山西省太原市第五中学2019届高三下学期阶段性检测(4月)英语试题

【全国百强校】山西省太原市第五中学2019届高三下学期阶段性检测(4月)英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读选择It is commonly believed that in medieval France, New Year was celebrated on 1 April. Then in 1562, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar for the Christian world, changing New Year to 1 January. With no modern communications, news travelled slowly and new ideas were often questioned. Many people did not hear of the change, some merely forgot, and others chose to ignore it. These people were called fools. Invitations to non-existent “New Year” parties were sent and other practical jokes were played. Over time playing tricks on 1 April became a tradition. The custom eventually spread to England and Scotland, and it was later transported across the Atlantic to the American colonies (殖民地) of the English and the French. April Fools’ Day has now developed into an international festival of fun, with different nationalities celebrating the day in special ways.France and ItalyIn France and Italy, if some one plays a trick on you, you are the “fish of April”. By the month of April fish have only just hatched and are therefore easy to catch. Children stick paper fish to their Friends’ backs and chocolate fish are found in the shops.America and BritainToday, Americans and the British play small tricks on friends and strangers alike on 1 April. A common trick is to point to a friend’s shoe and say “Your shoelace(鞋带) is untied.” When they look down, they are laughed at. Schoolchildren might tell a friend that school has been cancelled. Sometimes the media get involved. Once, a British short film was shown on April Fools’ Day about spaghetti farmers and how they harvest their crop from spaghetti trees!ScotlandIn Scotland, April Fools’ Day lasts for two days! The second day is called “Taily Day” and tricks on this day involve the bottom (or the “tail”, in informal speech). Often a sign saying‘kick me’ is stuck onto someone’s back without them knowing.1.In what condition would someone be called “fish of April” in France?A.When one is fooled.B.If one is fond of fish.C.When one fools others.D.If one prefers chocolate.2.What was the purpose of the British short film?A.To help the audience.B.To trick the audience.C.To warn the audience.D.To inform the audience.3.Where does April Fools’ Day last for more than one day?A.Italy. B.France.C.America. D.Scotland.Fashions have a lot of rules. Most of them, however, are just wrong. But there’s one rule that goes beyond tradition and into the field of scientific study of the brain: Black garments are slimming. It all comes down to how your visual system processes the light. The below holes in each square are the same in size, yet the white hole looks bigger than the black hole.In the 1500s, Galileo Galilei noticed that some of the planets looked larger when viewed with the naked eye (肉眼) than they did when viewed through a telescope, making the white light of Venus (金星) appear eight to ten times larger than Jupiter (木星) in the night sky. He knew somet hing strange must be going on with his vision to cause this illusion, but he wasn’t sure what it was. Luckily, scientists never stopped wondering, and in 2014, they figured it out.Our visual system operates via two main channels: “on” neurons (神经元) that are sensitive to light things and “off” neurons that are sensitive to dark things. When it came to the dark “off” neurons, the researchers found that they responded predictably to dark shapes on a light background — the greater the contrast between the two, the more active these neurons were. But the light “on” neurons behaved unpredictably. Even with the same amount of contrast, light objects on a dark background caused a greater response in these neurons. This makes some sense, evolutionarily speaking. In the dark of night, you’d want to be able to take in every bit of light you can get, so a visual system that enlarges light objects on adark background could be very useful. However, it’s not that hard to see dark objects in the light of day. It has some effects in the colors of your clothes and in the appearance of the planets — the brighter appearance of Venus in the night sky makes it look bigger than the darker Jupiter.4.What did Galileo Galilei believe according to Paragraph 2?A.The neurons led to the difference.B.There was something wrong with his telescope.C.The difference was caused by his visual illusion.D.Things were bigger when seen through telescopes.5.What do we know about the “off” neurons?A.They are sensitive to light objects.B.Their b ehavior can’t be predicted.C.They behave differently from person to person.D.Their activeness improves with the contrast of colors.6.What does the author think of the phenomenon?A.It makes people feel puzzled.B.It brings great harm to people.C.It is more common among youths.D.It is beneficial to people’s evolution.7.What is the text mainly about?A.Why we look thinner when in black.B.What visual illusions bring to people.C.How we are affected by the fashion rules.D.Whether people’s visual system is different.