Part One Translation 50% (75points)

I. Translate the following into Chinese. (40 points, 8 points for each item)

1) The miseries I saw, as a boy, in the lives of nearly all men I continue to see in the lives of many---the body breaking toil, the tedium, the call to be tough, the humiliating powerlessness, the battle for a living and for territory.

3) Like Socrates, I suppose I could say that I loved wisdom, since I after all knew who was wise and who was not, and that I wanted to behave like the former and not the latter. But actual wisdom is something that escapes me.

The recent book 'Ant Tribes' , about the life of some young people who flock to Beijing after leaving university, depicts the graduates, like ants, as smart but insignificant as individuals, drawing strength from living together in communities.

2）我国正处于对外投资加快发展的重要阶段，要加强宏观指导，强化政策支持，简化审批手续，健全服务保障。

With China's outward investment in an important stage of accelerated development, we will enhance macro-guidance, increase policy support, streamline approval procedures, and improve services for Chinese investors.

3）科学可能是一把双刃剑。要随时提防有人把新技术用于不正当的手段。比如，医疗上使用的克隆技术，就应该防止用于复制人类这样有违道德的用途。

Since science can be a double-edged sword, there is always the need to guard against any improper use of new technologies. For example, we should prevent therapeutic cloning from being employed for immoral purposes such as human reproduction.

4）对迟到者而言，无论他们怎样安排好充裕的时间，好让赴约变得从容，但他们依旧是约会上最后的出现者。迟到者以迟到来自视高于别人，因为毋容置疑，别人在等待中会不断想到自己。

No matter how hard they have tried to allow sufficient time for an appointment, latecomers somehow "manage" to be the last arrivals for the meet-up. Simply because they have in mind that they are undoubtedly above others who have been kept waiting for and thinking of them every now and then.
