英语四六级练习真题

Part I: Listening Comprehension (略)

Part II: Reading Comprehension

Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to read the passages and answer the questions. For each question, there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

Passage 1

A college degree used to be the key to success in America. But after four years of steep cost hikes and a flood of graduates with loans debt, many millennials are looking for quicker and cheaper alternatives.

And they're turning to schools like The Iron Yard, a coding academy headquartered in Greenville, South Carolina. "The way that you succeed here is by learning," Peter Barth, CEO of The Iron Yard told Business Insider. "You have students that are smart and passionate and they can come in and be an asset to a company much more than someone who has spent four years on a degree."

The Iron Yard's formula is simple. It offers full-time, 12-week coding boot-camp programs in nine different cities, with courses in areas such as mobile app development and back-end engineering. There is no formal accreditation and at $13,900, it's a fraction of the cost of a four-year degree at many traditional colleges. But the program promises to be just as effective

in launching a technology career, with graduates finding jobs at companies such as Adobe, AT&T and Bank of America.

The Iron Yard is just one example of the booming "boot-camp" trend happening across the nation. According to a recent Times report, there are currently over 90 boot-camp programs available, up from just a dozen in 2012. While each program offers different areas of focus, they all claim to provide a fast and efficient alternative to traditional education.

While a college degree certainly has its merit, it no longer guarantees financial success or job security. In a competitive job market, employers are increasingly looking for specific skills and experience that can translate into real results. For many, a 12-week coding boot-camp is seen as just that.

Question 1: Why are many millennials looking for alternatives to a college degree?

A) College degrees have become more expensive.

B) More graduates are facing loan debt.

C) Quicker and cheaper options are available.

D) All of the above.

Question 2: What does The Iron Yard offer to students?

A) Full-time, 12-week coding programs.

B) Formal accreditation recognized by traditional colleges.

C) Courses in various technology fields.

D) Affordable four-year degree programs.

Question 3: What is the primary advantage of coding boot-camps over four-year degrees?

A) The cost of tuition.

B) The length of the program.

C) The specific skills and experience gained.

D) The ability to get a job at a well-known company.

Some support the view that diplomas are of vital importance because they make it easier for people to find a good job and earn higher salaries. Others, however, think diplomas are less relevant than practical experience. As far as I am concerned, diplomas do play an important role in people’s career. For one thing, a diploma is an undeniable proof of a person’s knowledge and skills, which can help demonstrate one’s qualifications to employers. Fo r another, most employers prefer candidates with diplomas as they can serve as a sign of stability. In addition, it is much easier for diploma holders to get promoted and have access to better job opportunities. Like high voltage transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it c an be used by ordinary people. The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for would be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? 英语四六级练习题详解

【04】 The Carnegie Foundation report says that many colleges have tried to be "all things to all people". In doing so, they have increasingly catered to a narrow minded careerism while failing to cultivate a global vision among their students. The current crisis, it contends, does not derive from a legitimate desire to put learning to productive ends. The problem is that in too many academic fields, the work has no context; skills, rather than being means, have become ends. Students are offered a variety of options and allowed to pick their way to a degree. In short, driven by careerism, "the nation's colleges and universities are more successful in providing credentials than in providing a quality education for their students." The report concludes that the special challenge confronting the undergraduate college is one of shaping an" integrated core" of common learning. Such a core would introduce students "to essential knowledge, to connections across the disciplines, and in the end, to application of knowledge to life beyond the campus." Although the key to a good college is a high-quality faculty, the Carnigie study found that most colleges do very little to encourage good teaching. In fact, they do much to undermine it. As one professor observed: "Teaching is important, we are told, and yet faculty know that research and publication matter most." Not surprisingly, over the last twenty years colleges and universities have failed to graduate half of their four-year degree candidates.
