ADespite growing up in Croydon and Liverpool, neither Grace nor Paul felt at home in the city. After meeting at Staffordshire's Keele University, they fell in love with Skye on a geology field trip in 1979.“The island is only 50 miles north to south, but the variety of terrain(地形) and wildlife is impressive,” says Paul.Grace adds,“We both loved Gavin Maxwell's Ring of Bright Water and were really passionate about otters(水獭).It was our dream to get away from the rat race, get married and run wildlife holidays and courses on Skye.”Five years and 29 loan applications later, they moved to Skye. They were relieved to say goodbye to crowds and traffic and found that the island (population: about 20,000) attracts like-minded people.“A lot of musicians and craftspeople move here, looking for peace,” says Grace. After locals started bringing them injured animals, they built a wildlife hospital and have since cared for 170 otters.Paul has gained a PhD in otter ecology and they've set up the International Otter Survival Fund (),which supports conservation projects worldwide.Their three kids had carefree childhoods in a tightknot community.“We could give them lots of freedom because people watch out for each other's children here,” Grace explains. She continues,“We go to Inverness (a town in northern Scotland)about once a year for a concert, but otherwise everything we want is here. You have to be mentally and practically selfsufficient. We built a metal shed (小屋),but that took off in the 90 mph winds. Anything not built solidly will leave. It's often very dark and wet from November to March, which can be quite depressing. If there's wind and rain at the same time,no amount of waterproof clothing will keep you dry. But we make up for it in the summer. With the long days, there's nowhere better.”Paul concludes,“There's something so special about living here and having a sense of belonging.”21.What can we learn about Paul and Grace?A.They grew up in the countryside.B.They have difficulty getting along with others.C.They hold different opinions as to where to live.D.They're determined and environmentally aware.22.What's life on Skye like in Grace's eyes?A.It's lonely.B.It's quite busy.C.It can be hard sometimes.D.It may be boring for young people.23.What's the best title for the text?A.A remote islandB.An ottersaving projectC.Getting away from it allD.Feeling at home in the city?B“Deextinction”, the idea that extinct (绝种的) animals can be brought back through cloning or genetic (基因的) engineering, has attracted the interest of a small group of scientists. The topic hasmade the cover of National Geographic Magazine. Supporters say they are doing it for moral reasons and because we “miss” the extinct animals. They blame human exploitation (such as trapping, hunting, habitat destruction ) of the extinct animals, but their plans, though they sound exciting, are exploitation in another form.Considering the imperfect science of cloning, deextinction would cause animals suffering. Most animals born of such experiments would suffer serious diseases, dying soon after birth or having a shortened lifetime. Spanish and French scientists worked for years to bring the Pyrenean ibex, a species of wild goat, back from extinction by cloning. In 2009, they succeeded only in producing a sick baby goat that died 10 minutes after birth. For these animals to be born, other animals would live in captivity, in a lab or elsewhere, and serve as mother substitutes (代用品),routinely having operations as part of the cloning process. For example, elephants would be kept in captivity to carry woolly mammoth (猛犸) babies for nearly two years. Such experiments often lead to other animals' unhappiness as well.If extinct animals are successfully brought back, where would they go? Their original habitats have developed and changed without them. They are unlikely to survive in the natural environment, but, if they do manage to survive, they will affect their environment in unpredictable ways, presenting a new threat to the ecological system. If the animals born through deextinction are stuck in zoos and museums instead, what good is that? It is exploitation, not a solution. It would be better to apply creative thinking about protection to the reallife problems of today's world. Deextinction takes attention away from the difficult situation of endangered animals. Discussions about woolly mammoth cloning do nothing to stop the illegal killings of endangered wild African elephants. Money would be better used toprevent human conflict with wildlife and their ecosystems.Let's keep deextinction in the world of science fiction, learn from our failed past, and protect wild animals and their habitats for the future.24.The underlined word “it”in Paragraph 1 refers to “”.A.deextinctionB.cloning or genetic engineeringC.exploitationD.National Geographic Magazine25.In Paragraph 2, examples are given to show that .A.modern elephants are related to woolly mammothB.scientists should improve the cloning processC.deextinction does harm to some animalsD.it's possible to bring back extinct animals26.What might happen if extinct animals come back to the wild?A.The problem of extinction will be solved.B.They will live in their original habitats.C.The balance of nature may be disturbed.D.More endangered animals will be