience without serious thought. As a matter of fact, everybody defaults himself as the center of the world. Living in a so fast, crowded and noisy society which is full of desire that we have forgotten and overlooked the voice from the bottom of our hearts. Following the masses, we drop into the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing. Life becomes blue, we lose happiness.
So the point is how to avoid being that. The author wants to tell us some other styles of freedom which don’t originate from power, wealth, intellect, beauty, etc. The first and most important thing is to learn how to think, it’s not the capacity to think, but rather about the choice of what to think about. For altering or getting free of your natural, hard-wired default setting which is to be deeply and literally self-centered and to see and interpret everything through this lens of self, we have to being conscious and aware enough to choose what we focus on and to choose how you get experience from life. In my opinion, the most adjusted attitude to routine life is less complaint, work hard and put your attention to your heart. Learn to care about other people around you, to sacrifice for them and be thankful. This is real freedom, the truth of life. You need to know what is real and essential for yourself but always hides in plain place we never notice, don’t overlook the stuff you really rely on. You may not accept the advice now, but don’t worry, we everybody will understand these pervasive, bored, lengthy, abstract “nonsense” eventually.。
