AScientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals (晶体) that could be 50, 000 years old.The organisms were found in a hot, but beautiful cave system in Naica, Mexico. These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope. Penelope Boston, who leads the Astrobiology Institute at NASA, the space agency of the United States, says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron. She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions. Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from those of their nearest relatives. The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religiouscenters built during Europe’s Middle Ages. There are crystals covering th e walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs (病菌) or other damage. Boston said the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week’s announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan, a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them. “Why are we surprised? ”Noonan asked. “ As a biologist, I would say life on Earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful. ”Boston is also studying microbes commonly found inside caves in other countries, such as Ukraine and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossible to kill. Boston said they show how difficult life on Earth can be.【文章大意】这篇文章主要讲了科学家在墨西哥发现5万岁的“超级生命”, 这些古老的微生物能够通过食用铁和锰等矿物质生存。

1. The existence of the ancient microbes relies on _________.A. surrounding insectsB. eating mineralsC. diverse plantsD. absorbing air【解析】选B。

由第二段最后一句中的says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron.

2. What can we infer about the caves in Naica from the passage?A. The temperature in the caves is quite low.B. The environment in the caves is difficult to adapt to.C. The walls are covered by crystals.D. The caves have been explored since they were formed.【解析】选B。

3. What is the biologist Norine Noonan’s attitude towards the findings?A. Neutral.B. Doubtful.C. Positive.D.

But Norine Noonan, a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them.

4. What’s the main i dea of the passage?A. Living organisms bring hope to scientific research.B. Caves provide living environment for living organisms.C. Microbes show great power to survive in terrible conditions.D. Scientists discover 50, 000-year-old “super life” in Mexico.【解析】选D。

Scientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals (晶体) that could be 50, 000 years old.

BWould you buy a car that released calming smells into the air when you are stuck in heavy traffic? Would you buy a robot that smells like a human being? Many people have seen the 3D computer-made environments of virtual (虚拟的) reality (VR). Now these virtual worlds will not just look and sound real. Researchers have created VR environments that even smell like the real things. With the new technology, users open a virtual door and step into a new environment, like a rainforest. After they enter this virtual world, special equipment releases forest-like smells into the air to make the experience seem more real.Suzanne Fisher Murray sa id, “It is a really wonderful experience that you have because you’re exploring this environment and you have smells with it. ”In the United States, Smell-O-Vision was designed to provide smells during the showing of a movie. The Smell-O-Vision system was once popular in the 1960s. Now, Emanuela Maggioni says it is close to becoming popular again. “Theconnection with emotions, memories, and . . . the sense of smell, ” Maggioni said. “It is unbelievable what we can do with technology. ”The uses for smell technology are not just limited to films and the performing arts. Researchers showed a computer program where users could imagine themselves driving a car. The system included a special smell-spraying machine. Dmitrijs Dmitrenko said, “We wan t to deliver the smell of lavender (薫衣草) every time the person drives over the speed limit. We choose lavender because it’s a very calming smell. ”Scientists are experimenting with smell instead of sounds or image-based alerts on telecommunications equipment. And businesses are already using smell to influence people’s behavior. “Not only. . . in stores. . . But on the other side, you can create and stimulate (刺激) immediate buying, ” Maggioni said. “So you’re in a library and you smell coffee and actually you are unconsciously having the need to drink a coffee. ”【文章大意】这篇文章主要讲了气味识别技术新发展引发科学家惊叹。

In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations(引文)showing how it was used. This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford.Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff's most valued contributors. But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a booklined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院)for the Criminally Insane.Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds. In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world's natural resources. How are they used? What has been lost? What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use? Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biodiversity(生物多样性)of our earth.Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment protection, Henry David Thoreau. Today, there are 28. “All of the Chinese students at Valley Forge came from wealthy families, some of them were spoiled,” said Jennifer Myers, director of marketing and communications at the school.Song's only son, Song Siyu, had a rocky start during his first six weeks at the school. The teenager said he went to the school voluntarily but did not expect it to be as difficult. Now, three months later,he has perfected the art of taking a bath in 35 seconds, finishing a meal without looking at his food, and making his bed with precision. He can even take criticism, no matter how unreasonable.“The training is hard but I know it is good for selfdevelopment of individuals,” said Song Siyu. “The endless training and scolding are just ways to build up our character, they are not personal.”But his enthusiasm is not universal. Ten of the 13 Chinese students who joined the academy this year have transferred to other schools. But for those who stick with it, there is a reward for all the hard work.21.From the second paragraph, we can know the old Chinese saying ________.A.is out of date in modern timesB.is disagreed by rich parentsC.is still worth trustingD.is deeply believed by better educated parents22.The underlined sentence means that ________ .A.Song sent his only son to military school, so he feels lonelyB.Song is the only one who sends his child to military schoolC.there are other people sending their children to military school besides SongD.the fee of the military school is so high that only Song can afford it 23.Song Siyu got some achievements in the military school EXCEPT ________.A.taking a bath in a short timeB.having his meal with his eyes closedC.taking unreasonable criticismD.improving his character24.How many Chinese students are there at Valley Forge before this year?A.10. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy. From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don't get to see this soft side of others.Often, we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we're brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that's in them.Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me. At that moment,I decided to do something I had never done in twenty-four years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed. No more angry shouts and no more horns! When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to the other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn't get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don't feel that way. But those are few and far between. More often, it would be better if we don't pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we're brave when we're scared.21.The author has discovered that people will feel happy when ________.A.they offer their helpB.they receive others' helpC.they feel others' kindnessD.they show their weakness22.The author feels sad sometimes because ________.A.he has a soft heartB.he relies much on othersC.some people pretend to be kindD.some people fail to see the kindness in others23.What did the other drivers do when they saw the flashlights?A.They speeded up to pass.B.They waited with patience.C.They tried their best to help.D.They put on their flashlights too.24.In this passage, the author advises us to ________.A.handle problems by ourselvesB.accept help from othersC.admit our weaknessD.show our bravery25.Which of the following is the best title of this passage?A.A Wheelchair Experience.B.Weakness and Kindness.C.Weakness and Strength.D.A Driving Experience.
