Albert Ei nstei n had a great effect on scie nee and history. An America n uni versity preside nt once said that Ein stei n had made a new outlook, a new view of the uni verse. Each year millions of babies are born too soon and too small. Premature or preterm births are defi ned as births at less tha n thirty-seve n weeks.

Prematurity is the leading cause of death in newborn babies. More than one-fourth of the four million newborns who die each year around the world were born too early.

Preterm babies that survive can suffer a lifetime of serious health conditions. The examples in clude cerebral palsy, bli ndn ess, heari ng problems and lear ning disabilities. Families and communities face emotional, physical and financial costs.

Christopher Hows on is the vice preside nt for global programs at the March of Dimes, a non profit

group. His group and the World Health Orga ni zati on rece ntly published a report called “ The Global and Regi onal Toll of Preterm Birth.

CHRISTOPHER HOWSON: “Fra nkly the crisis of preterm birth is
