passage 3

passage 3

Passage ThreeI was 53 when my first book, The Naked Face, was published in 1970. People frequently remarked, “Isn’t it wonderful you’ve finally achieved your lifelong ambition.” In truth, writing a book hadn’t occurred to me before I sat down and did it. The Naked Face was an accident. At the time I had been a successful television writer for “The Party Duke Show” and “I Dream of Jeanie”. Before breaking into TV, I won an Oscar for writing the 1947 film The Bachelor and The Bobby-Soxer, and a Tony in 1959 for the Broadway Musical Redhead. But I found the prospect of writing a novel utterly intimidating, I assumed I didn’t have whatever extra dash of magic that goes into composing a book. Then, I hatched a plot about a psychoanalyst whom someone tries to murder. He has no enemies and no clue who’d want him dead. Using his skills as an analyst, he sets out to solve the mystery. This story might just as well have been a film, play or TV movie except for one challenge: It demanded the audience to get inside the hero’s head and hear his thoughts. I couldn’t figure out how to do that in a script. So I tried to let go of the notion----but it wouldn’t let go of me.Finally, I started dictating my attempt at a novel. I’ve always dictated everything, including screenplays, because my mind works faster than my hands. I rewrote the book about six times---deleting sentences, inserting new paragraphs---and my secretary kept retyping it.Once I finished the book, I had no idea of the next step. I was familiar with all the Hollywood agents but no literary agents. I called my dear friend, the writer Irving Wallace. He kindly sent my manuscript to this agent, who took over.I was less than optimistic because I didn’t view myself as a real author. Three months and seven rejections went by, and when my agent called with good news, I almost didn’t believe it. William Morrow had offered me a $1, 000 in advance. I immediately replied, “Grab it!” But I paid five times that amount to see the book in print at last.On the morning the novel came out, I hurried to a bookstore in Beverly Hills and bought one---for fear that, otherwise, nary a copy of The Naked Face would move off the shelves. I’ve done the same with every book of mine since, just in case.My novel’s first review appeared in The Los Angeles Times. The critic wrote that I shouldn’t have made the killer quite so obvious. I don’t think she had bothered to finish the book, because the killer seems very obvious until the end. Forlorn, I expected all further reviews to be equally negative. Mercifully, The New York Times came out with wonderful reviews, describing my book as “the best first mystery novel of the year”.A publicist arranged for me to promote The Naked Face at a literary lunch. Six authors--- historians Will and Ariel Durant, Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith, novelist Gwen Davis, and U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers and I ---sat at head table. We each spoke about our books, which were available for purchase there. After lunch, people queued up to have their various copies signed. Long lines, all the way to the back of the room, formed for every other writer. In front of me, not a single soul. I took out a pen and pretended to be busy, pretended I didn’t care, pretended I didn’t want to commit suicide.A couple of months later, I met with a William Morrow executive in New York. He told me “Your book has done very well. It’s sold 17,000 copies. ” I said, “Excuse me. I have a television show on the air that’s watched by 20 million viewers every week. I’m not terribly impressed by 17,000 copies.”The Naked Face made no money---it cost me money because I paid for the book out. But something fantastic happened during the experience, mortifying moments and all. I discovered a sense of freedom I had never known. When you write a movie or a play, yours is but one voice in a cacophony of opinions. You deal with aproducer who decrees a scene too expensive, a director who changes your female lead into a man, an actor who insists, “My character would never say that.” But when you write a book, you alone are the producer, director and cast. You decide your story’s setting, whether to make your characters healthy or ill, rich or poor, heroic or evil. You’re totally responsible for your novel. It’s all you. I loved that.I wrote a second novel, The Other Side of Midnight, with no illusion that it would be any more lucrative than The Naked Face. Published in 1974, The Other Side of