Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart.“I have two kids in college, and I want to say ‘come home,’ but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education,” says Jacobs. The Jacobs family did work out a solution: They asked and received more aid form the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, butat least they will be able to finish school. With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear more families like the Jacobs. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around. At the same time, tuition(学费)continues to rise. A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% from 1982 to 2007, while average family income rose just 147%. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade,“I f we go on this way for another 25years, we won’t have an affordable system of higher education,” says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center. “The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.36.According to Paragraph 1, why did the plan of the Jacobs family fail?A. The twins wasted too much money.B. The father was out of work.C. To draw public attention to the needs of the tall.D. To attract more people to become its members.37. How did the Jacobs manage to solve their problem?A. They asked their kids to come home.B. They borrowed $20,000 from the school.C. They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.D. They got help from the school and the federal government.38.. Financial aid administrators believe that _______.A. more families will face the same problem as the JacobsesB. the government will receive more letters of complaintC. college tuition fees will double soonD. America’s unemployment will fall39.What can we learn about the middle class families from the text?A. They blamed the government for the tuition increase.B. Their income remained steady in the last decade.C. They will try their best to send kids to college.D. Their debts will be paid off within 25 years.40.According to the last paragraph, the government will .A. provide most students with scholarshipsB. dismiss some financial aid administratorsC. stop the companies from making student loansD. go on providing financial support for college studentsB.Homestay provides English language students with the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal(谷物类食品),bread and tea or coffee. FriendsIf you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.Self-Catering Accommodation in Private HomesAccommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. woman behind me asked,“What’s the best gift you’ve ever got?”I closed the magazine I’d paid too much for and listened for an answer.“What do you mean, like the best birthday present?”a young man said.“Probably the gold coin I got for graduation.”I threw my magazine onto a neighboring chair and thought about the question. What’s the best gift I’ve ever got?Good health aside, when it comes to material objects, for me the answer is easy.It was a high school graduation present,gift-wrapped and hand-delivered by my grandfather. He handed it to me and said,“Stay close to the land.Don’t be afraid to dig in and get a little dirt on you.”That fall,I went off to college and that shiny new green-handled spade with the silver blade(刀刃)hung untouched on the wall in my parents’garage.A few years later,I had my own family and that graduation spade made its way from my folks’garage into my own.I dug gardens, planted trees, roses and bushes. The spade was nothing but a tool. The years rolled by.The spade has lost some of its color and I’ve added some gray, but I still dig hard into the earth, more often than ever. It’s more than a trusted workout partner. It’s a reminder of my family, one proudly rooted in agriculture. It’s a useful tool with a memorable message about staying close to the earth.Priceless!A few months from now,my daughter will finish graduate school, and she has already had a job waiting in another city. She’s knowledge-rich but cash-poor,and though she’s expecting nothing from me,I have something valuable to give her before she moves away. It’ll be wrapped of course, and it’ll be worth the weight in gold.4.Why did the author mention his experience in the airport?A.To compare his gift with the man’s.B.To introduce the topic of the text.C.To recall his graduation ceremony.D.To share his way of killing time.5.How was the spade dealt with at first?A.It was hung on the wall.B.It was sold for gold coins.C.It was used to plant trees.D.It was wrapped without touch.6.What does the author consider the spade?A.A practical garden tool.B.An ordinary workout partner.C.A very precious present.D.A reminder of his school life.7.What can we infer from the text?A.The family makes a living by farming.B.The spade is kept in the garage at present.C.The author gradually changed his attitude to life.D.The spade will be passed down to the next generation.CPeople often ask how I decide where to go,and I usually get hesitated with my response,as I don’t actually have an answer to that. For more than three years,I have been making movements with the universe, traveling from location to location at seemingly random intervals.A friend of mine asked on the Internet if anybody was interested in a job teaching English in China. So I jumped on a coming plane.Walking into my first class,I was bombed by16strange children who couldn’t understand a single word out of my mouth. When I walked out of my last class, six months later,I had made a personal connection with them. Some of my students could barely speak Chinese or English. But somehow, through determination and force,we connected.Every class was not only a lesson in English, but in good fellowship, being a role model, being a parent, and being a friend.I became a father to some,an older brother to others.I was loved and adored, feared and hated.I had to learn discipline, and not only how to deal it out,but how to discipline and conduct myself as a role model. But in between the discipline,I had to make learning a fun experience. And they forgave me when I yelled or got upset. And when they threw temper or bruised their knee or missed their mommy,I forgave them, kissed their bruises better, and gave them a shoulder to cry on.Teaching English in China is,by far,the most emotionally rewarding and fulfilling thing I’ve ever challenged