科技英语中倍数的表达与翻译技巧摘要：科技专业的文本，在翻译上力求严谨准确。
但数字翻译一直是科技翻译中的一个难点，其要求译文必须逻辑准确、数据无误。
英汉科技文本中的数字翻译大致分为四类：精确数字、分数、倍数和百分数。

就连权威人士也不例外。
对于同一句型的两个例句都有不同的翻译，导致的争议也很大。
如“A is 3 times bigger than B.”该译成“A 比 B 大三倍（A是B的四倍）”还是“A比B大两倍（A 是 B 的三倍）”。
还有很多人还对“增加”和“增加至”两个概念混淆，“increase 3 times”应译成“增加到三倍（增加两倍）”还是“增加三倍（增加到四倍）”。
以及基数到底要不要翻译呢？以及这些都是倍数翻译时争议很大的问题。
造成倍数翻译的误区究其根本原因还在于主要原因在于中西思维方式存在差异，英语和汉语的倍数表示法在概念上有不同之处，主要有两点：一是中英文倍数概念差异问题。
“A是B的四倍大”和“A比B大四倍”在中文里的含义是完全不一样的，“A是B的四倍大”意为“A是B的五倍大”。
同样，“增加到四倍”和“增加（了）四倍”在中文里的含义也是不一样的，“增加（了）四倍”即是“增加到五倍”。
中文思维模式的人们很自然地就能区别“是四倍”和“大四倍”，以及“增加了”和“增加至”这些概念。
而像这样的概念区别在英文里是不存在的。
在英文里表达倍数关系的句子，无论是表示倍数增加还是倍数减少，都只包含两层意思：A和B谁大；A是B的几倍。
比如“A is 3 times greater than B”就只表达这样两层意思：A比B大；A是B的三倍。
“大三倍”是中文的思维，而不是英文的思维，英文里不存在这样的概念。
英文倍数表达法
1. 在表示两倍时，我们常用twice或double。
例如：This year we have produced twice as much corn as we did last year. 我们今年生产的玉米是去年的两倍。
She is double my age. 她的年龄是我的两倍。
2. 在表示三倍或三倍以上的倍数时，我们常用times表示，能够译为"是......的几倍"；"比......大/高/长......几倍"等等。
①用"主语+谓语+...times + the size(或amount, length...)+ of +被比较的内容"表示。
例如：The size of your room is five times the size of mine. 你房间的面积是我房间面积的五倍。
②用"主语+谓语+...times + 形容词（副词）的比较级 + than +被比较的内容"表示。
例如：Your bag is twice bigger than mine. 你的包比我的大两倍。
③用"主语+谓语+...times + 形容词+ (n.) + as + 被比较的内容"表示。
例如：Your book is three times as thick as mine. 你的书比我的书厚三倍。
④用"主语+谓语+...times + what引导的从句"表示。
例如：Cotton output is now ten times what it was ten years ago. 当前棉花的产量是十年前的十倍。
⑤用"主语+谓语+...times + upon(或over)..."表示。
例如：The size of the sun is a million times over that of the earth. 太阳的体积比地球的体积大一百万倍。

英语倍数的正确表达方法
英语当中正确表达倍数的方法在使用英语表达"A 是B 的N 倍长（宽，高，大，重等）"，"A 比B 长（宽，高，大，重等）N 倍" 或"A 的长度（宽度，高度，大小，重量等）是 B 的N 倍"，可用下列几种句型。
1."A + be + 倍数+ as + 计量形容词原级+ as + B".This tree is three times as tall as that one. 这棵树是那棵树的三倍高。

英语中如何表达倍数
英语中如何表达倍数1. 倍数+ as + 形容词或副词的原级+ as + 其他。
这种结构又常演变成下列两类：①倍数+ as + many + 可数名词复数+ as；②倍数+ as +much + 不可数名词+ as。
如：There are seven times as many people as I expected.是我预料的人数的七倍。
There is five times as much coffee in this glass as in that one.这个杯子里的咖啡是那个杯子里的五倍。
2. 倍数+ 形容词（或副词）的比较级+ than + 其他。
如：The hall is five times bigger than our classroom. 这个大厅的面积比我们教室大五倍。
3. 倍数+ the size / height / length / width. etc. + of + 其他。
如：的六倍长。
4. 计量名词+ of + 名词+ be +倍数+ that + of + 其他。
如：The size of the newly broadened square is four times that of the previous one.新扩建的广场为以前的四倍大。
5. 倍数+what从句。
如：The production is now three times what it was ten years ago.现在的产量是十年前的三倍。
6. 倍数+ more + 名词+ than +其他。
如：There are nine times more books in his bag than in yours.他书包里的书比你书包里的书多九倍。
7. 其他表达。
如：She’s twice/ double my age. 她的年龄是我的两倍。