“No matter where you are or what time it is there’s something going on at a Hard Rock Cafe. All over the world our cafes not only serve great food, but they serve up great music.” Hard Rock Cafes around the world symbolize the timeless e nergy, originality and unifying(团结的) spirit that have helped to shape rock music over the last century.Founded by two Americans, the first Hard Rock Cafe (HRC) opened its doors to the public on June 14, 1971, in London. Today, HRC has become a global phenomenon with more than 180 cafes in different countries.HRC has also become the world’s leading collector and exhibitor of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia. It all started when Eric Clapton, a regular at the first HRC, asked the staff if they could hang his guitar on the wall to mark his favourite stool (凳子) as “his spot”. They did and one week later, a package from Pete Townshend arrived with a guitar and a note with the message, “Mine’s as good as his! Love, Pete.”Ever since then, Hard Rock Cafes have been collecting pieces of rock memorabilia and covering their walls with them. Their collection is rotated from restaurant to restaurant and provides the world’s most comprehensive “visual history” of rock ‘n’ roll. These treasures include an awe-inspiring collection of classic guitars and other instruments, posters, music, etc.Throughout its history, HRC has been governed by a special service philosophy: “Love All —Serve All.” Since it was established, HRC has taken part in a wide variety of humane activities around the world. Following its idea of being more than just a restaurant, HRC tries to connect its business and its passion to make the earth a safer, healthier and better place to live. All in all, Hard Rock Cafe International is an entertainment company that continues to successfully expand the Hard Rock brand through countless music-related activities. 8.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To explain why HRC is a success.B.To show the characteristics of HRC.C.To describe the excellent service of HRC.D.To introduce what you can share in a HRC.9.Why did Pete send his guitar to the first HRC in London?A.He wanted to occupy a seat.B.He wanted to pay his bill with it.C.He wanted his guitar to be assessed.D.He wanted his guitar to be put on its wall.10.What do we know about the HRC’s collection?A.It is related to rock ‘n’ roll.B.It is housed in the first HRC.C.It was advocated by Eric Clapton.D.It was financed by regular customers.11.What does the HRC’s service philosophy imply?A.HRC welcomes everyone to the cafe.B.HRC is operated for a charitable purpose.C.HRC offers various activities to its customers.D.HRC provides the best service at the lowest price.二、七选五When you write a message or an email, you might put a smiling face or other pictures at the end to make the message more fun. The ocean seems to have more water than all the water on Earth's surface, according to new Hubble observation.New Hubble observations of Ganymede's magnetic field strongly suggest thatthe moon, which is the largest in our whole solar system, is home to a subsurface ocean.Scientists estimate the ocean is 95 kilometres thick, which is about 10 times deeper than Earth's oceans. But unlike our salty waters, Ganymede's ocean is buried under 150 kilometres of ice. While scientists have speculated(推测) since 1970s about the presence of anocean on Ganymede------the largest moon in our solar system------ until now the only observational evidence came from a brief flyby by the Galileo spacecraft, which didn’t obser ve the moon long enough to confirm a liquid ocean. This discovery marks an important milestone, highlighting what only Hubble can accomplish. In its 25 years in orbit, Hubble has made many scientific discoveries in our own solar system. A deep ocean under the icy surface of Ganymede opens up further exciting possibilities for life beyond Earth.Scientists have already confirmed the existence of an ocean on Europ e , another moon orbiting Jupiter, and NASA has announced plans to send an unmanned mission there searching for the life that might come with liquid water.Hubble is a telescope that orbits Earth, but because of its impressive gravitational analyses it can be used to study the inside of far distant planets. Using these same principles, scientists could theoretically detect oceans on distant planets as well.1. What can we learn about the Ganymede from the passage? It is a planet with the largest moon in our whole solar system.B. Its ocean adds to people’s excitement about life beyond Earth.C. It will be used by NASA as a base for the Hubble telescope.D. Its liquid ocean was first proved by the Galileo spacecraft.2. It is now certain that there is an ocean on Europe .D. No evidence has shown the existence of an ocean on Europe .4. What type of writing does this passage belong to?A. A term essayB. A news reportC. An experiment reportD. An exploration review.4. The earth is dying before us yet we sit and watch. If the TV or the game system breaks, we run off to the