myself to do.I have walked away from this job with a softened heart, knowing that I have made a difference in so many lives.I want that.I want my teachings to be reciprocal because they taught me how to unconditionally open my heart and how to be a more loving and patient person.8.What can we learn about the writer before he came to China?A.He didn’t have a fixed job.B.He was a professional writer.C.He worked in a travel agency.D.He taught in a language school.9.What was the situation like when the author met his students for the first time?A.Hard.B.Exciting.C.Touching.D.Inspiring.10.What can we infer about the author from Paragraph3?A.He was casual and patient.B.He was responsible but sensitive.C.He was cautious but bad-tempered.D.He was self-reflective and considerate.11.What does the underlined word“reciprocal”in Paragraph4most probably mean?A.Beneficial.B.Interacted.C.Encouraging.D.Acceptable.DIf you read the news about honeybee survival,it’s all very confusing. The Hoover Institution’s Dr.Henry Miller notes,“The reality is that honeybee populations are not declining.According to U.N.Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO)statistics—the world’s honeybee population rose to80million colonies(群落)in2011from50million in1960.”Meanwhile Jennifer Sass of the Natural Resources Defense Council points out,“The number of managed honeybee colonies in the U.S.has dropped from4million hives(蜂群)in1970to2.5million today.”Surprisingly, both of these claims are ler points to the“global”commercial honeybee-hive count, which has grown considerably.Sass points to domestic colony numbers only, which have in fact declined.Far more bees are farmed for making honey than for pollination(传粉)services.Since more honey is now made overseas than it was in the past, more hives are kept overseas, and fewer in the United States and Europe. And the global number of commercial hives and honey they produce has grown to meet the demands of an expanding world population.Such shifts offer no evidence of a honeybee hive crisis. They simply represent the market forces of supply and demand. The FAO data also clarify that national or even regional declines in the size of the managed honeybee population cannot prove claims of a global pollinator decline or a pollination crisis. However,it emphasizes that solutions to those problems must be motivated locally, rather than globally.Solutions will follow only if we take a non-subjective look at the issues,so we can address them appropriately rather than have a crisis mentality. As I highlight in a recent post for The Hill,a big part of the solution lies at the very local level:with the beekeepers, farmers, and communities that surround them.12.What makes the news confusing?A.Various species.B.Different affects.plicated statistics.D.Contradictory conclusions.13.What contributes to the growth of commercial hives?A.The claims of the FAO.B.The shift of honey export.C.The increasing demands of honey.D.The more services of pollination.14.What’s the author’s attitude to the honeybee population issue?A.Supportive.B.Objective.C.Confused.D.Doubtful.15.What would be the best title for the text?A.Honeybee Crisis Solved or Not?B.Honeybee Population Declining or Not?C.Honeybee Market Global or Local?D.Honeybee Research Global or Local?Ⅱ.

Unit5 LearningfromnatureⅠ. AMiss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She was the kind of teacher that perhaps everyone has had at least once:scary. In class, she always taught us to take school seriously. She had been teaching for a long time and I was as afraid of her as anyone, including the boys who were typically naughty in the back row.But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap objects for pranks. One such prop(道具) had two parts:an ink bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a pool.Of all the people I could have tricked, uneiss Baugh. At the beginning of the class,I opened her book and placed the props on one of the pages. Then I waited for the fun. When Miss Baugh saw the bottle and the spilled ink,she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe up the ink with. The trick had succeeded beyondmy expectations. But then I suddenly knew I had no control over what would happen neiss Baugh tried to remove the ink with a paper towel, she discovered it was just a piece of black metal. She picked it up,her eyes sweeping the classroom with a deadly gaze. Then came the question:“Who did this?”After some hesitation,I raised my hand.Miss Baugh fie,and my classmates. And the n,most unexpectedly, she laughed.“Well,it certainly fooled me!” she said. She returned the props to me,and for a few seconds a sweet little aged lady appeared right where Miss Baugh stood. We got back to having a class. But something had changed for me.I began to realize that,if someone like Miss Baugh had a warm heart beneath that crusty surface, then other crusty people would probably do,too. That may have been the most valuable lesson I learned.1.Which words best describe Miss Baugh according to paragraph 1?A.Serious and experienced.B.Easy-going and selfless.C.Naughty and demanding.D.Scary and narrow-minded.2.What does the underlined word “pranks” probably mean in paragraph 2?A.Bets.B.Experiments.C.Tricks.D.Strategies.3.What can we learn from paragraph 4?A.Miss Baugh’s stare wasn’t as terrifying as before.B.The author was given away and finally raised his hand.C.Miss Baugh burst into laughter and gave the props back.D.A little aged lady entered the classroom to give a lecture.4.What valuable lesson did the author learn?A.Crusty people can be easily changed.B.Crusty people may be friendly to others.C.Crusty people are difficult to get along with.D.Crusty people are sensitive to others’ feelings.BDo you often compare yourself to other people?Comparisons can help to make decisions and motivate you but they can also pull you into a comparison trap.Whether it’s the number of goals you’ve scored at football or how many books you’ve read,it’s easy to compare yourself to someone else.Scienti sts say it’s a natural behaviour that helps humans learn from each other, live happily together and achieve more.Although comparing can be good for you,it’s not always helpful and you can find yourself stuck in a comparison trap. This is when you always measure yourself against others and base your feelings on how well they seem to be doing.Becky Goddard-Hill is a child therapist (someone who helps children understand their feelings) and author of CreateYourOwnConfidence. She says that comparisons can make us feel good and bad about ourselves.