必修5 Unit 4 Making the news (限时35分钟) Ⅰ. A There is always something that happens in the world that everyone fears will happen to their town, city or country: natural disasters. The scariest part of it is that no one will ever see it coming. Though technology helps us prepare, but it never actually tells the people when it’s going to hit. It is always estimated but the result is never 100% accurate. However, that is not the point of this article. Two different natural disasters in two different parts of the world have happened in the past few weeks. One was a major flood that has hit Louisiana in the United States. The other was an earthquake that hit Amatrice, Italy. However, there is a major difference in the news coverage of the two tragedies. As for the flooding in Louisiana, it is reported that this disaster is the worst to hit the United States since Super-storm Sandy and it’ll cost at least $30 million. In only the first couple of weeks, 13 people had died. However, like me, many people did not hear about this tragic event. I did not learn about it until about three weeks after it happened. - 2 -
In Italy, however, it covered all media instantly. The earthquake in Italy happened on Tuesday morning. That same day, I was on Twitter and that was all that was over the news feed. Every other post was about the earthquake. Some would have the opinion that Amatrice, Italy was one of the most beautiful towns in that country. I got in deep sorrow because there were more people killed in this quake than the flooding. So far, they have a total of 73 dead and over one hundred missing. I understand that technically the earthquake in Italy was worse than the floods in Louisiana. However, I believe that if a natural disaster happens, they all should be equally covered and taken equally seriously. We are one world united and should be there for all of the people who are in need of help. We may not be able to accurately predict disasters, but we can surely lend a hand out for the needy. 1. What can be inferred from the passage? A. Italy isn’t good at predicting the natural disasters. B. All natural disasters should be covered equally. C. The world should be united into one instantly. D. America should help Italy predict natural disasters. 根据文中最后一段“I understand that technically the earthquake in Italy was. . . they all should be equally covered and taken equally seriously. ”可知, 所有的自然灾害都需要平等地报道。故选B。 4. How is the text mainly developed? A. By making a comparison. B. By following the time order. C. By listing some examples. D. By analyzing the causes. - 4 -
【解析】选A。 故选A。 We may not be able to accurately predict disasters, but we can surely lend a hand out for the needy. B Scientists think they have answered a mystery: How some ocean creatures got so huge so quickly. A few million years ago, the largest whales averaged about 15 feet long. Then seemingly overnight, one type of whale, the toothless baleen whale(须鲸类) became huge. Modern blue whales get as big as 100 feet. Nicholas Pyenson of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum said, “Why is that? ” “It happened in the glance of an evolutionary eye, which makes it harder to figure out what happened. ” said Graham Slater, lead author of the study. Their study has suggested an answer: Ice ages in the last 3 to 5 million years started it, changing the oceans and food

Unit 4 Making the news
We were ordinary people taking the bus every day that summer.During the early morning rides,we sat sleepily on our seats. One of the passengers was a small grey man to the center for senior citizens. He walked with a stoop(驼背) and a sad look on his face.We paid little attention to him. Then one July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled to us before sitting down. The driver nodded politely, the rest of us being silent. The next day,the old man boarded the bus energetically, smiled and said loud,“Good morning!”Some of us looked up,amazed, and murmured“Good morning”.The following weeks we were more surprised. Our friend was dressed in a nice old suit with the thin hair carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other. One morning he had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver smilingly asked,“Have you got yourself a girlfriend?”He nodded shyly,“She lives at the center.”The other passengers whistled and clapped at him.Charlie bowed before sitting down.Every morning after that Charlie always brought a flower. Some regular passengers began bringing him flowers for his bunch.Everyone smiled and joked about it.But one morning he didn’t turn up.When he wasn’t t here the following days,we started wondering if he was sick or...We stopped at the center for senior citizens. The staff told us he was fine, but he hadn’t been coming that week. One of his very close friends had died at the weekend. They expected him back on Monday. How silent we were on the rest of the way to work! The next Monday he was waiting at the stop, stooping a bit more and a bit more grey.Inside the bus was a silence, all of us sitting with our eyes filled with tears and wild flowers in our hands.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

