Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket - anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set up his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year he met John Ridgway and started to work as an instructor at Ridgway’s school of adventure（冒险）in Scotland, where he learned about Ridgway’s cold-waterexploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, he decided that this would be his future.
In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition （探险）towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite（冻伤）, ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his sled up and over the rocky mountains.
Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe

Years ago my grandson came to me for help. He said, “Grandpa, how is it that you’ve achieved so much in your life? You’re still full of energy, and I’m already tired of struggling. What should I do?”
I didn’t know what to say to him then. But knowing my days are numbered, I think that I owe (欠) him an answer. So here is what I believe.
I think a lot of it has to do with how a person looks at things. I call it ‘keeping your eyes wide open’.
First, realize that life is filled wi th surprises, but many are good ones. If you don’t keep watching for them, you’ll miss half the excitement. When you meet up with challenges (挑战), welcome them. They’ll make you wiser, stronger, and more capable (有能力的) than you were the day before. When you make a mistake, be grateful for the things it teaches you.
It’s also important to decide exactly what you want. Then keep your mind focused on it, and be prepared to receive it.
But be ready to end up in some new places too. As you grow up, you’ll be giv en bigger shoes to fill. So be ready for endings as well as challenging beginnings. Sometimes we have to be brave enough to move from the familiar to the unfamiliar.
Remember that your choices will create your successes and failures. So consider all the pathways ahead, and decide which ones to follow. Then believe in yourself, get up, and get going.
Most important of all, never give up yourself. The person that ends up as a winner is the one who resolves to win. Give life everything you’ve got, and life w ill give its best back to you.

Walt Disney was born in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, he enjoyed
