Although the earliest remains of primitive horses have been found on the North Americancontinent, many scientists believe this small species travel over a land mass in the Bering Sea to found the beginnings of the modern horse in Asia. It became extinct in America. Other scientists believe that the horse may have originated in Asia. In any event the animal soon spread into China, Europe, and the Middle East. The first modern horses to be introduced into the American continent came with the early Spanish explorers. Horses were bred into many types. The heavy horses developed in the low countries of Europe and were used for work and by the medieval knights to hold them and their heavy armor. The oldest horses left in the 20th century are found in Mongolia. Horses are said to rate in intelligence after the ape, elephant, and dog. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtainedwith a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a worldwide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In a developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate maylead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline. 1. A large population may mean _________. A) higher productivity, but a lower average income B) lower productivity, but a higher average income C) higher productivity and a higher average income D) lower productivity and a lower average income 2. A large population may offer more scope for the development of _________.A) economy B) extensive cultivation C) transportation D) agriculture 3. In highly industrialized countries, unemployment may result from_________. A) a decreasing birthrat e B) an increasing birthrate C) a stable birthrate D) a birth control program 4. What may the government of a developed country prefer? A) A rapidly increasing population.B) A slowly increasing population. C) A rapidly decreasing population. D) A slowly decreasing population. 5. Why is it difficult to carry out a worldwide birth control program? A) Because it will do harm to the national economy in most countries. B) Because it will lead to complex social problems in developing countries. C) Because people are unwilling to practice birth control. D) Because different governments have different opinions. B 2. C 3. A 4.D 5. Thousands of years ago, ten of our very distant ancestors were hungry. They went out and picked berries or dug up roots to eat. Four of them chose poisonous food and died. The remaining six noticed that their food was safe to eat. They told their children, who, in turn, passed the messages on to their descendants. In this way, habit became a vital factor in the survival of mankind: if you ate the right plant, you lived; if you wanted to make your own experiments, you would probably die. The importance of habit in the survival of human species is an interesting matter. Even today, most of us hesitate when we are invited to eat a new type of food or drink something we have not tasted before. Even if the food or drink is offered by a friend, we are usually not at all anxious to experiment and accept the offer. When you got up tomorrow morning, notice which shoe or sock you put on first. Then notice which one you put on first onthe other day. You may discover that (a) you tend to put on one shoe or sock first every day, and that (b) if you are right-handed, you usually deal with your left shoe or sock first. If you try to change this habit, you may find it uncomfortable or annoying, and you will soon return to your old habit. When it comes to other matters, we often follow a fixed pattern. We sleep in one or two favorite ways. We often follow familiar routes even when they are not the shortest or best. We often wear a watch on the same wrist even when there is no real reason for doing so. In hundreds of other ways, we show that we are creatures of habit, following fixed patterns of behavior. This characteristic can help us to survive but it can be a barrier to progress too, We must be alert and not let a beneficial factor become a harmful one.. 1. The best title for this passage might be ______. A)Habit--- a Barrier to Progress B) We Are Creatures of habit C) Various Patterns of Human Behavior D) The Survival of Mankind 2. The first paragraph of this passage is mainly about ______. A) the danger of making experiments B) the food our distant ancestors ate C) the importance of habit in the survival of mankind D) the behavior of younger generations of the following statements is True according to the passage?A) Most people hesitate to eat new things they have never tasted before A) Habit can be harmful to the development of mankind B) People usually like to taste new things at the risk of their life.

XXX、XXX、XXX、XXX

Unit112 I suspect not everyone who loves the country would be happy living the way we do. It takes a couple of special qualities. One is a tolerance for solitude. Because we are so busy and on such a tight budget, we don't entertain much. During the growing season there is no time for socializing anyway. Jim and Emily are involved in school activities, but they too spend most of their time at home.

13 The other requirement is energy -- a lot of it. The way to make self-sufficiency work on a small scale is to resist the temptation to buy a tractor and other expensive laborsaving devices. Instead, you do the work yourself. The only machinery we own (not counting the lawn mower) is a little three-horsepower rotary cultivator and a 16-inch chain saw.