倍数表达法
在英语中，1倍用once ，2倍用twice ，3倍及以上用基数词+times 。
如5倍：five times 。
但在句子中要如何表达倍数呢？1.原级表示法“主语+谓语+倍数+as+原级+as ”结构。
e.g.Their room is three times as big as ours.他们的房间是我们的3倍大。
2.比较级表示法“主语+谓语+倍数+比较级+than+比较对象”结构。
e.g.He has read four times more books than I have.他读过的书比我读过的书多4倍。
3.借助名词表示法“主语+谓语+倍数+the size/amount/length …of …”结构。
e.g.The earth is 49times the size of the moon.地球的体积是月球的49倍。
注意：倍数的翻译方式通常有两种：一是“……比……（大/宽/多等）N 倍”，二是“……是……的N +1
倍（大/宽/多等）”。
e.g.This street is three times longer than that
one.这条街比那条街长3倍。

（三）There is a n-fold increase/growth… 应译为：增加n-倍（或增至n倍）。这个句型还有其它一些形式： Eg. A record high increase in value of four times was reported. 据报道,价值破记录地增长了3倍。 （四）double (增加1倍)，treble（增加2倍），quadruple（增加3 倍）。 Eg. The efficiency of the machines has been more than trebled or quadrupled． 这些机器的效率已提高了2倍或3倍多。 （五）此外，英语中还有一种用again而不用倍数词来比较倍数的方 法，如： A is as much （large，long，…）again as B.（= A is twice as much （large，long，…）as B. 应译为：A比B多（大，长，……）1倍。 A is half as much （large， 1ong，…）again as B. 【= A is one and a half times as much （large， 1ong，…）as B.】 应译为:A比B多（大，长……）一半（即A是B的一倍半）。
倍数减少
（一）A is n times as small （light，slow，…）as B. A is n times smaller （lighter， slower，…） than B. 以上两句均应译为：A的大小（重量，速度，……）是B的1/n[或A比 B小（轻，慢，……）（n-1）/n]。 Eg. The hydrogen atom is near1y l6 times as light as the oxygen atom. 氢原子的重量约为氧原子的1/16（即比氧原子约轻15/16）。 Eg. This sort of membrane is twice thinner than ordinary paper. 这种薄膜比普通纸张要薄一半（即是普通纸厚度的1/2）。 注：当相比的对象B很明显时，than/as B常被省去。

科技英语中倍数的常用表达方式及翻译英语表示倍数增减或倍数对比的句型多种多样，其中有一些句型很容易译错。
例如，1)This room is 3 times larger than that one．2）This room is 3times as large as that one．3)This room is 3 times the size of that one．这里包含有三种表示增加多少倍的句型，不能译为这个房间比那个房间大三倍，应译为这个房间是那个房间的三倍大或这个房间比那个房间大两倍? 。
之所以会出现这样的情况，是因为英文和中文两种语言的表达思维是不一样的。
只有懂得了两种思维方式的差异，才能正确地进行英语倍数的翻译J。
本文拟将常用的英语数句型及其正确译法予以归纳。
一、倍数增加的表达方法表达A是B的N倍长(宽、高、大、重等)，A比B长(宽、高、大、重等)N 倍或A的长度(宽度、高度、大小、重量等)是B的N倍，可用下列三种句型。
(一)A +be+倍数+as+计量形容词原级+ as + B例如：This bed is three times as big as that one．这张床是那张床的三倍大。
(比那张大两倍)This tree is three times as tall as that one．这棵树是那棵树的三倍高。
(比那棵高两倍)His father is twice as old as he．他父亲的年纪有他两倍大。
(比他大一倍)Asia is four times as large as Europe．亚洲的面积是欧洲的四倍。
(比欧洲大三倍)This big stone is three times as heavy as that one．这块大石头的重量是那块的三倍。
(比那块重两倍)The plane flew ten times as high as the kite．那架飞机飞行高度是那个风筝的十倍。

I. 英语倍数表达法
用英语表达"A 是B 的N 倍长（宽，高，大，重等）"，"A 比 B 长（宽，高，大，重等）N 倍" 或"A 的长度（宽度，高度，大小，重量等）是 B 的N 倍"，可用下列几种句型。
1."A + be + 倍数+ as + 计量形容词原级+ as + B".
This tree is three times as tall as that one. 这棵树是那棵树的三倍高。
His father is twice as old as he. 他父亲的年纪有他两倍大。
2."A + be + 倍数+ 计量形容词比较级+ than + B "
The Yangtze River is almost twice longer than the Pearl River.
长江差不多比珠江长两倍。
The dictionary is exactly five times more expensive than that one.
这本字典比那本恰好贵5倍。
3."A + be + 倍数+ the + 计量名词+ of + B "

