Farewell Address of the Wei Emperor (English Version)Emperor Cao Pi of Wei emerged victorious in the Three Kingdoms period, as he led his kingdom to supremacy. At the beginning of his reign, he proclaimed his objective of establishing a dynasty, to succeed the Han dynasty. After achieving several successes, he accomplished his aim and founded the Wei dynasty with himself as the first emperor. However, during his later years, he experienced illness, causing him to reflect on his actions and his legacy. In this Farewell Address, he expresses his remorse for his mistakes, gratitude to those who have served him, and encouragement to his successor, to continue his legacy and lead their nation to prosperity.Emperor Cao Pi began his address by acknowledging the contributions of his ministers, generals, and officials. He expressed his thanks to his loyal servants, their family members, and his consorts for their support throughout his rule. He lamented his shortcomings and mistakes, especially the lives that were lost in war and unrest, for which he took responsibility, as a ruler. The emperor then proceeded to commend his son and heir apparent, Cao Rui, with whom he entrusted the empire. Emperor Cao Pi expressed his faith in his successor's abilities, experience, and diligence. He advised him to keep the state apparatus intact, cultivate loyalty and trustworthiness among his subordinates, and to deal with events and matters widely important, dispassionately and prudently. To ensure stability, Cao Pi counseled Cao Rui to promote the best people for high office, regardless of their background or status, and to refrain from favoritism or nepotism. The Emperor proceeded to offer several examples of his successes, particularly in the area of culture and governance. He highlighted the creation of the Nine-rank system, in which officials were appointed and promoted based on merit, their abilities, and experience rather than their social background or birth rank. This was one of Emperor Cao Pi's innovations, which helped stabilize the bureaucracy of Wei and promote social order within the dynasty.Cao Pi also boasted of his writing abilities and argued that it was essential for a ruler to possess a well-versed education. He demonstrated this through the creation of several essays, poems, and speeches which he compiled and presented in an anthology entitled The Twenty-Four Histories. This work was the first of its kind in China's history and established literature and language as critical parts of Chinese culture. The Emperor continued with his address by recognizing the role his father and founder of the Wei dynasty, Cao Cao, played in his reign. He paid tribute to his father's achievements, particularly his military accomplishments which enabled his dynasty's success. In his farewell address, Cao Pi acknowledged his debt of gratitude to his father and expressed his determination to continue and honor his legacy. Finally, the Emperor concluded his Farewell Address, expressing his hopes and desires for his dynasty's longevity and stability. He urged his successor to continue his predecessors' efforts and maintain the peace and prosperity of the Wei dynasty. He expressed his desire to see a new era of prosperity and success under the leadership of Cao Rui.In conclusion, the Farewell Address of the Wei Emperor, Cao Pi, served as an opportunity for him to reflect on his reign and achievements, confesshis shortcomings and remind his successor of his responsibilities as a ruler. It was a testament to his commitment to the prosperity of Wei and demonstrated his dedication to continuing his legacy.。

Permit me to observe: the late emperor was taken from us before he could finish his life's work, the restoration of the Han. Today, the empire is still divided in three, and our very survival is threatened.

Yet still the officials at court and the soldiers throughout the realm remain loyal to you, your majesty. Because they remember the late emperor, all of them, and they wish to repay his kindness in service to you.

This is the moment to extend your divine influence, to honor the memory of the late Emperor and strengthen the morale of your officers. It is not the time to listen to bad advice, or close your ears to the suggestions of loyal men.

The emperors of the Western Han chose their courtiers wisely, and their dynasty flourished. The emperors of the Eastern Han chose poorly, and they doomed the empire to ruin.

Whenever the late Emperor discussed this problem with me, he lamented the failings of Emperors Huan and Ling.

I began as a common man, farming in my fields in Nanyang, doing what I could to survive in an age of chaos. I never had any interest in making a name for myself as a noble.

The late Emperor was not ashamed to visit my cottage and seek my advice. Grateful for his regard, I responded to his appeal and threw myself into his service.

The late Emperor always appreciated my caution and, in his final days, entrusted me with his cause.

Since that moment, I have been tormented day and night by the fear that I might let him down. That is why I crossed the Lu river at the height of summer, and entered the wastelands beyond.

Now the south has been subdued, and our forces are fully armed. I should lead our soldiers to conquer the northern heartland and attempt to remove the hateful traitors, restore the house of Han, and return it to the former capital.

This is the way I mean to honor my debt to the late Emperor and fulfill my duty to you.

My only desire is to be permitted to drive out the traitors and restore the Han. If I should let you down, punish my offense and report it to the spirit of the late Emperor.

Your Majesty, consider your course of action carefully. Seek out goodadvice, and never forget the late words of the late Emperor. I depart now on along expedition, and I will be forever grateful if you heed my advice. Blindedby my own tears, I know not what I write.。
