I wish I had big ears like that for summer!Even though elephants are giants, they are super gentle and smart. They are really caring animals that live in close family herds. The female elephants, called cows, are very nurturing and protective of their young calves. The calves stay with their moms for many years until they are all grown up. The elephant families are led by the oldest and biggest female, called the matriarch. She decides where the herd will go to find food and water.The elephants make cute rumbling noises to communicate with each other. They can even communicate through low rumbling sounds that travel through the ground and can be heard for miles! That's like having a secret elephant language that humans can't understand. Elephants are so intelligent that they can mimic sounds, follow commands, use tools, and seem to have rituals for burying their dead. Some scientists think they may be as smart as dolphins or apes!I love how elephants use their long trunks like an arm to do all sorts of things. They can use their trunks to grab food, draw pictures, wrestle and play, drink water, greet friends, or pick up tiny objects. A elephant's trunk has around 150,000 muscles in it which makes it super strong but also allows it to be very gentle. Baby elephants have to learn how to use their trunks by watching the bigger elephants. Isn't that adorable?!Even though they're so big, elephants are vegetarians and only eat plants like grasses, leaves, bamboo, fruit and bark. An adult elephant can eat up to 300 pounds of food per day! That's the same as eating 30 hundred cheeseburgers for us humans. I guess that makes sense considering how massive they are. But it must be hard work to find enough food every single day. That'swhy herds walk up to 30 miles per day while searching for food and water.Elephants look so cute, but they can also be very dangerous if threatened. They will use their massive bodies and long trunks to charge at threats or bash them with their huge tusks made of ivory. Male elephants can have tusks up to 8 feet long that weigh 100 pounds each! Those are like giant swords coming out of their faces. I definitely wouldn't want to get hit by one of those!My favorite thing about elephants is when they take mud baths! They will use their long trunks to suck up gallons of mud and spray it all over their body. This helps them stay cool and protects their skin from sunburn and bugs. After getting totally covered in mud, they look like a big moving mud pile. Once dry, they will use branches or their trunks to scrape off the dried mud.I wish I could play in the mud like that too!It makes me really sad that some bad people hunt and kill elephants just to get their ivory tusks. There are less than 500,000 elephants left in the world now because of poachers hunting them. If we don't protect them, then one day there might not be any more elephants. That would be the worst thing ever to lose such an amazing creature! Just looking at pictures of pandas makes me happy!Pandas are really cool animals. They are bears, but they don't live in cold climates like the North Pole. Instead, pandas live in the bamboo forests of China. The forests are in warm mountain areas and bamboo is the only thing pandas eat! Pandas spend pretty much all day sitting and eating bamboo. They eat a specialtype called arrow bamboo. Sometimes they have to climb up into the trees to reach the bamboo leaves and shoots at the top.Even though pandas are bears, they don't look very scary or dangerous at all. They are very gentle and shy animals. In fact, adult pandas are usually solitary and like to be alone unless it's mating season when a male and female panda will come together to have a baby cub. The panda mom carries her cub for only about 5 months before giving birth. When baby pandas are first born, they are tiny - only about the size of a stick of butter! They are also very weak and blind when born.Baby pandas are beyond adorable. They are pink when first born with just a light white fuzz on their bodies. After a few weeks, their iconic black patches start to come in and their black and white fur grows in thick and fuzzy. Even as adults, pandas like to play, tumble, wrestle, and climb trees. They make the cutest clumsy noises like huffs, snorts, and grunts. Watching videos of pandas being silly is one of my favorite things to do.Unfortunately, pandas are an endangered species which means there are not many of them left in the wild. This is because pandas have very specific habitat needs - they require the bamboo forests to survive, and a lot of their forest homes have been destroyed by humans. Since bamboo makes up prettymuch their whole diet, if the bamboo forests go away, the pandas can't get food. The other big risk to pandas is that they have difficulty reproducing and birthing new cubs. It's estimated that there are only around 1,800 pandas still living in the wild.To try to help increase the panda population, there are many panda reserves and breeding centers throughout China that work to protect the panda habitats and help pandas safely mate and give birth to healthy cubs. Many of the cubs born at these centers are eventually released into the wild when they get older. The goal is to get the overall wild panda population up so they are no longer endangered. At the breeding centers, the pandas live in enclosures that mimic their natural bamboo forest habitats and they receive plenty of bamboo, as well as fruits, eggs, and vegetables as supplements to their diet.One of the most famous panda reserves is the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan Province, China. This facility has had great success in helping baby pandas survive and growing the panda population over the years. They currently have over 200 giant pandas living there! Many of the young adult pandas get sent out to zoos around the world as part of conservation education programs so more people can learn about them. Whenever our local zoo gets a panda on loanfrom China, my family and I go see it right away. African elephants are the biggest land mammals on the planet! They can push over trees and flatten entire bushes just by leaning their bulky weight on them.