stores to get it fixed immediately no matter what the cost. Why aren’t we willing to fix our earth? Are our televisionsand game systems more important to us than where we live? Where shall we continue to live, until the end of time? The earth is our home and cannot be replaced. We must take care of it. We have come up with so much technology that limits us instead of helping us. Take that game system we run to repair. What does it do? It occupies kids’ time! The earth has already given kids plenty of entertainment in the forms of fields and hills, forests and plains, water and land. However, instead of using what the earth has given us, and helping kids by giving them exercise as they run around, we decide to ruin kids’ minds with game systems that glue them to the screen for hours, and make them ignore their homework and chores. We have polluted this earth by making these things which do not even help in any way!We have already messed up this world, we have ruined the air, water, and animals that it has so willingly provided for us. We need to stop this destruction of life and bring back the world we had before. It will not be easy, but everybody can help! What about something as simple as turning the lights off when you leave a room? Recycling what can be recycled? Picking up litter? Donating money to an environmental organization? None of these things are very hard. We can’t just always say, “Oh, the earth is a mess. Ah, well, those big companies that are polluting so much can stop and fix it.” Instead, we need to help out. It’s not only those big companies; it’s everyday things that we do too that are ruining the earth. So stop and think about what you can do to make a difference to our world!1. Why does the author mention televisions and game systems in Paragraph 1? To make people better aware of the urgency to the protection of the earth.B. To explore the great harm done to the earth by too much technology waste.C. To show the relationship between overuse of those things with early death.D. To remind people to spend less on them and use the saved money in a wiser way.2. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that the author___________ . thinks we must take care of our irreplaceable home-----the earthB. thinks running around in fields occupies too much of kids’ timeC. takes an extremely negative attitude to things like game systemsD. takes it for granted that technology gives kids plenty of entertainment3. 2019-2020学年太原市第五实验中学高三英语二模试卷及答案解析

AThe last thing Caitlin Hipp would have expected as she prepared to turn 28 years old was to be living at homewith her parents. But through working as a part-time skating instructor and restaurant server, she isn't able to earn enough to live anywhere other than home.To some degree, multigenerational households have always been a part of American life. However, the number of young adults who have been moving back in with their parents — or never leaving home in the first place — has been growing steadily.UBS Financial Services released a report that even suggests one reason for the growing number of young adultsstill living at home could be that their family doesn't want them to leave. The report shows that 74 percent of millennials (千禧一代)get some kind of financial support from their parents after college. It finds that millennials have redefined the ties that connect parents and children. Millennials see their parents as peers, friends and instructors. Nearly three quarters talked with their parents more than once a week during college. In return, their parents happily provide financial support well into adulthood, helping fund everything for them.Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Services Group in theUS, said the number of young adults striking out on their own fell during the Great Recession. Although job growth for millennials since 2014 has improved, that doesn't necessarily mean that millennials are starting to fly the nest. He said, “They may like living at home and being able to save money.“ There's no doubt it has held back household formation and purchases of things people spend money on related to household formation and perhaps related to child-raising," Hoffman explained. "But they are probably traveling more and eating out more if they don't have a house expense or marriage. I don't know if it represents a change in moral values. But it's much more common for adult children to live in their parents’ homes because it's becoming part of the culture.1. What can we learn from the UBS Financial Services' report?A. Millennials are on good terms with their parents.B. Millennials are financially independent after college.C. Parents are unwilling to give their young adults allowance.D. Parents want their kids to stay with them forever.2. What does Hoffman think of young adults' living at home?A. It increases the consumption of household products.B. It may continue despite job growth.C. It is a sign of shift in moral values.D. It is new in American culture.3. What is the author's purpose of writing this passage?A. To