SCRIPTST1 CAROLE JONES: Now, about a million people are expected to attend the main day of the Notting Hill Carnival in west London today. Thousands of officers will be on duty for Europe's biggest street party, and the police are calling on those who might commit a crime, not to spoil it for people who have come to enjoy themselves. Well Debbie Gardener from the Notting Hill Carnival Trust join us from Notting Hill Good morning to you. Well so far there have been what, about 34 arrests, and some police officers, five, five injured. But, er, this is relatively calm, really, isn't this, for, for the carnival?DEBBIE GARDENER: Yeah. I mean, yesterday was, was a fantastic day. Um, it was lovely weather, the crowds that came, you know, lots of kids. It was a brilliant day.T2 CAROLE JONES: So is it any difference this year? Because you've got a newchief executive, haven't you? Can you hear me?DEBBIE GARDENER: Pm sorry, I didn't hear that, the traffic was passing. I can now yeah.CAROLE JONES:Is it any, is it any different this year? You do have a new chief executive. Is the, is the mood different?DEBBIE GARDENER:Um, er, we've got a new chair, Um, Chris, Professor Chris Mullard. The mood is different. Um, it's one of partnership. What can we expect?DEBBIE GARDENER: Very much like yesterday, but, um, bigger. You know, there'll be more costumes. It's adults' day today. We're encouraging people with children not to come. Um, but there will be more costumes, um, there are lots of things going on. Um, and it's gonna be a great party, it's gonna be a great event.CAROLE JONES: So, this carnival, it's been going for over 30 years now. Um, has it, how much has it changed over the years in its kind of style. 'Cos it started off as a very, very local based event, didn't it?DEBBIE GARDENER:It was, it was a local, a local event. It was for, Um, young children in the area. It's now known all over the world. And we get people coming here from all over the world. Both to take part, and to watch what's going on. Um, the music that's played it represents all cultures and all nationalities. It's, it's a, a brilliant example of diversity and inclusivity.T4CAROLE JONES:One, one of the cri…, criticisms that's leveled sometimes, by people, about the carnival is that it, it's becoming more urban, more influenced by business, that it, it's moved away from its Caribbean roots. What do you say to that?DEBBIE GARDENER: No. We've, we've eff.. we've made efforts this year to encourage commercial businesses to partner bands. Put their money, rather than put their money into putting a truck on the road, to put their money into localcommunity groups that make the costumes and that produce the music that you see over the two days of Carnival. And we think that's worked really well this year.CAROLE JONES: Er, Debbie what time does the procession start then?
