As a key university under the direct administration of the Education Ministry, Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) has been one of the "State 211 Project" institutions. 它研究介质运动、变形、流动的宏观、细观乃至微观行为，揭示力学过程与物理、化学、生物学等过程的相互作用规律。
力学为人类认识自然和生命现象、开拓工程设计提供理论和方法，对科学技术的发展具有重要的引领、支撑和推动作用。
力学在其发展过程中，形成了“实验观测、理论分析、力学建模、数值计算”相结合的研究方法和学术风格，十分有利于对实际问题中基本规律的认识。
20世纪以来，力学学科在固体力学、流体力学、动力学与控制、工程力学的主体架构上，又与生物、环境、化学、物理等其他领域交叉结合形成了生物力学、物理力学、环境力学等分支。
力学的发展趋势体现为：在非线性研究领域内不断有所突破，更加重视高性能计算、更加重视先进的实验技术、与其他学科的进一步交叉与融合、力学与工程技术的结合等。
我校本学科特色鲜明，主要表现在力学与材料科学、力学与土木工程、力学与船舶海洋工程、力学与飞行器结构的交叉融合方面，有材料复合新技术国家重点实验室、道路桥梁与结构工程湖北省重点实验室、高性能舰船技术教育部重点实验室等作为科学研究基地支撑。
形成了先进功能材料力学、复合材料力学与结构、流固耦合动力学和冲击动力学四个具有鲜明特色的学术研究方向。
本学科研究领域以材料的力学行为，特别是新型功能和复合材料的力学行为研究为主，兼顾大型工程结构的应用与分析研究，致力于新型功能材料跨尺度力学行为、基础力学理论和应用研究；智能复合材料与结构的一体化力学行为研究、复合材料的结构分析与设计研究和复合材料的成型工艺力学研究；流体与工程结构的相互作用研究及大型结构的设计理论研究；材料在冲击和高温高压等极端条件下的力学、物理行为的研究。