Midnight became a phenomenon, selling millions of copies in hard and paperback. Suddenly, I busted out as a novelist with a capital N Fan mail poured in. Strangers would stop me to chat my books.Previously, only those in the entertainment industry appreciated my talents. If you ask someone on the street about his favorite movie, he’ll tell you not only the title but the star. Ask who wrote the screen play, and you’ll get a blank look. With a novel, the author is the star. The Naked Face transformed my life. If I had never hit upon that specific idea, I wouldn’t be a novelist today. I’d still make good money writing scripts. I’d still enjoy my career and my family. But I would not have left my mark. And most of all, I would not have had as much fun.1.What did the author of this article win Tony for?[A] The Naked Face. 2003年AMC8中文版答案

1.(E)A cube has12edges,8corners and6faces.The sum is26.2.(C)The smallest prime is2,which is a factor of every even number.Because58is the only even number,it has the smallest prime factor.3.(D)Since30of the120grams arefiller,30120=25%of the burger isfiller.So100%−25%=75%of the burger is notfiller.ORThere are120−30=90grams that are notfiller.So90120=75%is notfiller.4.(C)The following chart shows that the answer must be5tricycles.Bicycles Tricycles Wheels0721162025193418ORLet b equal the number of bicycles and t equal the number of tricycles. Then the number of vehicles is b+t=7,and the number of wheels is2b+3t=19.Because b=7−t,it follows that2(7−t)+3t=1914−2t+3t=1914+t=19t=5.ORIf each child had a bicycle, there would be14wheels.Since there are19 wheels,5of the vehicles must be tricycles.5.(B)If20%of the number is12,the number must be60.Then30%of60is0.30×60=18.ORSince20%of the number is12,it follows that10%of the number is6.So 30%of the number is18.56.(B)A =12(√144)(√25)A =12·12·5A =30square units 7.(A)Blake scored a total of 4×78=312points on the four tests.Jenny scored 10−10+20+20=40more points than Blake,so her average was 3524=88,or 10points higher than Blake’s.ORThe total point di fference between Jenny’s and Blake’s tests was 10−10+20+20=40points.The average di fference is 404=10points.8.(A)Because all of the cookies have the same thickness, only the surface area of their shapes needs to be considered. The surface area of each of Art’strapezoid cookies is 12·3·8=12in 2.Since he makes 12cookies,the surface area of the dough is 12×12=144in 2.Roger’s rectangle cookies each have surface area 2·4=8in 2;therefore,he makes 144÷8=18cookies.Paul’s parallelogram cookies each have surface area 2·3=6in 2.He makes 144÷6=24cookies.Trisha’s triangle cookies each have surface area 12·4·3=6in 2.She makes144÷6=24cookies.So Art makes the fewest cookies.9.(C)Art’s 12cookies sell for 12×$0.60=$7.20.Roger’s 18cookies should cost $7.20÷18=$.40each.ORThe trapezoid’s area is 12in 2and the rectangle’s area is 8in 2.So the cost of a rectangle cookie should be 812 60c |=40c |.10.(E)The triangle’s area is 6in 2,or half that of the trapezoid. So Trisha willmake twice as many cookies as Art,or 24.11.(B)Thursday’s price of$40is increased10%or$4,so on Friday the shoes aremarked$44.Then10%of$44or$4.40is taken off,so the price on Monday is$44−$4.40=$39.60.ORMarking a price10%higher multiplies the original price by1.1,and reducinga price by10%multiplies the price by0.9.So the price of a pair of shoes thatwas originally$40will be$40×1.1×0.9=$39.60.12.(E)If6is one of the visible faces, the product will be divisible by6.If6isnot visible, the product of the visible faces will be1×2×3×4×5=120, which is also divisible by6.Because the product is always divisible by6,the probability is1.13.(B)A cube has four red faces if it is attached to exactly two other cubes. The four top cubes are each attached to only one other cube,so they havefive red faces. The four bottom corner cubes are each attached to three others, so they have three red faces. The remaining six each have four red faces. 14.(D)As given,T=7.This implies that F=1and that O equals either4or5.Since O is even,O=4.Therefore,R=8.Replacing letters with numeralsgives7W4+7W414U8W+W must be less than10;otherwise,a1would be carried to the next column, and O would be5.So W<5.W=0because W=U,W=1 because F=1,W=2because if W=2then U=4=O,and W=4 because O=4.So W=3.The addition problem is734+734146815.(B)There are only two ways to construct a solid from three cubes so thateach cube shares a face with at least oneother:andNeither of these configurations has both the front and side views shown. The four-cube configuration has the required front and side views. Thus at least four cubes are necessary.FRONT SIDE1321Question:Is it possible to construct a five-cube configuration with these front and side views?16.