Some of them “migrate”. This means they travel to other places w here the weather is warmer or they can find food. Many birds migrate in the fall. Because the trip can be dangerous, some travel in large flocks. For example, wild geese fly in noisy, “V”-shaped groups. Other kinds of birds fly alone. How do they know when it is time to leave for the winter? Scientists are still studying this. Many see migration as part of a yearly cycle of changes a bird goes through. The cycle is controlled by changes in the amount of daylight and the weather.Birds can fly very long distances. For example, the Arctic tern(北极燕鸥) nests close to the North Pole in summer. In autumn, it flies south all the way to Antarctica(南极洲). Each spring it returns north again. Most birds migrate shorter distances. But how do they find their way to the same place each year? Birds seem to navigate like sailors once did, using the sun, moon and stars for direction. They also seem to have a compass in their brain for using the Earth’s magnetic field.[词海拾贝]1. migrate v. → migration n. 迁徙2. flock n. 一群3. nest vt. 筑巢n. 巢, 窝4. navigate vt. 导航; 航行5. compass n. 指南针6. magnetic adj. 地磁的; 有磁性的[我学我思]1. get through度过2. go through 经受3. all the way(to) 一直(到)4. 2020版英语新教材外研必修一同步学案:Unit+5 Into+the+wild和答案

Unit 5Into the wild对于动物的灭绝,很多人猜测是气候的原因,其实,有时候人类才是动物生存最大的威胁。

我们要保护动植物,与它们和谐相处。

Climate change, not human hunting, may have wiped out th e thylacine (袋狼), according to a new study based on DNA fro m thylacines' bones. The meat-eating marsupials (有袋动物) died out on mainlan d Australia a few thousand years ago, but survived in Tasmania, an island of southeast Australia separated from the mainland, u ntil the 1930s. Until then, scientists had believed the cause of th is mainland extinction (灭绝) was increased activity from native Australians and dingoes (Australian wild dogs).Scientists behind the University of Adelaide study, which w as published in the Journal of Biogeography on Thursday, collec ted 51 new thylacine DNA samples from fossil bones and muse um skins —the largest data set of thylacine DNA to date. The paper concluded that climate change starting about 4,000 years a go —in particular drier seasons caused by the weather systems known as El Niño —Southern Oscillation (南方涛动) —was likely the main cause of the mainland extinction. The ancient DNA showed that the mainland extinction of th ylacines was rapid, and not the result of loss of genetic diversity. There was also evidence of a population crash in thylacines in Tasmania at the same period of time, reducing their numbers an d genetic diversity.Associate Professor Jeremy Austin said Tasmania would hav e been protected from mainland Australia's warmer, drier climate due to its higher rainfall. He argued that climate change was “t he only thing that could have caused, or at least started, an exti nction on the mainland and caused a population crash in Tasman ia.”“They both happened at about the same time, and the othe r two things that had been talked about in the past that may ha ve driven thylacines to extinction on the mainland were dingoes and humans. So the only explanation left is climate change. And because the population crash happened at the same time and th e species went extinct on the mainland, our argument is that the re's a common theme there and the only common theme is that there is this change in climate.”。
