A lot of us lose life's tough battles by starting a frontal attack--when a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who was on his trapped w ay to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum(最后通牒) about the job. Although there was a good reason for Sam' s being late--serious illness at home--he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn't work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal s peech.Yes, the boss was, Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room; everyone was hard at work. S am's supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand. "How do you do!" he said. "I'm S am Maynard. I'm applying for a job, which, I understand, beca me available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?"The room exploded in laughter, except that the supervisor ha d to clamp off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam May nard had saved his job--with the only tool that could win, a laugh.Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying "no", criticizing, g etting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing f ace. For some jobs, it's the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may s tart a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on t elevision are doing more today for racial and religious toleran ce than people in any other forum.1. Why was Sam late for his job?A. Because he was seriously ill at home.B. Because he received an ultimatum.C. Because he was busy applying for a new job.D. Because he was caught in a traffic jam.2. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Sam Maynard saved his job with humor.B. Humor is important in our lives.C. Early bird can get the worm.D. Humor can solve racial discriminations.3. The phrase "clamp off" in Paragraph 3 means ________.A. try to hold backB. pretend to setC. send offD. give out4. Which of the following statements can we infer from the pa ssage?A. Many lose life's battles for they are always late.B. Sam was supposed to come to his office at 8:30.C. It wasn't the first time that Sam came late for his work.D. Humor is the most effective way of solving problems.1、答案解析:答案为D。

阅读理解训练(5)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A MythIt is true that world population is growing, but this is not the ca use of our current and future global problems. Believing this w ill cause us to ignore the real problem and risk long-term damage to our planet.Let me start by explaining why overpopulation is a myth. For o ne thing, the UN Population Division regularly predicts populat ion growth but provides a low variant (变量), medium variant, and high variant to factor in various possi bilities. In the 2010 revision, their high variant suggests that th e world population will be almost 16 billion in 2100, but the lo w variant predicts it will peak at 8 billion and decrease to just over 6 billion by 2100. In most cases, it is the low variant that has come true in the past, suggesting the same will be true of their future population predictions. In addition to this, the size of families is actually decreasing. For another, if the Earth is overpopulated, there needs to be i nsufficient (短缺) food, water, and space for humans to live. However, India n economist Raj Krishna estimates that alone is able to incre ase crop produce to the point of providing the entire world’s fo od supply. The World Food Programme confirms that there is sufficient food grown to feed the world and there is the same amount of fresh water on the planet now as there was 10,000 years ago. So how is it possible that the number of people in t he world is affecting our planet? Therefore, it is not an increase in population but an increase i n consumption that is a severe threat. Materialism and overco nsumption are facts of life for everybody in the western world, as possessions reflect a person’s status in society and people strive to obtain happiness through owning the latest fashiona ble goods. Not only that, but waste is a common occurrence which has a huge effect on our resources. It is a sad truth that 80% of the world’s resources are currently used by just 20% of the world’s population. Our overconsumption must be addressed now to make our liv es more sustainable (可持续的) and avoid continuing the terrible damage to the environme nt we are causing. The key is education. If we do not work to wards this but instead focus on the wrong issue, we may find ourselves living on a planet that can no longer sustain humanlife.1. According to the author, what causes our current and future global problems?A. The increase in population.B. Shortage of food and water.C. The fast growth of material needs.D. Failure to protect the environment.2. The underlined word “myth” in Paragraph 2 is closest in me aning to _________.A. factB. misconceptionC. possibilityD. uncertainty3. The author stresses that _____.A. people should save food and waterB. economists are making wrong predictionsC. wrong judgment leads to serious consequencesD. measures should be taken to reduce population4. What is mainly discussed in the passage?A. The real cause of global problems.B. The severe effect of overpopulation.C. Reasonable use of natural resources.D. Methods to reduce overconsumption.