It exists everywhere and influences everyone. There is more and more acute marketing competition today, and under this condition, the application of proper advertising language will be necessary if manufactures want to make their commodity blooming and attractive to the consumer,so this research mainly discusses the application of idioms in Chinese advertisements, and then through the analyses of some advertisements both in Chinese and English, it can be found that the methods usually used in advertisement translation are loan translation, literal translation and free translation.【Keywords】idioms Chinese advertisement translation methods1. IntroductionWith the development of Chinese economy, advertisements exert increasingly significant influence on economic development and have become an indispensable part in people’s daily life. It is known that advertisement is employed to inform, persuade, and remind the consumers of the goods, ideas and services. Chinese idioms are the most vivid, colorful part of a language. It is concise in language, easy to understand and popular. So it can be found that idioms are often employed in advertisements to achieve the effect of advertising language.2 Ways of Application of Idioms in Chinese Advertisements2.1The Variation of Idioms①烧胜一筹。

(ad for gas-fired appliance)This advertisement uses the Chinese idiom “稍胜一筹”. Its original meaning is looking better compared with other things. The replacement of “烧” with “稍”connects the function of this product. Therefore, the advertisement demonstrates that it is superior to other products on the function firing.②一“箭” 钟情。

(ad for Whrigley chewing gum)This is a Chinese advertisement of the brand “箭” for its gum,which is the use of the substantive Chinese idiom “一见钟情”. Obviously, the advertiser attempts to convey the intention that the customers will fall in love with the gum of the brand “箭” at the first taste.2.2 The Extension of Idioms⑤杏仁露露一到,众口不再难调。

(ad for Almonds Lulu)This advertisement i mitates the Chinese idiom “众口难调”. It inserts the two words “不再”. This method, on one hand, satisfies the expression of advertising theme; on the other hand, makes the two clauses form antithesis.⑥决胜于千里之外,运筹于帷幄之中。

(ad for Japan Toshiba Communication Corporation)This advertisement imitates the Chinese idiom “运筹帷幄”,it is inserted by the words “于” and “之中” so as to form antithesis with the former part of the advertisement. This advertisement is concise in language and can draw peoples’ attenti on immediately because of its extraordinary design. It also expresses the feature and charisma of this product.3. Translation Methods of Idioms in Chinese Advertisements3.1 Loan TranslationLoan translation is a way to transform the original advertisement with the help of target expressions which are usually ready-made.Example 1. Original Version: 桂林山水甲天下。

(ad for Guilin’s tourism)Translated Version: East, West,Guilin’s landscape is the best.The original text directly uses the Chinese idiomatic phrase “桂林山水甲天下”. The character “甲” means first. What the advertisement aims to express is that the landscape in Guilin is the most beautiful in the world. The advertising language is concise and vivid and easy to a rouse people’s attention and interest. It also achieves the informative function, expressive function and vocative function of advertisement. So the translated text imitates the English proverb “East or west, home is best” which is known to all westerners. When seeing the translated text of this advertisement, the western tourists can’t help comparing Guilin to home and associating that Guilin is the same as home, which is the most beautiful, wonderful and harmonious place in the world.Example 2. Original Version: 随身携带,有备无患; 随身携带,有惊无险。

(ad for Quick Heartache Reliever)Translated Version: A friend in need is a friend indeed.First,this original text applies the Chinese idiom “有备无患” which means that if you make preparations well, trouble will be avoided,and “有惊无险” means that the situation seemsserious, but it achieves the final purpose. All the two idioms are employed to stress the function of the medicine. This achieves the vocative function of advertisement. In addition, Chinese version uses repetition and antithesis, which make the structure of the advertisement neat and the sound smooth. In this way, the stress of the quality and efficiency is achieved and also achieves the expressive function and aesthetic function of advertisement. So the translated version quotes the English proverb and compares the medicine to the image of a true friend that can give timely help when heart disease patients get in trouble, which reduces the distance between the medicine and the customer.3.2 Free TranslationFree translation is an alternative approach which is used mainly to convey the meaning and spirit of the original text without trying to reproduce its form, which includes sentence pattern or figures of speech. This translation strategy is also frequently used in Chinese-English advertisement translation.Example 3. Original Version: 经历了一年的风风雨雨,极限…..不断成熟,不断完善,创造出了卓越的业绩。
