I just started 5th grade a few weeks ago. I had the most amazing summer vacation this year and I can't wait to tell you all about it!It all started at the very end of the school year last spring. My parents surprised me and my little brother Tommy with the exciting news that we were going on a big adventure over summer break. They said we were going to visit a place called the Galapagos Islands! I had never heard of the Galapagos before, but they told me it was a very special group of islands far away in the Pacific Ocean near South America. The coolest part was that it's home to all kinds of incredible animals that you can't find anywhere else in the world.As soon as school let out in late June, we hopped on a plane and flew for what felt like forever to get there. The plane ride was kind of boring but I didn't mind because I was just so excited to see the Galapagos! After a quick stop in Ecuador, we took another small plane and finally arrived at one of the main islands called Santa Cruz Island. I had never seen anywhere quite like it before!The landscape was incredibly unique, with lots of volcanic rocks, cactus plants, and stunning blue waters all around. Our hotel was right on the beach and the sand was made up of crushed coral and sea shells. I couldn't wait to start exploring!The very first day, we went on a tour to a place called Las Grietas. It was this amazing canyon with ridges of volcanic rock and a amazing trench in the middle filled with crystal clear, turquoise-colored water. The water was a little chilly but Tommy and I had a blast swimming through the canyons, floating around, and jumping off the rocks into the water. We saw so many brightly colored fish and marine creatures we had never seen before. It felt like we were swimming in an amazing underwater world!The next few days, we went on tons of different guided hikes, snorkeling trips, kayak tours, and beach excursions all aroundSanta Cruz and some of the smaller islands nearby. We saw marine iguanas lounging on the rocks – they were these crazy dragon-looking lizards that can actually swim in the ocean! We watched sea lions napping on the beach and playing in the water's edge. Everywhere we went there were thesefunny-looking blue-footed boobies marching around making honking noises. Those birds were pretty much my favorite.On one of the snorkeling trips, our guide led us right up to a massive colony of Galapagos penguins hanging out on the rocks and swimming together. I couldn't believe there were actually penguins living near the equator! They looked so cute diving under the water and chasing schools of fish. I got to snorkel just a few feet away from them and watch their adorable antics up close. Simply amazing!Another day, we took a Zodiac boat tour around an island called Española and stopped to watch the incredible waved albatrosses perform their crazy mating dances. The big alpha male albatrosses would run around flapping their wings, sticking their beaks up in the air and making these goofy clacking noises to try to impress the females. Tommy and I were cracking up laughing at their silly dances, they looked so funny! We also sawlots of marine iguanas piled up together in these huge scaly piles trying to keep warm. It was hilarious and so cool to watch.I think my very favorite day of all was when we went hiking on the island of Isabela and got to see the famous Galapagos giant tortoises in the wild. These things were absolutely massive, like living boulders slowly plodding across the volcanic rocks. Our guide said some of the big adult males can weigh over 500 pounds! We stood there in awe watching a couple of them munching lazily on leaves and grasses, barely even noticing us. Seeing these ancient, peaceful creatures that have existed on these islands for millions of years was simply breathtaking. It felt like stepping back in time.Mom and Dad were pretty strict about us not touching or getting too close to any of the wildlife, which was probably a good thing because I definitely would have tried to hug or pet everything! The Galapagos animals are so tame and unfazed by humans because there aren't any natural predators on the islands. The guides taught us all about how precious and fragile these ecosystems are, and how we have to be super careful not to disturb them with our visits so the islands stay protected for centuries to come.In between all our daily adventures and excursions, we spent lots of time just relaxing and playing at the beach right near our hotel too.
