Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.( A )About 18 months ago, my father was in the hospital recovering from a major lung operation. My mother had recently passed away, and my father had taken the loss of his partner of 55 years very hard and had lost interest in life.Trying to get him to eat each day was quite a chore as he didn’t want anything. The one thing, however, that he would ask us to bring him was ice-cream.One evening to our surprise, he refused to eat the ice-cream, so I placed it in a staff room freezer. A little while later, my son decided he wanted it, so I fetched it for him.As I passed another ward, a woman asked, “Are there more? Where that came from?” When I explained the situation, she apologized. She then said that she had cancer and could eat very little other than the occasional ice-cream.The next evening, I decided to buy two ice-cream. On the way to Dad’s room, I stopped in at the sick woman’s room, and offered her the ice-cream I’d bought for her. She was totally stunned that I had thought of her, and accepted the gift with tears in her eyes. I spoke with her for a few minutes, explaining what was happening in my family and listened to her similar story of pain and suffering. It was apparent that she did not have many visitors, and the ice-cream and our short chat meant a great deal to her.I repeated the gesture a few days later, and this time was rewarded with a huge hug.I never even thought to ask her name, and never saw her again, but it made me realize that an act of kindness can be more rewarding when you give it, rather than receive it.58. The writer’s father stayed in the hospital because________.A. he had trouble eatingB. he had had a lung operationC. he had lost interest in lifeD. he was ill for losing his wife59. The writer bought ice-creams for the sick lady when he realized________.A. ice-cream was among the little food she could eatB. they had similar family experiencesC. she was lonely without family aroundD. to give is as important as to receive60. The underlined word in paragraph 6 probably means________.A. body languageB. wordC. actionD. decision61. What did the writer try to convey to us through the story?A. Giving is rewarding.B. Don’t hesitate to help elderly people.C. It’s our responsibility to look after our parents.D. Never put of anything you can do till tomorrow.( B )When Americans think of the lunch menu at their childhood school cafeterias, they probably imagine a shapeless, tasteless pile of mystery meat – plus some brown much(糊状物),to match. But for children in Japan, school lunches are a rich experience where culture, nutrition and sustainability collide.“Japan’s standpoint is that school lunches are a part of education, not a break from it,” Masahiro Oji, a government director of school health education in Japan, told The Washington Post.Fare offered at schools in Japan is affordable, fresh, and made by the students themselves. And Japanese children don’t just eat the food they prepare; they learn about the nutritional and cultural elements of their meals, too. The food is grown locally and includes a balanced menu of rice, vegetable, fish and soups. As a bonus, each meal costs just $2.50.“Parents hear their kids talking about what they had for lunch,” Tatsuji Shino, the principal at Umejima Elementary School in Tokyo, told The Washington Post, “and kids ask them to re-create the meals at home.”Japanese students also learn cooperation and etiquette(礼仪)as they serve and clean up after each other. Mealtime is a scene of communal duty: In both elementary and middle schools, students in white coats and caps serve their classmates. Children eat in their classrooms. They get identical meals, and if they leave food untouched, they are out of luck: Their schools have no vending machines. Children in most districts are barred from bringing food to school, either, until they reach high school.Considering the fact that Japan has one of the world’s lowest childhood obesity rates, the U.S. probably has a lot to learn from this country’s school lunches. A 2011 study found that American students who regularly ate the school lunch – where options include pizza, chicken tenders(炸鸡柳)and French fries – were 29 percent more likely to be obese than those who brought lunch from home.62. According to the article, which word best describes what Americans think of their lunch at school?A. Tasty.B. Ordinary.C. Disgusting.D. Unique.63. The underlined word “fare” in the third paragraph probably means________.A. foodB. breakfastC. drinksD. price64. What is the main purpose of students’ preparing lunch by themselves in Japanese schools?A. To allow students to learn cooperation.B. To teach students some basic life skills.C. To let students learn about nutritional values of foods.D. To inspire students to share their food with others.65. What can we infer from the passage?A. Japan has the lowest rate of obesity in the world.B. Japanese schools lay great emphasis on cooperation and etiquette.C. American school children don’t bring homemade lunches.D. Students in Japan are healthier in every way than those in America.Section CDirections: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box.66. ________ In China, enough food is