潮剧是宋元南戏的一个分支，由宋元时期的南戏逐渐演化，是一个已有4 4 0多年历史的古老剧 种，主要吸收了弋阳、昆曲、梆子、皮黄等特长，结合本地民间艺术，如潮语、潮州音乐、 潮州歌册、潮绣等，最终形成自己独特的艺术形式和风格。
1： 文革时期遭受到打击和市场经济的制约 2： 2006年5月20日，潮剧经国务院批准列入第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录。 并已在广州成立“广东省潮剧发展与改革基金会”。2012年9月24日，第四 届潮剧节在汕头开幕，潮剧向联合国申报"人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录"。
自上世纪六十年代起，随着华侨与华裔迁徙的足迹，潮剧 又传播到欧洲、北美和澳洲的一些国家，成为广大潮人心 系家国、情牵故里的标识旋律。
潮剧，不仅以优美动听的唱腔音乐及独特的表演形式享誉 海内外，成为中国戏剧界的“独特景观”，更成为潮汕文 化的重要传承载体，是联络世界各地潮汕人乡情乡谊的重 要桥梁与纽带。

潮州铁枝木偶，俗称纸影戏。是 杖头木偶的一种，体形较小，其 主要特点是这种木偶靠三根铁枝 操纵表演，主竿置于偶人背部中 间，侧竿分置于左右两臂，由艺 人在幕后操纵。
同时它也是广东省木偶戏四大种 类之一，有杖头木偶、提线木偶、 铁枝木偶和布袋木偶戏。
潮剧音乐属曲牌联套体，唱南北曲，声腔曲调优美，轻俏婉转，善于抒情
伴乐部分，保留了较多唐宋以来的古乐曲，又不断吸收了潮州大锣鼓乐、庙堂音乐、 民间小调乐曲等，音乐曲调优美动听，管弦乐和打击乐配合和谐，善于表现感 情的变化。

潮剧的角色很多。明代为生、旦、贴、外、丑、末、净七行。
而且每一种还有不同类型。俗语用“四生、八旦、十六老阿兄”来形容一 个演员阵容齐全的标准。
四生：小生、老生、花（丑）生。
武生；
八旦：乌衫旦、闺门旦、彩罗衣旦、武旦、刀马旦、老旦、丑旦（女丑）
“老阿兄”是指在剧中扮演各种杂角。