(D)There are 2choices for the driver. The other three can seat themselvesin 3×2×1=6di fferent ways.So the number of seating arrangements is 2×6=12.17.(E)Because Jim has brown eyes and blond hair, none of his siblings canhave both blue eyes and black hair. Therefore, neither Benjamin nor Tevyn can be Jim’s sibling.Consequently, there are only three possible pairs for Jim’s siblings –Nadeen and Austin,Nadeen and Sue,or Austin and Sue.Since Nadeen has di fferent hair color and eye color from both Austin and Sue,neither can be Nadeen’s sibling. So Austin and Sue are Jim’s siblings.Benjamin,Nadeen and Tevyn are siblings in the other family.18.(D)In the graph below, the six classmates who are not friends with Sarah orwith one of Sarah’s friends are circled.Consequently, six classmates will not be invited to the party.19.(C)A number with 15,20and 25as factors must be divisible by their leastcommon multiple (LCM).Because 15=3×5,20=22×5,and 25=52,the LCM of 15,20and 25is 22×3×52=300.There are three multiples of 300between 1000and 2000:1200,1500and 1800.20.(D)Note that in the same period of time, the hour hand moves 112as far asthe minute hand.At 4:00a.m.,the minute hand is at 12and the hour hand isat 4.By 4:20a.m.,the minute hand has moved 13of way around the clock to4,and the hour hand has moved 112×13=136of the way around the clock from4.Therefore,the angle formed by the hands at 4:20a.m.is 136·360◦=10◦.ORAs the minute hand moves 13of the way around the clock face from 12to 4,the hour hand will move 13of the way from 4to 5.So the hour hand willmove 13of 112of 360◦,or 10◦.21.(B)Label the feet of the altitudes from B and C as E and F respectively.Considering right triangles AEB and DF C ,AE =√102−82=√36=6cm,and F D =√172−82=√225=15cm.So the area of △AEB is 12(6)(8)=24cm 2,and the area of △DF C is 12 (15)(8)=60cm 2.Rectangle BCF E has area 164−(24+60)=80cm 2.Because BE =CF =8cm,it follows that BC =10cm.AB C D108178E FORLet BC =EF =x .From the first solution we know that AE =6and F D =15.Therefore,AD =x +21,and the area of the trapezoid ABCD is (8) 12[x +(x +21)] =164.So4(2x +21)=164,2x +21=41,2x =20,and x =10.22.(C)For Figure A,the area of the square is 22=4cm 2.The diameter of thecircle is 2cm,so the radius is 1cm and the area of the circle is πcm 2.So the area of the shaded region is 4−πcm 2.For Figure B,the area of the square is also 4cm 2.The radius of each ofthe four circles is 12cm,and the area of each circle is 12 2π=14πcm 2.The combined area of all four circles is πcm 2.So the shaded regions in A and B have the same area. For Figure C,the radius of the circle is 1cm,so the area of the circle is πcm 2.Because the diagonal of the inscribed square is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with legs of equal lengths, use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the length s of one side of the inscribed square. That is,s 2+s 2=22=4.So s 2=2cm 2,the area of the square. Therefore, the area of the shaded region is π−2cm 2.Because π−2>1and 4−π<1,the shaded region in Figure C has the largest area.Note that the second figure consists of four small copies of the first figure.Because each of the four small squares has sides half the length of the sidesof the big square, the area of each of the four small figures is 14the area of Figure A.Because there are four such small figures in Figure B,the shaded regions in A and B have the same area.23.(A)There are four di fferent positions for the cat in the 2×2array,so afterevery fourth move, the cat will be in the same location.Because 247=4×61+3,the cat will be in the 3rd position clockwise from the first,or the lower right quadrant. There are eight possible positions for the mouse.Because 247=8×30+7,the mouse will be in the 7th position counterclockwise from the first,or the left-hand side of the lower leftquadrant.B24.(B)All points along the semicircular part of thecourse are the same distance from X ,so the first part of the graph is a horizontal line.As the ship moves from B to D ,its distance from X decreases, then it increases as the ship moves from D to C .Only graph B has these features.25.(C)Let M be the midpoint of BC .Since △ABC is isosceles,AM is analtitude to base BC .Because A coincides with O when △ABC is foldedalong BC ,it follows that AM =MO =52+1+1=92cm.Also,BC =5−1−1=3cm,so the area of △ABC is 12·BC ·AM =12·3·92=274cm 2.A。
