第三部分阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

A

One Sunday morning in June 1959 my mother walked into my room. “Surprise!” she said, proudly holding up a yellow dress. “I made it just for you. What do you thi nk?

I bit my tongue. How could I tell Mom it was the ugliest dress I had ever seen?

It is perfect for church,” my mother continued delightedly. “I wish someone had made a dress like this for me.”

Too bad you can’t wear it, I thought. But I knew Mom had spent a lot of time on the dress. No one should refuse.

Unwillingly I put it on.

All through church I prayed, “Lord, let me get out of here without anyone seeing me. Especially Dennis Pearce, the boy I had a crush on, one of the coolest boys at Neptune High School.”Although we were in some of the same classes, Dennis had never taken any notice of me. Every time I got near him, I became tongue-tied.

At the end of the service I rushed for the door. But I had to wait on the steps while my parents chatted with their friends. Just a little while longer…Then out of the corner of my eye I saw the Pearces coming near. Before I could escape, Dennis was right beside me.

I started talking, hoping if I kept it up he wouldn’t notice my ugly dress. “I’m going to college in September,” I said.

“That’s great,” Dennis replied “I got accepted to police academy.”

“Wow!” I said. Somehow I kept the conversation going. The next thing I knew was that Dennis had asked me out on a date!

We courted(恋爱) through college, and eventually got married. Months after our wedding I asked Dennis if he remembered the day he had first asked me out.

“Certainly I do,” he said. “You were always quiet in school. I didn’t think you’d be much fun. But you were so lively when we talked on the church steps, I wanted to get to know you be tter.” Maybe that yellow dress wasn’t what I would have chosen, but that day it was the perfect dress for me.

C. Dennis fell in love with the author at first sight.

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting moments for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. Every kid was given a job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year.

Some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during th e previous year. During the previous year Rita had carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. All the children knew Rita would be given the best job.

But there was a big surprise. Each child received a normal job. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. Though the teacher insisted that this ant was very special, Rita felt disappointed. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. Even her father became very angry with the teacher and he encouraged Rita to pay no attention to this insignificant pet. However, Rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest.

Rita started investigating all about her little ant and gave the ant the best food, and it grew quite a bit bigger.

One day, a man, who looked very important, came into their classroom and declared, “Your class has been chosen to accompany me, this summer, on a journey to the tropical rain forest, where we will investigate all kinds of insects. Among all the schools of this region, your class has best cared for the little

ant.”

That day the school was filled with joy and celebration. Everyone thanked Rita for having been so patient and responsible. And many children learnt that to be given the most important task you have to know how to be responsible even in what are the smallest tasks.

60. What did the teacher base his decision on when giving out jobs to the children?

A. Their characters and interests.

B. Their class performance during the previous year.

C. Their working performance during the previous year.

D. Their ability of managing their accounts during the previous year.

61. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A. Each child got an important job.

B. Each child got an interesting job.

C. The perfect student got the job of everyone’s preference.

D. The most responsible student got the job of least interest.

62 What is Rita’s attitude to her father’s suggestion?

A. Negative.

B. Uncertain.

C. Totally positive.

D. Acceptive.

63. We can infer that the man who made the declaration is a _________.

A. hunter

B. director

C. biologist

D. principal

C

Something that has always interested me about Abraham Lincoln is,not surprisingly, his sense of humor. As far as I can tell,he's the first American President to have one.

That's because the term“sense of humor,,really wasn't in common usage until the eighteen-sixties and seventies. In the eighteen-forties and fifties,it was called“the sense of the ridiculous," and didn't have the positive connotations(隐含意义)that“sense of humor" has today. Back then, what was ridiculous was what invited ridicule(讥笑).Funniness and cruelty went hand in hand.Of course, they still do a lot of arm-in-arm walking in our day as well.

Lincoln’s humor was very different because, for one thing,it was actually "humor"as what the word meant in his time. We don't make the distinction between "wit(风趣)”and "humor”anymore; but in the nineteenth century people did.Wit was unpleasant and offensive while humor was pleasant and sympathetic. It’s the difference we note now when we distinguish between "laughing with”and“laughing at.”Lincoln was much more about "laughing with”than "laughing at.”And when“laughing at,”it was often himself he was teasing.

In the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates, when Douglas accused Lincoln of being two-faced,Lincoln replied, referencing his plain looking,“Honestly,if I were two-faced,would I be showing you this one?”And,in a way,Lincoln's face itself tells us much about his sense of humor.

You can comb through thousands of photographs of politicians, soldiers, and the like from Lincoln's time and not find a single smile.

True, the long exposures(曝光)required for photographs of that time made smiling difficult.Yet Lincoln alone,as far as I can tell, overcame that difficulty.

Interestingly .while having a sense of humor,or at least the appearance of one provided by

comedy writers .has become a necessary characteristic for an American President in our time,in the nineteenth century, too much humor was considered problem. -And that was the case for Lincoln.A journalist covering the Lincoln-Douglas debates commented that“I could not take a real personal liking to the man, owing to an inborn weakness…that he was extremely, fond of iokes, anecdotes, and stories.”

