Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things learn to do without being taught—to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bike—compare(比较) their own performance with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to

find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher.

Let him do it himself.

Newspapers in Great Britain vary greatly in their ways of carrying the news. There are serious papers for those who want to know about important happenings everywhere, both at home and abroad. There are popular newspapers for those who prefer entertainment(娱乐) to information.

The London newspaper that is best known outside Great Britain is probably THE TIMES. It began in 1785, and has a high reputation(名声) for believable news and serious opinions on the news. It calls itself an independent paper, which means that it does not give its support to any particular political party. Its leading articles give the opinions of the editors, not those of the owners of the paper.

Letters to the editor are printed in parts of the newspaper. These parts of THE TIMES are always interesting.