saved.27.According to Paragraph 4, deextinction may .A.prevent the illegal killings of African elephantsB.make people care less about endangered animalsC.prevent the conflict between humans and animalsD.raise public awareness of protecting animalsCDear Alcohol,You've been around forever. I can remember all the pain you've caused me.Do you remember the night when you almost took my father's life?I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. He's addicted to you and to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went turning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasn't the only one badly hurt by you that night.Do you remember the night of my first high school party? My friends were intrigued by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could.I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen head over heels for you. “I'm so embarrassed,”they said as I held their hair back so that they could throw up. “I'm sorry,” they said when I called taxis for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. “This won't happen again,” they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15-yearold girls slept in hospital beds that night due to you.Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car headon and killed two people in the other car? He died the next morning too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn't realize her brother was among them at all. She never saw him again. And it was all your fault.I wish you'd walk out of my life forever. I don't want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain you've caused. Sure, you've made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you've caused in the lives of millions is not excusable. Stop attracting the people I love! Stop hurting me, please.Sincerely,Me 28.What did Alcohol do to the author's father that night?A.It made him drunken and took his life away.B.It made him kill two other people when driving.C.It got him into a car accident and badly injured.D.It got him into trouble and got his stomach pumped.29.What does the underlined phrase “were intrigued by”probably mean in the letter?A.Were interested in. B.Were satisfied with.C.Were familiar with. D.Were disappointed by.30.What is the author's purpose in writing this letter?A.To warn people not to drive after drinking.B.To persuade people to get away from alcohol.C.To tell people three sad stories about alcohol.D.To warn people against the pain caused by alcohol.31.How was the author feeling while writing his letter?A.Shocked. B.Responsible.C.Disappointed. D.Sorrowful.DTwo of the hardest things to accomplish in this world are to acquire wealth by honest effort and, having gained it, to learn how to use it properly. Recently I walked into the locker room of a rather wellknown golf club after finishing a round. It was in the late afternoon and most of the members had left for their homes. But a halfdozen or so men past middle age were still seated at tables talking aimlessly and drinking more than was good for them. These same men can be found there day after day, and, strangelyenough, each one of these men had been a man of affairs and wealth, successful in business and respected in the community. If material prosperity were the chief necessity for happiness, then each one should have been happy. Yet, it seemed to me, something very important was missing, or else there would not have been the constant effort to escape the realities of life through Scotch and soda. They knew, each one of them, that their productivity had ceased (停止). When a fruit tree ceases to bear its fruit, it is dying. And it is even so with man. What is the answer to a long and happy existence in this world of ours? I think I found it long ago in a passage from the book of Genesis which caught my eye while I was looking through my Bible. The words were few, but they became memorably impressed in my mind:“In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread.”To me, that has been a challenge from my earliest recollections (memories). In fact, the battle of life, of existence, is a challenge to everyone. The immortal words of St. Paul, too, have been and always will be a great inspiration to me. At the end of the road I want to be able to feel that I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.32.Which of the following is indicated in the first paragraph?A.Wealth results from honest effort.B.The men seated at tables in the locker room are lost in the significance of life.C.For some people,no way can be found to escape the realities of life other than Scotch and soda.D.The men acquire wealth by planting fruit trees.33.The underlined sentence “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread” means “”.A.Bread tastes delicious when sweat pours off your faceB.No pain,no gainC.Failure is the mother of successD.Bread comes from the sweat on your face34.We learn from the passage that the author .A.was a wealthy person in the communityB.held a positive attitude towards an active lifeC.was fond of associating with celebrities (名人)D.kept a secret of the reason why he was so impressed35.What is implied in the passage by the writer?A.To use wealth properly, eat, drink and be merry.B.Where there is a will, there is a way.C.As life is but like a dream,a man is like a fruit tree.D.If you cease to struggle, you cease to live.