wasted in restaurants every year to feed 200 million people. In the United States, 40 percent of food is wasted from farm to fork. Each year, the amount of food thrown away in rich countries is almost the same as that produced in sub-Saharan Africa. This raises some important questions. In developing countries, food is lost because farmers do not have appropriate cooling, storage or market access for their crops. Their grains, fruits and vegetables dry up and rot away. 67. ________ China faces both problems, significant losses in farms, as well as at the sale and consumption stages. And the amount of food wasted by Chinese consumers it rapidly increasing. Consumer culture has filled China and urban residents can get quality food from anywhere in thecountry and from across the planet. 68. ________ In supermarkets, they refuse to buy vegetables that don’t look fresh or have an irregular shape, or milk and other products close to their expiry(失效)date.69. ________ In restaurants or at home, often too much food is ordered or cooked and served. So while trooping out of a restaurant, full and happy, with colleagues or friends, they never look back at what’s left untouched on the table. Should Chinese consumers take more responsibility for the waste they create?Everyone deserves to have enough food to eat. Despite China’s impressive success in reducing hunger over the past three decades, the job is not completed yet.Ⅱ. Hurricane Fiona, killing 16 people and bringing the power system to a 3-day stop, struck Puerto Rico, an island country located between Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, on September 18, almost five years after Hurricane Maria hit the island, showing that, as researchers have long warned, storms are now more frequent and cause more damage due to climate change.Back in 2017, Hurricane Maria killed thousands of people and left millions without power for a week. A study in 2019 found that the possibility of terrible events like Hurricane Maria hitting Puerto Rico is now almost five times higher due to climate change. The storms were similar in many ways but had their own features. Maria was a Category (类别) 4 hurricane whose speed was up to 155 mph, while Fiona, a Category 1 storm when it landed Puerto Rico, was gentler, with winds of up to 85 mph, which later increased to 115 mph as the storm progressed through the island. And yet, the heavy rain caused by Fiona brought Puerto Rico to its knees. According to the data by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the slow moving storm brought 15.80 inches of rain over 5-day period, slightly more than Maria at 14.72 inches. This confirms another long-held thought that, with climate change, horrible storms will not only become more common but also wetter. That’s because the increase in temperatures is lea ding to more loss of water from the sea and warmer air can hold more water vapor (水蒸气). The average temperature all over the world has already increased by nearly 1.2℃ due to climate change and for each 1℃ of warming, the air’s ability to hold water is tho ught to increase by about 7%. The latest research suggests that the increase may be three times higher, at 21%.1. What was a direct cause of more storms in Puerto Rico?A.Loss of forests. B.Climate change.C.Human activity. D.Puerto Rico’s location.2. Compared with Maria, what’s the feature of Fiona progressing through Puerto Rico?A.It brought less rain. B.It brought more deaths.C.It moved a bit slower. D.It caused a longer power cut.3. What do the figures in the last paragraph show?A.Slower storms cause more damage.B.Storms are common in Puerto Rico.C.Puerto Rico is a place raining all the time.D.Rainfall increases with temperature rising.4. What’s the best title for the text?A.Puerto Rico: Frequent FloodsB.Puerto Rico: Survival of PeopleC.Climate Change: Wetter Puerto RicoD.Climate Change: Disasters to Puerto Rico3. Reading with a child is a hugely important developmental activity as it helps youngsters learn new words, broadens their knowledge and provides time to bond with loved ones. So scientists wanted to see if parents and children acted differently when they read books together using traditional media compared with electronic device (电子设备).To find out, the researchers carried out a study on 37 pairs of parents and healthy children between two and three years old. They asked them to read from three different types of media: electronic books with sound effects or animation; a basic electronic book; and a print book.Researchers found parents and children spoke more when interacting with a paper book rather than a story on an electronic tablet (平板电脑). What’s more, parents used richer language when using print books compared with tablets. But parents were less responsive and children were less engaged with their parents when reading e-books, Munzer said. Dr Tiffany Munzer, coauthor of the study, told Newsweek: “One of the must surprising aspects is that these findings held true even when parents and children read tablet books with few distracting factors, suggesting it might be the actual tablet device that’s contributing to less conversation between parents and children.”So should parents give up tablets when reading with their children, or is some reading better than none, regardless of the device?