【参考答案】C B C .A2016高考英语二轮:(精选)阅读理解训练(5)及答案A“It takes an entire village to raise a child.”That’s an old prov erb(谚语) that is being quoted more and more often these days. In fact, all rela tionships need limits no matter whether they are friendships, s ibling relations, mates/ lovers or business relations. On some l evel, all limit setting means saying no. However, it is usually a qualified “no” that says what, where, when, and under what c onditions you will give or not give to another person. There are three points we should keep in mind about limit setting:1.Decide where to set the limits. Think about the entire situati on. Consider your time, emotions, and means. Then consider whether you are helping the other person. Aim to do somethin g to help the other person without taking on the whole proble m.2.Express the limits clearly. For example, you say to your frie nd, “ I will lend you $20,000 no more than once every three m onths. And I expect you will pay me back within three monthsand certainly before you can borrow more.” You say to anothe r friend, “you can stay here for three weeks but you must help me with expenses and cooking and make sure that you will find your own place before the three weeks is up”.3.Stick to your limits. You are not responsible for making the o ther person obey the limits. You are only responsible for follo wing the limits yourself. Your friend has repaid $12,500 of his/ her $20,000 and asks for $20,000 more. You say no. He/She gets emotional and then says, “I need this money to cover a b ad check. If you cared for our friendship, you would do it”.Limit setting is often stressful and painful because people m istakes it for rejection. And limit setting certainly brings guilt. B ear in mind, it doesn’t mean you have given up or quit loving y our friend, lovers, or sibling. It does mean you are expressing that love in a different and more helpful (to both of you) mann er.25. According to the passage, setting limits means__________ _________.A. refusing always to say yes to your friendB. saying no to your friend who turns to youC. making different kinds of friendsD. breaking away fro m your friend26.Once you decide to set limits, you should_______________ _________.A. announce it publicly to othersB. tell your friend about it clearlyC. be responsible for your friendD. begin to help your frie nd27.We can learn from the last paragraph that limit setting____ __________.A. is often misunderstoodB. is actually a kind of reje ctionC. does harm to your friendship D .contains both love and hate28. Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was one of the greatest and most original scientific thinkers of all time.Born of Jewish parents at Ulm in Germany, he completed his education in Switzerland and got his Ph. D. at the University of Zurich. He went to live in the United States in 1933 because of the rise of Nazism in Germany and Hitler’s persecution of the Jews.In 1905, while still at Zurich, he published his Special Theory of Relativity, which was based on things everyone may have noticed. If two trains are standing alongside each other and one train starts to move, a person sitting in the train may wonder whether his own train is moving or the other is moving, and before he finds out what is happening, he can see that one train is moving relative to the other. From this and also from other more complicated facts, Einstein came to the conclusion that all motion is relative and that there is really no such thing as absolute motion. Some of the other conclusions he drew are that nothing can go faster than light, and that if something such as a ruler was moving faster and faster it would seem to get shorter and shorter as its speed was near the speed of light. By 1915, Einstein had made known his General Theory of Relativity. He also improved on Newton’s theory of gravity. Most o f his theories have been tested and found to be true though some may sound strange. For his important work he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics.Towards the end of his life, Einstein was asked by a group of students to explain his complicated Theory of Relativity. He said, “When you sit with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute; but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute, it seems like an hour. That is relativity.”Comprehension Questions:C. still in Switzerland at the age of twenty-six.D. still at the University of Zurich at the age of thirty-six.3. One of the conclusions drawn by Einstein is that ______A. planes can go faster than trains and buses.B. people couldn't run as fast as vehicles.C. light goes the fastest of all things.D. two trains can never go at the same time.4. Einstein added that if something such as a ruler was moving, it would seem to get shorter and shorter ______A. because the ruler itself was short.B. when it was moving faster and faster.C. because we can't see it clearly.D. because the ruler was broken into pieces.5. Albert Einstein was world-famous for his ______A. Special Theory of Relativity.B. General Theory of Relativity.C. improving on Newton’s theory of gravity.D. all his work mentioned above.(DCCBD)22.