introduce millennials' living habits.B. To stress the importance of financial independence.C. To explain why American young adults still live at home.D. To inform people of a social trend in theUS.BANew Zealandcouncil has announced a month-long road closure in order to allow a sea lion and her pup to reach the ocean safely.John Wilson Ocean Drive in Dunedin will be closed after the New Zealand sea lions made their home at a nearby golf course and started "regularly crossing the road to get to the beach," according to a Facebook post from Dunedin City Council."You can still visit the area on foot or by bicycle, but please give the sea lions lots of space," continued the post.Locals applauded the decision, and one even called for the closure to be made permanent."No dogs should be on the beach, either," wrote Gaylene Smith. "We need to protect our beautiful sea life."Dogs are known to attack sea lions, and Chisholm Links Golf Course, where the sea lions have made their home, also posted advice to dog walkers in a Facebook update."We're lucky to have sea lions on our coastline and we need to share the space with them,as this is what makes our coastline so unique!" wrote the course on Facebook. The council went on to explain thatNew Zealandsea lions are endangered, and are one of the world's rarest species of sea lion. There are an estimated 12,000New Zealandsea lions left, according to the Department of Conservation. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it. I got blisters(水泡) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.I learned a lot about gardening and collaboration(合作), and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them. The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie(大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students. As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project. That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knewthatwhenwe saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.8. What seemed to be the TV directors’ initial reaction to the garden?A. They were excited.B. They were surprised.C. They were worried.D. They were uninterested.9. What is special about the garden?A. Weeds were allowed to spread naturally.B. The grass grew faster than common grass.C. The seeds came from the plants of a prairie.D. Underground water was used for the plants.10. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the last paragraph?A. We got blisters on our hands.B. Our hard work was worthwhile.C. The garden would be famous.D. The project would be finished.11. How did the author feel about the project?A. Annoyed.B. Curious.C. Proud.D. Regretful.DIn the old days, when you had to drive to a movie theater to get some entertainment, it was easy to see how your actions could have an impact(影响)on the environment. After all, you were jumping into your car, driving across town, coughing out emissions(产生排放)and using gas all the way. But now that we're used to staying at home and streaming movies, we might get a littleproud. After all, we're just picking up our phones and maybe turning on the TV. You're welcome. Mother Nature. Not so fast, says a recent report from the French-based Shift Project. According to "Climate Crisis: The Unsustainable Use of Online Video", digital technologies are responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that energy use is increasing by 9% a year. Watching a half-hour show would cause 1. 6 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions. That's like driving 6. 28 kilometers. And in the European Union, the Eureca project found that data centers(where videos are stored)there used 25% more energy in 2017 compared to just three years earlier, reports the BBC.Streaming is only expected to increase as webecome more enamored ofour digital devices(设备)and the possibility of enjoying entertainment where and when we want it increases. Online video use is expected to increase by four times from 2017 to 2022 and account for 80% of all Internet traffic by 2022. By then, about 60%of the world's population will be online. You're probably not going to give up your streaming services, but there're things you can do to help lessen the impact of your online use, experts say. For example, according to Lutz Stobbe, a researcher from the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin, we have no need to upload 25 pictures of the same thing to the cloud because it consumes energy every time. If instead you delete a few things here and there, you can save energy. Moreover, it's also a good idea to stream over Wi-Fi, watch on the smallest screen you can, and turn off your Wi-Fi in your home if you're not using your devices.12. What topic is the first paragraph intended to lead in?A. The environmental effects of driving private cars.B. The improvements on environmental awareness.C. The change in the way people seek entertainment.D The environmental impacts of screaming services.13. What does the underlined phrase become more enamored of" in paragraph 3 probably mean?A. 2019届山西省高三英语二模试题和答案详细解析及家长必读
