The coordinate system is designed to provide a way of locating the tool in relation to the workpiece. It consists of three linear axes(x, y, z), plus three rotational axes(a, b, c). Z axis is important because it is in line with the rotating spindle of the machine. X axis is the main movement axis. If Z and X axes are determined, then Y is the third axis. Most numerical control systems do not need all six axes.