64.We can infer from Paragraph 2 that__

A .the American President could influence the use of English

E. t he term "sense of humor”wasn't invented until the 1860s

C .what is funny to someone might be offensive to someone else

D .the concept of humor remains the same despite the passing of time

65 .The underlined words“this one”in Paragraph 4 refer to__.

A. Lincoln's unattractive face

B. Lincoln's sense of humor

C.debate they were having

D.cruelty that went with funniness

66 We rarely see people from Lincoln's time wear smile in their photos because_.

A. being humorous was considered inappropriate

B. they found it quite funny to smile before camera

C. not smiling for photographs was the fashion

D. photography technology then was not advanced

67.What might the writer think of the journalist covering the Lincoln-Douglas debates?

A. His comment accurately reflected his time,

B. He created a false picture of Lincoln.

C. He was prejudiced and self-centered.

D. He was brave to point out Lincoln's weakness.

Vélib (English free bicycle or bicycle freedom), Paris’s bicycle rental system, inspired a new city culture against climate changes. Residents here can rent a well-built bicycle from hundreds of public stations and ride to their destinations, an inexpensive, healthy and low-carbon choice to hopping in a car or a bus.

But this latest French utopia (乌托邦) has met a common reality Many of the specially designed bikes, which cost $3,500 each, are showing up on black markets in Eastern Europe and Northern Africa. Many others are being taken away for city joy rides and then thrown away by roadsides, their wheels bent and tires stripped (车胎被拆卸). With 80% of the early 20,600 bicycles stolen or damaged, the program’s organizers have had to hire several hundred people just to fix them. And the city-subsidized budget has been a blow to the Parisians. The symbol of an eco-friendly city has become a new source of criminality (犯罪行为). The Vélib was aimed at civilizing city travel. However, it has increased rudeness.

Used mainly for traveling in the center of the city, the Vélib’s progra m is by all means a success. After swiping a credit card for a deposit (押金) at an electronic docking station, a rider pays one euro per day, or 29 euros for an annual pass, for unlimited access to the bike. Daily use averages 50,000 to 150,000 trips, depending on the season, and the bicycles have proved to be a hit with tourists, who help power the economy.

By now at least 8,000 bikes have been stolen and 8,000 damaged so badly that they had to be replaced—nearly 80 percent of the first stock.

72. France started Vélib with the purpose of ______.

A. saving money spent on oil for African children

B. building an eco-friendly city to prevent climate changes

C. building up the strength of the citizens in Paris

D. attracting more travelers to experience the wonderful scenes

A. some people stole the bikes and sold them illegally

B. this kind of bike is made with best quality

C. this kind of bike sells well because of its famous name

D. people there need bikes for a living

74. In the second paragraph the author ______.

A. warns the government to give up the plan

B. lists some bad results of the Vélib plan in Paris

C. reminds people not to rent bikes in Paris

D. reports the stealing cases to the police in Paris

75. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?

A. 8,000 Stolen and 8,000 Badly Damaged

B. French Utopia Helps City Travel

C. French Bicycles Are Ruining Its Capital

D. French Model of Bicycle-Sharing Meets Reality

第三部分阅读理解(共两节; 满分40 分)

第一节(共15 小题;每小题 2 分,满分30 分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

One Sunday morning in June 1959 my mother walked into my room. “Surprise!”she said, proudly holding up a yellow dress. “I made it just for you. What do you think?”

I bit my tongue. How could I tell Mom it was the ugliest dress I had ever seen?

“It’s perfect for church,” my mother continued delightedly. “I wish someone h ad made a dress like this for me.”

Too bad you can’t wear it, I thought. But I knew Mom had spent a lot of time on the dress. No one should refuse.

Unwillingly I put it on.

All through church I prayed, “Lord, let me get out of here without anyo ne seeing me. Especially Dennis Pearce, the boy I had a crush on, one of the coolest boys at Neptune High School.” Although we were in some of the same classes, Dennis had never taken any notice of me. Every time I got near him, I became tongue-tied.

At the end of the service I rushed for the door. But I had to wait on the steps while my parents chatted with their friends. Just a little while longer…Then out of the corner of my eye I saw the Pearce coming near.

We courted (恋爱) through college, and eventually got married. Months after our wedding I asked Dennis if he remembered the day he had first asked me out.

“Certainly I do,” he said. “You were always quiet in school. I didn’t think you’d be much fun. But you were so lively when we talked on the church steps, I wanted to get to know you better.” Maybe that yellow dress wasn’t what I would have chosen, but that day it was the perfect dress for me.

56. Why did the author accept such a dress at the beginning?

A. Because she was fond of its new pattern.

B. Because her Mom just bought it for her as a present.

D. Because she understood her Mom’s love.

57. The author tried to carry on with the conversation with Dennis, hoping _________.

A. she would catch other boys’ attention

B. Dennis would get her out on a date

C. Dennis wouldn’t take notice of her dress

D. she could be noticed by Dennis’ parents

58. The underlined part “had a crush on” in Paragraph 6 probably means “___________ ”.

A. loved deeply

B. met by chance

C. looked down on

D. worried about

59. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Dennis thought the author was a fun girl at school.

B. The author couldn’t have chosen a better dress that day.

C. Dennis fell in love with the author at first sight.

D. The author thought Dennis should have known her better.
