1986年袁隆平提出杂交水稻的育种战略，历经九年艰苦攻关，中国独创的两系法杂交水稻取得成功，又使单产比常规品种增产15％～20％。
专家预测目前正在培育的超高产品种，将比现有品种在单产上提高近一倍。
科学技术可以改善耕地条件，进而扩大某些粮食作物种植区域，还可以提高粮食生产过程中有限资源的利用率。
例如在实施塑料薄膜覆盖后，土壤一般可增温2～5℃，覆盖期内地表积温增加200～300℃，从而使作物适宜耕作区的纬度向北推移2～4°，海拔提高1000～2000m。
由于该技术可应用的作物范围广，一般增产幅度可达30％～50％。
同时，地膜覆盖能使耕层土壤含水量提高2.77％～4.55％，每亩土壤蒸发量减少100～150m3。
单位农产品的平均耗水量减少一半，就相当于灌溉面积扩大了一倍。
