Are you a social media addict? Are you always checking your smartphone to see how many 'likes' you've received for your latest post? Maybe you feel comforted by the sound that someone has sent you a message?

Don't worry, you're not alone. We check our phones an average of 150 times a day, and around 30% of the total time spent online is devoted to social media. Some experts now fear this habit could be damaging our mental health.

This is something particularly bothering young adults, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh. It found the more they used social media, the more likely they are to be depressed(沮丧的). In tests, those people who checked social media frequently were 2.7 times more likely to be depressed compared to those who spent most of their time generally surfing the internet, who had just 1.7 times the risk.

Some of us certainly feel sad when we're ignored on social media sites, or when we see someone else having a better time than us. But depression is a more serious condition and clinical psychologist, Abigael San, recently told the BBC that, "It’s a real issue, and it’s been getting significantly worse over the last 5-6 years. You can get so hooked(上瘾的) that it takes you away from your real relationships." However, Abigael does admit that social media is more likely to worsen pre-existing issues than directly cause them.

Other research by Glasgow University found that teenagers are affected by the 24-hour demands of their social media accounts. It found that those with higher levels of emotional investment in social media, and who use it at night, were more likely to feel depressed and anxious.

Despite these warning signs, why do some of us continue to keep clicking? Well, I suppose we all want to be liked and we don't want to miss out on a conversation that's taking place online. But we need to know when to switch off our virtual(虚拟的) online world and connect with the real world instead.

32. Who is more likely to be depressed according to the study?

A. People surfing the Internet regularly.

B. People checking social media frequently.

C. People longing for more messages.

D. People receiving a few “likes ” for their posts.

33. Why does the author give a quote from Abigael San in Para.4?

A. To give a more supporting example.

B. To introduce the coming topic.

C. To stress the importance of social media.

D. to explain the cause of a social media addict.

34. Why do people get addicted to social media according to the author?

A. Because they have more time and money.

B. Because the virtual world is much more attractive.

C. Because emotional investment in social media benefits them.

D. Because they want to attract more attention.

35.What’s the passage mainly about?

A. It’s common for teenagers to be a social medial addict.

B. Using smartphone does harm to people’s health.

C. social media addiction contributes to depression.

D. It’s better to stay away from the virtual online world.

A typical school day in the UK starts around 8:30 am. This is often even earlier elsewhere in the world, with students sitting down to their first lesson at 7:30 am in the US. The average

te enager ideally needs eight to nine hours’ sleep each night, but in reality a lot of teenagers struggle to get this much. A lot of the problems arise because our sleep patterns are not fixed, and they change as we grow.

So a later school start time could help to solve this problem, by ensuring to get their eight plus hours of sleep and react properly to their body’s natural rhythms (规律). There has been a general shift over the past 25 years to shorten the school day. This is not at the cost of teaching time (which has remained constant) but at the cost of natural breaks, which has led to reduced lunch time and lesson breaks.

Later start times could help teens’ grades and health. This is mainly because it makes the management of children easier. Supervising (监管) hundreds of children “playing” requires effective staffing (人员配备). And there is always the fear that behavior worsens during breaks. So the theory goes that having them in class and strictly supervised must be better.

But this means that students barely have enough time to absorb what they were doing in maths before suddenly they are thrust into ancient history. And teaching staff also transit from one class to another, with hardly a rest or time to refocus.

Clearly rethinking the school day could benefit everyone involved. Anyway, it could also lead to better achievement in teenagers and less of a struggle for parents in the mornings. For teachers, it could also mean a less stressful day all around and what could be better than that?

8.How do schools often shorten the school day?

A. They reduce children’s lunch time and lesson breaks.

B. They reduce the teaching time.

C. They properly adjust children’ natural rhythms.

D. They increase more holidays.

9. What’s the purpose of the children’ short lesson breaks according to the text?

A. To supervise children more easily.

B. To make children quickly take in what they.

Learned.

