But Belle can't stand Gaston because he's an arrogant meathead.One day, Belle's kooky inventor father Maurice gets lost in the woods and ends up as the prisoner of the Beast in his creepy castle. The Beast is actually a prince who was turned into a monster as punishment for his selfish ways. Belle goes to the castle looking for her dad and she offers to take his place as the Beast's prisoner so Maurice can go free.At first, Belle is totally creeped out by the Beast and wants nothing to do with him. But over time, she learns that despite his scary appearance, the Beast is actually a nice guy deep down. The Beast's servants, who were turned into household objects like a clock, candlestick and teapot, help Belle see the Beast's true self.Meanwhile, back in the village, Gaston is losing his mind over Belle rejecting him. When Maurice tries to get help rescuing Belle, the narrow-minded villagers throw him in a crazy asylum thinking he's making up stories about a beast. Gaston uses this as an excuse to throw together an angry mob to kill the Beast and "rescue" Belle, even though she doesn't actually want to be rescued from the Beast at that point.This leads to an epic battle at the Beast's castle, with the objects bravely fighting off the villagers' attack. Gaston finally meets the Beast and they have this insane fight on the rooftops of the castle. Just when it seems Gaston is going to kill the Beast, he arrogantly reveals he'll leave the Beast to be massacred by the townsfolk. This allows the Beast to overpower and defeat Gaston once and for all. But the Beast is mortally wounded and looks like he's gonna die.Belle finally realizes she has fallen in love with the Beast. She professes her love just as the last petal falls from the enchanted rose that's tied to the Beast's curse. This magical act of true love breaks the spell, transforming the Beast back into a handsome prince. The objects turn back into humans, the castle is repaired to its full glory, and Belle and the Prince get married and live happily ever after!There's so much I love about this movie. The animation is breathtaking, especially during scenes in the Beast's castle. The songs by the amazing Alan Menken and Howard Ashman are instant classics, from Belle's opening number to "Be Our Guest" to the title song. I still get chills during the iconic ballroom dance between Belle and the Beast.But beyond the incredible music and visuals, Beauty and the Beast has a powerful message about looking past external appearances to see the true beauty within someone.