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Unit 4 Global warming教学目标1) Learn some knowledge about the greenhouse effect and global warming.2) Know the contents of the text well by talking about this topic and reading.3) Discuss the problem of global warming and express your own opinions学情分析There are two meanings of the term "greenhouse effect". There is a "natural" greenhouse effect that keeps the Earth's climate warm and habitable(suitable for people to live in). Without it, scientists estimate that the average temperature on Earth would be colder by about 30 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit), far too cold to sustain(维持) our current ecosystem. In other words, the normal greenhouse effect is a natural process which is to some degree beneficial to us.重点难点Master the main idea of the first five paragraphs by talking about the topic.教学过程活动1 【讲授】Unit 4Teaching procedures:Step I. GreetingsGreet the whole class as usual.Step II. Lead-inLead to the topic by showing an article to the students and let students know about two types of greenhouse effect ("natural" greenhouse effect and “man-made” greenhouse effect) and their exact meanings.Step III. Analyze two graphs to learn the main idea of the first five paragraphs. From the first graph, we can see that during the 20th century the temperature of the earth rose about one degree Fahrenheit. All scientists agree with the view that the increase in the earth’s temperature is due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil to produce energy.More such burning means more carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere. We can see clearly that the levels of carbon dioxide have increased greatly over the past decades.Higher levels of carbon dioxide means sharper increase of the temperature. The phenomenon is called global warming. There has been a debate towards global warming over the pastyears. Opinions about it vary from person to person.Step IV. Read the whole passage to review the main idea of the first five paragraphs and know the two different opinions. Dr. FosterCarbon dioxide has caused the global temperature to ________. An increase of five degrees would be a ____________ and could be very ________.Possible results: __________________(海平面上升)___________________(洪灾)___________________(恶劣的风暴)___________________(干旱)__________________(饥荒)__________________(疾病的传播)___________________________(物种的消失)George Hambley:Any warming will be ______ with few bad ______________________. More carbon dioxide is a _________ thing, which makes crops __________ more and will encourage _____________________.Step V. Discuss the statement: We should take immediate action about global warming.Requirement: Write down your reasons and possible measures on your learning sheetStep VI. Presentation.Ask some students to read their reasons and possible reasons loudly to the whole class.Step VII. Assignment.Make up a complete composition in groups. The passage should include your point of view, your reasons and your measures.精美句子1、善思则能“从无字句处读书”。

Examples of the types of US research that will be performed aboard the station include:More pure protein crystals may be grown in space than on Earth. Similar experiments have already been conducted on the Space Shuttle. This type of research could lead to the study of possible treatments for cancer, immune system disorders and other diseases.Living cells can be grown in a laboratory environment in space where they are not affected by gravity(引力).Growing cultures for long periods aboard the station will further advance this research. Such cultures can be used to test new treatments for cancer without risking harm to patients. The effects of long term exposure to reduced gravity on humans will be studied aboard the station. Studies of these effects may lead to a better understanding of the body systems and similar illnesses on Earth and may provide information useful for future space travels.Fluids(液体),flames, metal and other materials will be the subject of basic research on the station. Scientists plan to study this field to create more perfect materials for applications. The study of all of these areas may lead to developments that can develop many industries on Earth. Some experiments aboard the station will take place on the outside of the station. Such outer space experiments can study the space environment and how long-term exposure to space affects materials. This research can help better understand the nature of space, improve spacecraft design and help explain how the universe developed.Observations of the Earth from space help the study of large scale, long term changes in the environment of the earth. Studies in this field can increase understanding of the forests, oceans and mountains. The effects of volcanoes, hurricanes and typhoons can be studied. In addition, changes to the Earth that are caused by the human race can be observed. As part of the Commercialization of space research on the station, industries will participate in research by conducting experiments and studies aimed at developing new products and services. The results may benefit those on Earth not only by providing new products as a result, but also by creating new jobs to make the products.Title:__1__ on the International Space Station答案 1.
