There,re five people at our table, including myself. Fve already learnt a great deal about them in the short time we've been at sea, although we rarely meet except at meal times.

First of all, there9s Dr Stone. He's a man of about sixty five, with gray hair and a friendly face. The people who lived in Italy and northern Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were the first people to think of themselves as belonging to an era(时代)? It was the Renaissance (文艺复兴),a period of renewed interest in learning after the Middle Ages.

The motto(座右铭)of the Renaissance was “A man can do all things if he wills,” and the man who fulfilled that motto more than any other was Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci was good at portraiture, a new art form that described people as individuals. His painting of the “Mona Lisa” remains the most famous portrait ever done?

But Leonardo was also a skilled architect and engineer, who designed a submarine, helicopter and airplane, long before those inventions were ever built. Hundreds of drawings and thousands of pages in his notebooks proved his interest in astronomy, anatomy, botany, geology, and above all mathematics. He was interested in city planning and sanitation and was reportedly a gifted musician.

Since the Renaissance, the term “Renaissance man M has been applied to(适用至!J)othc「s, who, like Leonardo da Vinci, excelled in many various fields. Thomas Jeflerson is perhaps the best example. It was a dark November day in 1895. In a laboratory at the royal University of Wurzburg, in western Germany, a 50?year-old physics professor, Wilhelm Roentgen, performed what looked like a type of magic. He placed a glass vacuum(真空)tube inside a black cardboard box and applied a high-voltage current (高压电流)?He suddenly noticed that, on a bench nearby, a piece of paper coated with a chemical substance began giving off an strange light. Over the following two weeks, Roentgen performed a series of experiments that proved the existence of a form of electro-magnetic (电磁0勺)radiation he called X-rays.

His astonishing discovery has led to a deeper understanding of the physical world——in particular, to the field of medical diagnosis(诊断).

X-rays are widely used in medicine to make radiographs or X-rays pictures of the bones and internal organs of the body to see whether diseases exist, such as broken bones or lung diseases.

A radiograph is made by passing an X-rays beam through a patient's body onto a piece of photographic film. The bones takes in more of the rays than do muscles or other organs, so the bones Ihrow the sharpest shadows on the film?

Improvements over the past century——from fluoroscopy(荧光透视法)to CT scans— have made X-rays technology an invaluable tool of medicine.

Francis Bacon, one of the most important philosophers (哲学家)of England, was bom in London and educated at Cambridge University- When he was only 15, he went to France to work for the English ambassador(大使).Two years later he went to England to study law. At the age of twenty—hree he was chosen to parliament (议会). His ideas about how scientists should study things in nature helped to bring the modern way of thinking, called the scientific method.

One of the Bacon best—known books was his Essays. Each essay was a short piece of writing in which he tried to give a lesson by discussing sides of a subject such as studying, conversation, friends and healthful living. In many of his books, Bacon explained how scientists should study things as they really exist in nature and then try to figure out what caused a particular thing to be as it is. Later, by doing experiments, the scientists could see that any one cause would always have the same result. This method, which is called inductive reasoning, is used by all the scientists today, but it was new in Bacon's time.

If you are ever lucky to be invited to a formal dinner party in Paris, remember that the French have their own way of doing things, and that even your finest manners may not be u correct n by French custom? For example, if you think showing up promptly(迅速地)at the time given on the invitation, amied with gifts of wine and roses, complimenting (称赞)your hostess on her cooking, laughing heartily at the host's jokes and then leaping up to help the hostess will make you the perfect guest,

think again.

Here Madame Nora Chabal, the marketing director of the Ritz Hotel in Paris, explained how it works. The first duty of the guest is to respond lo the invitation within 48 hours. And, the guest may not ask to bring a guest because the hostess has chosen her own.

Flowers sent ahead of shedule are the preferred gift. They may also be sent afterwards with a thank—you note. It is considered a very bad form to arrive with a gift of flowers vase when she is too busy to do with that.

See, that^s the logic 1 The type of flowers sent has a code of its own, too. One must never send chrysanthemums(菊花)because they are considered too humble(谦卑)for occasion. CarnationsC 康乃馨)are considered bad luck, and calla(马蹄莲)are too reminiscent (令人联想)of funerals (葬礼)? A bouquet of red roses is a declaration of romantic intent. Don" send those unless you mean it, and never to a maixied hostess. And though the French love wine, you must never bring a bottle to a dinner party- Why? It's as if you feared your hosts would not have enough wine on hand, and that^s an insult (侮辱). You may, however, offer a box of chocolates which the hostess will pass after dinner with coffee-

If an invitation is for eight o'clock, the considerate guest amves at 8:15 ? Guests who arrive exactly on time or early are mere thoughtless ones who are not giving the hostess those last few minutes she needs to deal with details and crises. The u correct n guest airives between 15 to 20 minutes after the hour because dinner will be served exactly 30 minutes past the time of the invitation.

They wear the latest fashions with the most up-to-date accessories(酉己饰).Yet these are girls in their tee ns or twe nties but wome n in their sixties and seventies. A generation which would once only wear old-fashioned clothes is now favouring the same high street looks worn by those half their age.

Professor Julia Twigg, a social policy expert , said /Women over 75 are now shopping for clothes more frequently than they did when they were young in the 1960s」n the 1960s buying a coat for a woman was a serious matter ? It was an expensive item that they would purchase only every three or four years — now you can pick one up at the supermarket whenever you wish to ?Fashion is a lot cheaper and people get tired of things more quickly?"

Professor Twigg analysed family expending (支出)data and found that while the percentage of spending on clothes and shoes by women had stayed around the same—a nd 5 or 6 per cent of spe ndin g—the amount of clothes bought had rise n sharply.

It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers (生产商)follow certain uniform standards for various features (特彳iF) of clothes. What seems strange , however, is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for men. Take a look at the way your clothes butt on. Men's clothes tend to butt on from the right, and women's form the left. Considering most of the word's population-men and women-are right-handed, the men's standard would appear to make more sense for wome n. So why do wome n's clothes butt on from the left?

History really seems to matter here. Butt on first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the 17th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly right-ha nded serva nts, havi ng women's shirts butt on from the left would be easier. On the other hang, having men's shirts button form the right made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hang would be less likely to get caught in the shirt.

Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning form the left is still the standard for them. Is it interesting? Actually, a standard, once set, resists change. At a time when all women's shirts buttoned form the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacture to offer womer/s shirts that buttoned the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. Besides from the right, since any one who noticed that would believe they were wearing mer/s shirts.