Taylore is a kid who passes by to ride sometimes and help us with chores. Barely 15, she’s never short of advice, and one of her favorite pastimes is teasing me about being afraid to go too fast on a horse. Last summer four of u s rode down the trail behind our woods: my wife Karen, Taylore, Taylore’s friend Kendall and me. I was riding my 13-year-old, Tawny. We were two miles from home when, for some unexplainable reason, I pushed Tawny into a gallop(飞驰). The other horses were anxious to catch up, and just like that, the race was on.Taylore brushed past my left leg and, seconds later, Kendall went by on my right. I realized Tawny was covering ground faster than I’d ever seen her. She strained every muscle in her body to catch u p with the girls. It was like a truck winding over a mountain road without brakes (闸). Part of me felt perfectly in control, while another part screamed that I wasn’t.In half a mile I knew we’d be crossing the highway, so I prayed that the girls would be fine. I gave up calculating how long it might take before my horse would be tried enough to want to slow down.I was just about out of answers when I saw the girls slowing in front of me. Their horses were relaxed and comfortable, not even breathing hard. Taylore’s face glowe d. She gave me a high five. "Wow, you did well, "she said. "I knew you’d go fast when you were ready."No one in the group had even broken a sweat, except me. I was still nervous from the crazy pace. My heart pounded too, but not f rom exercise. Karen claims I was showing off for the girls that day, and maybe she’s right. But I think I had something to prove. Because despite my wrinkles (皱纹), glasses and gray hair,I was feeling young at heart. And, like a horse on a warm summer day, I’m always ready to kick up my heels.1. How did the race between the girls and the author begin?A. His horse’s gallop made the other horses want to catch up.B. He wanted to show off his riding skills for the girls.C. They wanted to know whose horse could run fastest.D. They teased him about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.2. During the race, ___________.A. the author’s horse outran the girl’s horses the whole timeB. the author was confident that Tawny was in controlC. the girls were so anxious to win that they sweated a lotD. the author’s good performance took Taylore by surprise3. When the race ended, the author’s heart pounded because ________.A. he was feeling thrilled and youngB. it was really tough exercise for himC. he was worried that the girls might be in dangerD. he felt quite embarrassed that he had lost the race4. The phrase " kick up my heels" at the end can be replaced by _________.A. devote myselfB. enjoy myselfC. accept my challengeD. take part in running competition【文章大意】文章描述作者和两个女孩骑马比赛,这让作者感到兴奋,也感到虽然自己上了年纪,但是有一颗年轻的心。
阅读理解(2019·绵阳诊断)German artist HA Schult is an unusual artist who uses trash (废物) to make sculptures.“We are living in the time of garbage,”says Schult.“I created a thousand sculptures of garbage. They are a mirror of ourselves.” Here, S chult was talking about his 1,000 trash sculptures in the form of humans. He first exhibited them in 1996 in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.“They are social sculptures,”he explains.“They are not only sculptures for the eyes. They are sc ulptures to spread the idea that we live in a time of garbage.” So far, Schult's social sculptures have been on show in Paris, in Moscow's Red Square, on the Great Wall of China, and in the desert next to the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo.HA Schult's work is unforgettable.Although his work has had a big influence on the art world, Schult remains modest about his creations: “Artists have to learn every time.We are not important. All that counts is the time in which we are living.”Trash art has been around for years. But it seems that only the popular artists are regarded as true artists when working with trash. Why can't common people be considered artists when they use the same things and change them into some form of personal art? Maybe it's because we all have our own preset ideas of what art is and isn't, or whom artists are or should be.You can be an artist like Schult if you try.Look at used metal cans. What might be done with them? Imagine them in any number of new uses, or imagine them simply as an art form. What about boxes or clothing? Boxes can usually serve as new storage containers and houses for pets. And clothing?Imagine taking old clothes and turning them into hats or hanging organizers.

AImagine jet-setting from Tokyo to Paris, enjoying first-class travel, a four-course dinner and a city tour —all without leaving the ground. This is the future of air travel according to Japanese company First Airlines, which has used the power of virtual reality to create dream vacations.Passengers avoid the costly airport transfer, the baggage fees or busy airport terminal(航站楼)—and instead enjoy the privileges of business or first-class travel and an expensive tour of Paris—all while remaining motionless in Tokyo. As well as Paris, First Airlines also offers the virtual destinations of New York, Rome and Hawaii. After boarding, guests can settle down for the two-hour flight on their advanced Airbus seat—surrounded by decoration that is modeled on the inside of an aircraft, for maximum realism. There is flight service and VR, foods, music for every destination. Passengers will be served a delicious meal by air stewards, alongside drinks and other desserts. The menu depends on the destination of choice—Manhattan clam chowder and cheesecake for New York and salmon tartar and onion soup for Paris. After landing at the destination, guests can enjoy a 360-degree tour of the destination—all thanks to projection(投影)mapping and video. It makes for a supposedly stress-free vacation, perfect for those whose ability to travel abroad is limited by cost or health. Virtual reality is becoming increasingly present everywhere at all times in the world of travel—allowing travelers to appreciate the wonders of the world, all without leaving their house. At just 4, 980 yen($46)for business class and 5, 980 yen($56)for first class—these two-hour flights are far more affordable than their real-life flights. Tokyo citizens eager to experience First Airlines can book a trip on the website, with reservations currently being taken until May 2024.【文章大意】本文是一篇科普类文章。
