Beijing, Jan, 25( Xinhua) ---- China on Thursday announced it successfully cloned(克隆) wor ld’s first macaques(猕猴) from somatic cells (体细胞) by method that made Dolly. The two cloned macaques, named Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, were produced at the non-human primate research facility(非人类灵长类动物研究所) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) at the end of 2017. “ A third is expected this month and more this year.” said scientists.

The research was first published on the website of the scientific magazine Cell. Since the sheep Dolly was successfully cloned from an adult cell in 1997, other mammals(哺乳动物) have also been cloned, but macaques, which was closely related(相近的) to humans, have been a challenge.

Sun Qiang, director of the CAS non-human-primate research facility, led a group of researchers for three years to overcome(克服) the biological difficulties.
