I was shaking as I turned it over to see my grade. I squeezed my eyes shut, too scared to look at first. But then I forced them open...and I got a 92%! A huge grin spread across my face. All that hard work paid off!I did really well on the vocabulary section, which was a huge relief. We had to match words to their definitions, and I aced that part. I've been using my mom's system of making flashcards with the words on one side and the meanings on the other. Every night before bed, she quizzes me on a new set. It's kinda boring, but it definitely works.The reading comprehension part was pretty tough though. We had to read these two long passages, one about the rainforest and another about the invention of the lightbulb. Then we had to answer questions showing we understood the main ideas, minor details, vocabulary in context, and things like that.The rainforest one wasn't too bad since we just learned about that habitat in science class. But I got kinda confused on the lightbulb passage. I'll have to go over that more carefully.My biggest struggle was the writing section, as usual. We had to write a short essay arguing whether we think elementary schools should have cafeterias or kids should bring lunches from home. I argued that cafeterias are better because they ensure all kids get a nutritious meal. But Mrs. Johnson marked me down for not having a clear thesis statement and lacking transition sentences between paragraphs. She's totally right, I need to work on my organization skills.Speaking of organization, we lose major points if our essays aren't formatted properly too. We have to indent paragraphs, use proper capitalization and punctuation, and include a heading with our name, date, and class. Little things like that are such a pain, but they're important I guess.The grammar section wasn't too bad. It was just correcting sentences with errors in subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, etc. I think I did okay there. Grammar has always been one of my stronger areas in English.The only part I totally bombed was the spelling section. Ugh, spelling is the worst! We had to correctly spell words that wereread out loud. I misspelled so many of them, like "receive", "exercise", and "accommodate". Those don't even seem that hard, but I always mix up where to put the vowels and consonants. My spelling skills are just abysmal.Overall though, I'm really proud of my 92 and I think my parents will be too. A few of my friends said they struggled a lot, so I feel lucky. Although Ryan got a 98, that little show-off! He's just really gifted when it comes to English though. The rest of us mere mortals have to work our butts off for those kinds of grades.I definitely have some areas I need to improve on for next time. More reading practice to work on my comprehension skills. Keeping my essays organized with a clear thesis and transitions. And spelling, spelling, spelling! The recording was about a boy named Tim who was getting ready for his birthday party. I actually found this section pretty easy because the voice on the recording spoke clearly and slowly.
