Part II Reading Comprehension(45%)

Directions: In this part there are three passages followed b twenty questions each with four suggested answers. Choose the ONE that you think is the best answer. Passage i

The qualities of leadership are almost constant the world over. If you would like to become president of your class, school, or student council, you must first demonstrate that you have the potentials of leadership.

For one thing, you must show that you are interested in your school and in your fellow students. In practical terms, this means taking an active part in school activities, It means joining clubs or attend dances and other social functions, and going out for athletics ----if you are a athletic. (1)But many young people have to push themselves to join clubs or attend dances. Perhaps you are one of then. The basic reason for this hesitancy is natural shyness. There is nothing whatever wrong with shyness: it can be overcome if you recognize that it is not a permanent affliction, and if you realize, too, that most of your schoolmates are probably as shy as you are..

If you consciously strive to overcome shyness by going out to meet people, you will find yourself at the same time developing another quality of leadership ___ understanding. As your circle of friends and contacts widens you will get to know your schoolmates better. Because you are no longer so concerned with your own feelings, you will begin to respect and take into account the feelings of others. Your friends and acquaintances will be aware of your new attitude, for it will show in many small ways ------your greetings conversation, and willingness to give and accept friendship.

Another quality of leadership which you can develop is willingness to do a bit extra. If you are expected to sell ten tickets to a dance, for example, and sell fifteen, you have proved your interest and your effort to make your organizations successful. Once you acquire the reputation of always doing a little more than expected your fellow students will be willing to trust you with greater responsibilities. All your extra effort also indicates enthusiasm, and show that you concentrate more on how to do a job efficiently than on its difficulties.

A fourth quality of leadership is imagination ----the ability to see a way through problems and to develop new ideas. You can develop this all-important quality by devoting extra thought during quiet monuments to problems being faced by your organization. Many

members of a club sit passively through a meeting .and give no more thought to club matters until the next meeting. But if you take time during the week to think over the last meeting, you are likely to come up with new ideas (or at least some questions) to contribute at the next meeting.

As you show that you are interested in your school or organization, that you have understanding and respect to your schoolmates, and that your will work harder and use your imaginations, your schoolmates will naturally think of you as one of their leader. (2)When the time comes for election of class or student friends, and this word will reach other groups until you are given a chance to declare yourself a candidate with out seeming immodest.

21.This article A. discusses how a person can develop qualities of leadership.

B. indicates various ways a good leader can make friends and influence people.

C. analyzes the responsibilities of leaderships

D. explains why many people are not good leaders.

22. The author feels that a prospective leader should attend school dances to A. prove that he is the best dancer in the school. B. show his interest in school activities

Passage II

Those who distrust pills will take satisfaction in recent news from America’s National Institute of Health. On January 18th the NIH announced the results of two studies of the effects of taking vitamin A and beta-carotene ( which the body turns into vitamin A) pills, both widely believed to protect people against lung cancer. For poll takers, the news was bad.

In neither study did the pills live up to people ’s expectations. In the mixed-sex testing, in fact, those who were given dummy pills that looked like the vitamin pills got on rather better___ developing 28% fewer lung cancers -----than those who took the real thing. Besides that, the death rate of the real vitamin takers was 17% higher from all causes and 26% higher from heart and blood-vessel disease than that of the control group. The testing among the male doctors, who are generally a healthier group, showed no strong influence either way from taking vitamins pills.

Taken together, the two studies suggest that non-smokers have nothing to gain from adding vitamin A or beta-carotene pills to their diets. For smokers and people at high risk for other reasons their use may be dangerous. Much the same conclusion emerged from an earlier study published in 1994, of nearly 30.000 male smokers in Finland. There, the men who took beta-carotene pills daily for between five and eight years developed 18% more lung cancers

and had a death rate 8 higher than the controls.

With all this bad news, the cautions might be tempted to keep away from peaches, pumpkins, carrots and other natural sources of beta-carotene, as well as from pills. But they should not do so, in the opinion of Richard Klausner, director of the NIH ’s National Cancer Institute.

(2)Population studies, he noted, have linked high dietary intake of beta-carotene in vegetables and fruit to a reduced risk of cancer, and in particular lung cancer, (3)That, after all, is what got people excited about the stuff in the first place. But food rich in beta-carotene would seem to have adenoma;. As-yet-characteristic of cancer, The absence of these extra elements is likely to explain the failure of the beta-carotene and vitamin A pills to provide the same protection .

28. The results of the two studies of the effects of taking vitamin A and beta-carotene pills will

probably satisfy those. A. who take them regularly. B. who have lung cancer C. who do not smoke

D. who do not believe in their power.

29. It can be learned from the first paragraph that many people believe taking vitamin A and beta-carotene pills. A. who take them regularly B. who have lung cancer C. who do not smoke

D. who do not believe in their power

30. It can be learned from the first paragraph that many people believe taking vitamin A and beta-carotene pills.

A. contributes greatly to people ’s physical well-being

B. protects people from heat and blood-vessel diseases

C. reduces the risk of lung cancer.

D. reduces the risk of lung cancer but increases the risk of heart and blood vessel diseases. 31. The two studies have shown that vitamin A and beta-carotene pills A. did not fulfill people ’s expectations B. produced the desired results C. prolonged patient s ‘life D. made people healthier.

东华大学20__-20__学年第__学期期末试题 踏实学习,弘扬正气;诚信做人,诚实考试;作弊可耻,后果自负 College English Achievement Test Band 3(易班) Part I Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (10%) Directions: In this part, there is a passage followed by ten statements. You will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and decide whether each of the statements is true or false, or that the information is not given in the passage. Then mark the answer on the Answer Sheet. Renewable Energy How does energy use affect the environment? All forms of electricity generation have some level of environmental impact. However, clean energy technologies, including renewable energy and combined heat and power, have fewer impacts than other sources of electricity generation. To learn about the environmental impacts of electricity generation technologies, click on an energy source below. How clean is the electricity I use? In the United States, electricity is generated in many different ways, with a wide variation in environmental impact. Traditional methods of electricity production contribute to air quality problems and the risk of global climate change. With the advent of electric customer choice, many electricity customers can now choose the source of their electricity. In fact, you might now have the option of choosing cleaner, more environmentally friendly sources of energy. How can I make a difference? The energy decisions we make every day can encourage the development of new power sources, save natural resources, and help ensure that the quality of our environment is preserved. In many parts of the country, consumers now have the opportunity to choose the source of the power that is delivered to their home or business—including energy derived from renewable sources. "Renewable energy" generally refers to electricity supplied from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power (energy supplied by the sun), geothermal (energy created from the extreme heat contained in liquid rock—called magma(岩浆)—within the Earth's core), hydropower (energy derived from the movement of water as it flows downstream), and various forms of biomass (fuel from sources such as trees, wood and agricultural wastes and fuel crops). These energy sources are considered renewable because they are continuously replenished on the Earth. In addition, mobile sources of air pollution—such as cars, trucks, trains and lawnmowers—also contribute to air pollution nationwide and are an important source of air pollution in many urban areas. Hydrogen Energy Using hydrogen energy could help address many concerns facing our nation and our world. We believe hydrogen can contribute to resolving these issues for these reasons:
