Chapter I Introduction

1.1Statement of Purpose

With the spread of economic globalization,the booming exchanges of Chinese and W estern cultures as well as the innovation of Internet technology,lar ge numbers of overseas teleplays are brought into China.In particular,American teleplays attract the young and intellectuals such as school students,white-collars as well as high-level retirees and so on,due to its high quality production,professional scheme,extensive theme,and attractive story.Especially,American sitcom has become one of the most popular types of American teleplays in China,such as the Big Bang Theory,T wo and A Half Man,as well as T wo Broke Girls,not to mention the classic series of Friends.In view of this lar ge demand,subtitle translation has become more and more important in China in recent years.As a bridge for Chinese audiences to better understand original American teleplays,it begins to shoulder an essential role.At the same time,subtitle translation study is far from mature and systematic among translation studies nowadays. There are not many theoretical references and shaping strategies for subtitle translators during their practice.Also,the subtitle translators are mainly from interest groups, instead of professional translators with rich experience.Consequently the quality of translation work varies.

After joining a professional subtitle group two years ago,the author has been continuously trained and taking practice since then.During this practice,the author finds there are still plenty of issues about subtitle translation that need to be raised and well discussed,such as how to make a good preparation before subtitle translation and how to make a good combination of practice and translation theory during the translation process as well as how to master feasible translation techniques in subtitle translation.Additionally,there are still many prevailing errors in subtitle translation.In order to solve problems above,the author assumes that it’s necessary to do a systematic analysis of the subtitle translation practice and then summarize a series of translation approaches that may be helpful for future subtitle translation.