C. To reduce children’s excitement.

D. To make children behave better in class.

10. What can we learn about later school start time from the text?

A. It will add to the teacher’s pressure.

B. It has always been there for 25 years.

C. Parents may support it.

D. It benefits the students only.

11. What can be the best title for the text?

A. The benefits of a less stressful day.

B. The benefits of later school start time.

C. How to solve teenagers’ sleep problem.

D. The reasons why teenagers sleep differently.

Working in a team can be rewarding, but at times it can be difficult. To create a successful team, effective communication methods are necessary. Here we've outlined some ways to avoid some common team mistakes as well as some helpful advice.

1. Communicate

3. Support group member's ideas

If a teammate suggests something, always consider it ! ____68___And this makes you a good team member. After all, nobody likes a know-it-all.

4. Listen Actively

Look at the person who's speaking to you, nod, ask questions and acknowledge what's said by paraphrasing points that have been made. If you're unclear about something that's been said, ask for more information to clear up any confusion before moving on. Effective communication is a vital part of any team.___69___

Each week New York-based hairstylist Mark Bustos tries to make a small difference in people's lives 41 giving haircuts to homeless

people. During the week, Mark works in his high-class salon, but each Sunday, he walks around the city asking people 42 they'd like a haircut. He then gives them a stylish haircut— 43 same kind he would give to any paying customer, except that these are done for free for those who are homeless or cannot afford a haircut 44 (them).

Mark's work began in 2012 when visiting his family in the Philippines. Instead of just

45 (take) a typical, relaxing vacation, he decided to give poor local children haircuts. “I felt so happy doing it that I've continued since returning,” Mark explains.

Changing someone's appearance can have a huge impact on their life. Remember the homeless retired soldier who received a haircut? He found a job, 46 (rent) a house and quit drinking alcohol

afterwards. 47 (simple) changing how a person looks can give them a huge increase in 48 (confident).

Mark Bustos proves that there are many ways 49 (give), and that you can easily use your 50 (person) abilities to make a difference in somebody's life.

Dear Editor,

I used to be a physician in the children's department of a hospital. From time to time I treated children who had poisoned by medicine with older family members. The children didn't know the medicine was of dangerous; they just knew it tasted sweet. Children easily open the bottle what we now use in China.

Some days before I talked about medicines with an American. He showed me a sort of plastic bottle. The design was quite simple and I'm sure our Chinese

factories could produce these bottles. The top of the bottle can be opened by pressing down on them while turning, which is difficult for most young children to do so, though grown-up can open these bottles very easily.

I'm certainly that the expense of making such tops would be very small. As a doctor, I'd love to see this doing. And most parents would be grateful.

Sincerely yours

Li Hua

That is why some friendships don't last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding. Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose your friend's trust. Good friends always rely on one another to speak and act honestly. Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better. Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with each other. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so that you can understand the problem better. No two friendships are exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding. 1.Some friendships don't last long because _____. A. there are too many people who want to make friends B. some people receive friendship but don't give friendship back C. those who give others friendship receive friendship from others D. they don't know friendship is something serious 2. According to the passage, honesty is _____. A. something countable B. the base of friendship C. as important as money D. more important than anything else 3. Which of the following isn't mentioned in the passage.? _____. A. Always tell your friends the truth. B. Sharing your mind with your friends is of great value. C. Discussing your problems with your friends often helps to solve the problem. D. A friend who gives you his lunch money is a true friend. 4. In the third paragraph, the underlined word they refers to (指) _____. A. generosity and friendship B. generosity and sharing C. your ideas and feelings D. your clothes B If you go into the forest with friends, stay with them. If you don‘t,you may get lost. If you get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends—let them find you. You can help them find you by staying in one place. There is another way to help your friends or other people to find you. You can shout or whistle three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help. Keep up shouting or whistling. Always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making a noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They will give you two shouts or two whistles. When a signal is given twice,it is an answer to a call for help. If you don‘t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house with branches. Make yourself a bed with leaves and grass. When you need some water, you have to leave your little branch house to look for it. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk in order to go back again easily. When you are lost, the most important thing to do is to stay in one place. 5.Which signal is a call for help? A.shouting here and there B.crying twice C.shouting or whistling three times together D. whistling every where in the forest 6.When you hear two shouts or two whistles, you know that ____________________.