“That isn’t to say there is no benefit to electronic book reading compared with doing nothing, just less compared with print books. Print books are just better for improving rich language from parents and more conversation between parents and children.” Munzer said that parents a lways know their children best. “So they should feel free to adjust the reading experience to what they know their children are interested in, even comics and magazines count as reading.”1. Why did the scientists carry out the research among parents and children?A.To find out what effects parents have on children.B.To compare traditional media with electronic device.C.To find out if they behave differently with various media.D.To learn if reading with children can be helpful to their growth.2. Which can best explain the underlined words “distracting factors” in paragraph 3?A.Tools that attract kids. B.Contents that fit kids.C.People who help reading. D.Things that affect reading3. What does Munzer think of kids’ electronic book reading?A.Kids can do it at times. B.There is no benefit at all.C.It will replace the print book reading. D.It should be with more conversations.4. What should parents do to keep their children’s interest in reading?A.Sign up for reading clubs B.Buy a wide variety of e-books.C.Make reading experience interesting. D.Talk less with their children whenreading.4. There’s a new AI bot: ChatGPT, and you’d better pay attention, even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence. The tool is an AI chat bot system that OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve.ChatGPT remembers the thread of your dialogue, using previous questions and answers to inform its next responses. It derives its answers from huge volumes of information on the Internet. ChatGPT is built on top of the OpenAI GPT-3 family of large language models and is fine-tuned (a method of transfer learning) using both supervised and reinforcement learning (监督和强化学习).You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative. A few days after its launch, more than I million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS analyst Lloyd Walmsley estimated in February 2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in January, accomplishing in 2 months what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two and a half years.ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research phase. But when too many people hop onto the server, it overloads and can’t process your request. It just means you should try visiting the site at a later time when fewer people are trying to access it. If you want to skip the wait and have reliable access, there is an option for you. As of Feb. 1, 2023, OpenAI has aChatGPT pro plan, ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to have general access even during peak times. This service does come at a cost of $20/month.However, ChatGPT can not replace Google. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence robot that provides solutions to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge due to its programming but Google has unlimited knowledge which is updated every day.1. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about ChatGPT?A.Its language model. Why does the author list figures in paragraph 3?A.To show the popularity of ChatGPT.B.To stress the high cost of inventing ChatGPT.C.To present the creativity of artificial intelligence.D.To prove the necessity of developing tools for chatting online.3. Were We Happier Without Social Media?Social media is now fully implanted in our daily lives. We spend an average of two hours a day sharing, liking, tweeting, and updating information on social media. Indeed, the wonderful digital platforms enrich our lives with information and entertainment. 1Social media and stress2 In fact, it might turn out an endless stream of stress. In 2015,researchers tried to discover if social media causes more stress than it relieves. In the survey, women were reported being more stressed than men. Twitte r was found to be “a contributor to stress”, because it increased people’s awareness of pressure.Social media and relationshipFinding people sharing your ideals online might be delightful. 3 It could happen, but, in reality, it’s your family, friends and teachers that bring you the true delight. But the time you spend on people on social media is greater than those you see in real life. On the platforms, the liquid relationships without real details don’t really translate into true connections in your re al life.Social media and entertainmentSocial media may provide us with excitement, during which dopamine (多巴胺) would be released to keep us entertained. Entertainment has never been so easy with dopamine released so quickly, getting us addicted. For that excitement, we mortgage (抵押) a more meaningful and enjoyable life.4Therefore, the answer to the question should be clear now. The feeling of being loved and being able to count on different people makes us happier. Social media sometimes just cheats us. 5 For the real happiness, we should maintain contact, talk face-to-face, listen to each other.6. 2019-2020学年江苏省徐州市高一下学期期中考试语文试题(含答案)
