Many of the activities were already full, but I made a decision to join the Cooking Club because at least that way I would get a snack to eat.Tuesday, April 7It was the first time to be here. Like many of my ideas, joining the Cooking Club made sense at first but was turning out to be a disaster. Most people have been in the club for more than a year, so they already know what they’re doing. And since they all know each other, they weren’t exactly interested in a newcomer.Thursday, April 9What a terrible day! How could I know that if a recipe says to beat cookie batter (糊), you couldn’t do it with your fists (拳头)? I thought the other kids would never stop laughing. And it was not easy to get cookie batter off your clothes. Friday, April 10I have more funny things in Cooking Club. Now I know that chocolate mousse is a dessert and it isn’t spelled m-o-o-s-e. “Mousse” and “Moose” (驼鹿) sound exactly the same. How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and m obile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one? Most people just throw them away. With the development of electric industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 6.5 million tons. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons. It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful(有害的), depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine(城市矿藏). Her phone showed that during the night, Priedeman had read a text message from her friend. She did it while she was fast asleep.Reading and sending text messages while asleep—called “sleep texting”—is an unusual sleep behaviour, similar to sleepwalking. It’s also a growing concern(关心的事) among doctors: young people can’t live without their cell phones. One in three teenagers sends more than 100 text messages a day, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. And at least four out of five teenagers said they sleep with their phone on or near their bed.Elizabeth Dowdell, a professor at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, has studied sleeping texting. She said that having a phone nearby all night is a big part of the problem.Andrew Stiehm, a sleep medicine expert with Allina Health in Minnesota, agrees. It’s possible for the part of the brain that controls motor skills (动作技能) to wake up, while the part of the brain that controls memory and judgment(判断) may be still asleep. That’s why some people can perform basic movements ---such as walking, talking, texting or even driving—while they’re sleeping. Some of Dowdell’s students said that they’re disturbed by their nightt ime texting behavior. But because sleep texting is unconscious, it’s a difficult habit to break. Dowdell said she knows of some students who wear socks on their hands to keep themselves from texting.Marjorie Hogan, a doctor at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, suggests keeping all electronic devices(电子设备) outside the bedroom at certain times.1.What happened to Olivia Priedeman?A.She sleepwalked to a friend’s house.B.She dreamed of making plans with a friend.C.She phoned one of her friends during the night.D.She read a text message from her friend while asleep.2..