“Comparing up” means seeing someone doing better than you and using that to inspire yourself to aim higher and try harder.However,Goddard-Hill says,“Sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself and knock yourcon fidence.”“Comparing down” is when you see someone who seems like they’re not doing as well as you.“This might make you feel you’re doing well,”says Goddard-Hill,“but it can also stop you wanting to improve.”If your feelings depend on what other people aredoing,“Surround yourself with cheerleaders,” suggests Goddard-Hill.Notice how people make you feel and spend time with friends who celebrate your strengths rather than compare themselves to you.If you follow social media accounts that make you feel you ar e failing in any way, unfollow them.“Find ones that make you laugh or show you lovely places instead,” she says. Finally, focus on your own achievements and how you can improve.“The best person you can compete with is yourself,” says Goddard-Hill.5.How does a comparison trap affect us?A.It makes us focus on our own behaviour.B.It stops us from learning from each other.C.It prevents us from living happily together.D.It bases our feelings on others’ achievements.6.What’s true about “Comparing up” and “Comparing down”?A.Both of them usually enhance our confidence.B.Both of them have advantages and disadvantages.C.The former is positive while the latter is negative.D.The former makes us feel good while the latter makes us feel bad.7.What does Goddard-Hill suggest?A.Aiming to be our best.B.Trying to be the best.C.Trying to be a cheerleader.D.Valuing someone else’s achievements.8.In which section of a magazine can you find the passage?A.Achievement.B.Entertainment.C.Health.D.Politics.Ⅱ.七选五HowtosetupaLibraryofThingsInstead of Everyone knows that death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two stages 一clinical or temporary death and biological death・ Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have stopped functioning, but have not suffered permanent damage・ The organism can still be saved・ Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the "breaking up" of vital cells and tissues・ Death is then unchangeable and final.Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs- The best method developed so far involves cooling the organism, combined with narcotic (麻醉)sleep・ By slowing down the body's metabolism (新陈代谢),cooling delays the processes leading to biological death・To show how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic・ Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began taking blood out from an artery (动月永).The monkey's blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in. For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees・ At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Ketal heart became active once more・ After fifteen minutes, spontaneous (自发的)breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin (青霉素)injection, Keta seized the syringe (注身寸器)and ran with it around (he room.

Actions Speak Louder than Words[参考范文]Actions Speak Louder than WordsPeople celebrate Earth Day differently. In Picture 1,a man is trying to put up a banner on a lonely tree surrounded by stumps, but in vain, while Picture 2 shows a couple happilyplanting trees. The message conveyed here is clear:“Actions speak louder than words.” Our earth is suffering severe damage.Should we just pay lip service or take practical measures to protect it?The answer is definitely the latter.Immediate action should be taken, likestopping cutting down trees,to better the environment.Actions are important in other fields, too.Instead of shouting empty slogans,it is more meaningful to donate books and sports goods to children in need.We should strictly and voluntarily follow traffic rules, stopping at the red light rather than complaining about traffic jams.Only when we match our words with actions can we make a difference in whatever we hope to accomplish.

The burden of students has been a hot topic for years, but the load of parents has received little attention, especially from their own children.[参考范文]The__burden__of__students__has__been__a__hot__topic__for__years,__but__the__load__o f__parents__has__received__little__attention,__especially__from__their__own__children. The picture shows us a touching moment when a little girl comes to greet her working mom. Realizing her mom must be very tired after a day’s work, the girl helps to remove the bag from her shoulder. In response, the mom kneels down to show how happy and thankful she feels. All this reminds me of my mother who has been doing whatever she could to let me have the best. But, totally engaged in my own study, I seldom pay my attention to what mother needs and feels, and always think studying well is the only thing I could do in return. Now I know I can do my bit to help with the everyday washing, bedroom cleaning, or at least prepare breakfast myself, so as to share mother’s daily burden. The picture convinces me it is even more imp ortant to be a good daughter than a “good” student.

参考词汇:补脑汁tonics[参考范文]How to face the College Entrance ExaminationIn the cartoon, a Senior 3 student is reading in bed and taking some tonics, with many books beside his bed. Seeing it, I can’t help wondering whether Senior 3 students should take a lot of tonics to keep fit. I don’t think it n ecessary to do it. Taking tonics will cause us to put onweight, which is bad for our health. What’s more, the price of tonics is rather high. Then what should we do to face the College Entrance Examination? In my view, we can make progress if we take the following advice. Firstly, we should work hard, do more practice and use our mind whenever we meet with problems. Secondly, try to build up our confidence, never give up or lose heart whatever happens. We also should keep a good state of mind. Thirdly, we must create our own way of learning and seek help from both teachers and classmates. Finally, we should have enough nutrients and do more physical exercise so as to keep fit. Don’t stay up! Make efforts, and we will succeed. Bring Back A Blue Sky”为题用英语写一篇作文。