I've paid five times the usual price for the stamp.
我出了5倍于往常的价格买这枚邮票。
The average income of the staff has been increased by 50 percent compared with last year. 与去年相比，该单位职工的收入增加了50%.
The price of TVs are twofold( adj. 两部分的, 双重的) down over these years.
近几年来，电视机的价格下降了两倍。
II. 英语中倍数的表达方法和译法
英语语表示倍数增减或倍数对比的句型多种多样，其中有一些（如下文中的句型②、⑤、⑥、⑧、（12）等，见圈码）很容易译错——其主要原因在于：英汉两语在表述或对比倍数方面存在着语言与思维差异。
现将常用的英语倍数句型及其正确译法归纳如下：倍数增加
(一) A is n times as great（long，much，…）as B.（①）A is n times greater （longer，more，…）than B.（②）A is n times the size （length，amount，…）of B.(③) 以上三句都应译为；A的大小（长度，数量，……）是B的n倍[或A比B大（长，多，……）n-1倍]. Eg. This book is three times as long as （three times longer than，three times the length of ）that one. 这本书的篇幅是那本书的3倍（即长两倍）。
注：当相比的对象B很明显时，than（as，of）B常被省去。
（二）increase to n times（④）increase n times／n-fold（⑤）increase by n times
（⑥）increase by a factor of n（⑦）以上四式均应译为：增加到n倍（或：增加n-1倍）。
Eg. The production of integrated circuits has been increased to three times as compared with last year. 集成电路的产量比去年增加了两倍。
Eg. The output of chemical fertilizer has been raised five times as against l986．化肥产量比1986年增加了4倍。
Eg. That can increase metabolic rates by two or three times. 那可使代谢率提高到原来的2倍或3倍（即提高1倍或2倍）。
Eg. The drain voltage has been increased by a factor of four. 漏电压增加了3借（即增加到原来的4倍）。
注：在这类句型中increase常被raise，grow，go/step up，multiply等词所替代。
（三）There is a n-fold increase/growth…（⑧）应译为：增加n-倍（或增至n倍）。
这个句型还有其它一些形式：Eg. A record high increase in value of four times was reported. 据报道,价值破记录地增长了3倍。
（四）double (增加1倍)，treble（增加2倍），quadruple（增加3倍）。
(⑨) Eg. The efficiency of the machines has been more than trebled or quadrupled．这些机器的效率已提高了2倍或3倍多。
（五）此外，英语中还有一种用again而不用倍数词来比较倍数的方法，如：A is as much （large，long，…）again as B.（= A is twice as much （large，long，…）as B.（⑩）应译为：A比B多（大，长，……）1倍。
A is half as much （large，1ong，…）again as B. 【= A is one and a half times as much （large，1ong，…）as B.】（11）应译为:A比B多（大，长……）一半（即A是B的一倍半）。
倍数减少
（一）A is n times as small （light，slow，…）as B.（12）A is n times smaller （lighter，slower，…）than B.（13）以上两句均应译为：A的大小（重量，速度，……）是B的1/n[或A比B小（轻，慢，……）（n-1）/n]。

（二）decrease n times/n--fold （14）decrease by n times（15）decrease by a factor of n（16）以上三式均译为：减少到1/n[或：减少(n-1)/n]。
decrease常被reduce，shorten，go／slow down等词替代。
Eg. Switching time of the new-type transistor is shortened 3 times. 新型晶体管的开关时间缩短了1/3（即缩短到2/3）。
Eg. When the voltage is stepped up by ten times，the strength of the current is stepped down by ten times. 电压升高9倍，电流强度便降低9/10（即90％）。
Eg. The equipment reduced the error probability by a factor of 5. 该设备误差概率降低了4/5。
（三）There is a n-fold decrease/reduction… 应译为：减至1/n [或：减少（n一1）/n]。
（17）这个句型还有其它一些形式，Eg. A rapid decrease by a factor of 7 was observed．发现迅速减少到1/7。
Eg. The principal advantage of the products is a two-fold reduction in weight. 这些产品的主要优点是重量减轻了1/2。
从上列倍
数增减句型及其译法中不难看出：与汉语不同的是，英语在表述或比较倍数时，无论使用什么句型（除了不含倍数词的again句型外）都包括基础倍数在内，因此都不是净增或净减n倍，而是净增或净减n-1倍。
所以句型⑤、③表示的倍数增量=句型④；句型(13)表示的倍数比差＝句型12，且decrease（by）3 times 应译为“减少2/3”，而不是“减少3/4”。
