exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑 ). Students arc increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility( 清晰
度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they
have been taught. Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased
the tendency to make notes "mindlessly" by taking down word for word what the professors said
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper .They listened
to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the
talk , they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood
concepts. The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand.
However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups
scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts. The researchers' report said, "While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken
mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears." In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but
were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed
significantly better on the exam. These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate
learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future. 21. More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can . A. write more notes B. digest concepts better C. get higher scores D. understand lectures better

That way, the cue and thereward become interconnected. Finally, when you see the shoes, your brain will start longing for the reward, which will make it easier to work out day after day. They recycle their garbage because they care about the environment. They pay $5 for a caramel brulee latte because they like expensive coffee drinks. It's undeniable that behavior comes from our inner dispositions(性情), but in many instances we also draw inferences about who we are, as suggested by the social psychologist Daryl Bern, by observing our own behavior. We can be strangers toourselves. If we knew our own minds, why should we need to guess what our preferences are from our behavior? If our minds were an open book, we would know exactly how much we care about the environment or like lattes. Actually, we often need to look to our behavior to figure out who we are. Moreover, we don't just use our behavior to learn about our particular types of character --- we infer characters that weren't there before. Our behavior is often shaped by little pressures around us, which we fail to recognize. Maybe we recycle because our wives and neighbors would disapprove if we didn't. Maybe we buy lattes in order to impress the people around us. We should not mistakenly believe that we always behave as a result of some inner disposition.Whatever pressures there can be or inferences one can make, people become what they do, though it may not be in compliance(符合)with their true desires. Therefore, we should all bear in mind Kurt Vonnegut's advice: “We are what we pretend t o be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”(1)According to the passage, personalities and attitudes are commonly believed to _______.A.determine one's behaviorB.reflect one's tasteC.influence one's surroundingsD.result from one's habits(2)Which of the following would Daryl Bern most probably agree with?A.The return of a wallet can indicate one's honesty.B.A kind person will offer his seat to the old.C.One recycles plastics to protect the environment.D.One buys latte out of love of coffee.(3)What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the passage?A.We fail to realize our inner dispositions.B.We can be influenced by outside pressures.C.Our behavior is the result of our true desires.D.Our characters can shape our social relationships.(4)What does the author mainly discusses in the passage?A.Personalities and attitudes.B.Preferences and habits.C.Behavior and personalities.D.Attitudes and preferences.4.(2014·北京)阅读理解MultitaskingWhat is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed (展示) at the entrance? Or the soft background music? But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop's scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers' intension to purchase increased by 80 percent. When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand's success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants' disproving attitude and don't touch what you can't afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this. Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut (椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store's windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.(1)According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand store?A.Friendly assistant.B.Unique scents.C.Soft background musicD.attractive window display.(2)E-shops are mentioned in the passage to _______ .A.as how the advantages of brick-and-mortar storesB.urge shop assistants to change their attitudeC.push stores to use sights and soundsD.introduce the rise of e-commerce(3)The underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 5 means _______ .A.a platform that exhibits goodsB.a spot where travelers like to stayC.a place where customers love to goD.a target that a store expects to meet(4)The main purpose of the passage is to ______ .pare and evaluateB.examine and assessC.argue and discussrm and explain。

Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries describedflocks(群)so large that they darkened the sky for hours. It was calculated that when its population reach its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons – a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant birds in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands. Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans’ need for wood, which scattered(驱散)the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again. In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden in September 1, 1914.24. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons .A. were the biggest bird in the worldB. lived mainly in the south of AmericaC. did great harm to the natural environmentD. were the largest bird population in the US25. The underlined word “undoing” probably refers to the pigeons’ .A. escapeB. ruinC. liberationD. evolution26. What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons? A. To seek pleasureB. To save other birdsC. To make moneyD. To protect crops27. What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan? A. It was ignored by the publicB. It was declared too lateC. It was unfairD. 故选D.25.B. 故选B.26.C. 故选C.27.B. 做题时要立足于文章整体,再迅速读一遍短文,短文中的问题和答案的设置前后都是相关联的,有着一定的连续性,体现着文章的基本脉络.CA typical lion tamer(驯兽师)in people’s mind is an entertainer holding a whip(鞭)and a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it’s mostly for show. In reality, it’s the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion’s face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair. How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve(e.g. lose weight, start a business, travel more)--- only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress? This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we can’t focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving. It doesn’t have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to accomplish, someone you want to become … take immediate action. If you’re clear about where you want to go, the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.28. Why does the lion tamer use a chair? A. To show off his skills.B. To trick the lion.C. To get ready for a fight.D. To entertain the audience.29. In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair? A. They feel puzzled over choices.B. They hold on to the wrong things.C. They find it hard to make changed.D. They have to do something for show.30. What is the author’s attitude towards the experts mentioned in Paragraph 3? A. TolerantB. DoubtfulC. RespectfulD. Supportive31. When the world is “waving a chair in your face”, you’re advised to .A. wait for a better chanceB. break your old habitsC. make a quick decisionD. ask for clear guidance【考点】O5:科教类阅读;P2:文中细节;P4:逻辑推理.【分析】本文是一篇议论文. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion’s face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time"可知,当驯兽师拿着椅子在狮子面前时,狮子关注椅子的四条腿,因此椅子用是用来戏耍狮子的. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next"可知,当注意力分散时,狮子开始变得困惑,人们跟狮子相似,也会困惑,不知道该怎么做. This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best"可知,专家们正忙于讨论哪一种选择是最好的,这令作者苦恼,因此可以推断出作者对专家的态度是怀疑. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing. You just need to get started."及"Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people"可知,当你面前挥舞着一把椅子时,你要集中精力做一件事,那就是开始下决心去做.成功的人的习惯之一就是在感觉准备好之前就开始行动,文中的"take immediate action"与"make a quick decision"同义. DAs more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations--- UNESCO and National Geographic among them---have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center, Yale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, looking and raising a family in a village in Nepal.Documenting the Tangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayans reaches of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record. At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials---including photographs, films, tap recordings, and field notes---which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection. Now, through the two organizations that he has founded---the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project---Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stores around the world, available not just to scholars but to the youngers.Generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. 高中英语真题:2014高考英语阅读理解全程基础训练(9)及答案(三)A---(2013·辽宁,A)is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arriv al in last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bic ycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through cross roads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks (人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars j ust can't provide.Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to b uy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I imme diately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on th e streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like cr ossing a major highway back in the . The streets here were wid e, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderfu l. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and pe ople. Biking made me feel alive.

After getting settled finally in Brunswick, New Jersey, I enrolled(注册) my son in kindergarten. Several weeks later, my son’s teacher asked me to meet him at his office. In the teacher’s office, and exchange of greetings was followed by his questions: “Is your son mentally retarded(弱智的)?Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?”Was he talking about my wonderful Scola? NO, no, it can’t be. What a helpless, lonely moment! I told him that Scola was a quiet, sweet little boy, instead. I asked him why he was asking me all these questions. My son could not follow the teacher’s directions, he told me, and thus, Scola was disrupting the class. Didn’t he know my son did not speak English yet?He was angry;“Why hasn’t your son been taught to speak English? Don’t you speak English at home?”No, I didn’t speak English at home, I replied. I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months, and I didn't want him to forget his native language. Well, wrong answer! What kind of person would not speak in English to her son at home and at all time? “Are you one of those people who e to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country, never wanting to be a part of this society?”Needless to say, I tried to tell him I was not one of “those people.”Then he told me the meeting was over, and I left.As I had expected, my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over. He went on to graduate from college and got a job, earning close to six figures. He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted, contented life. And he has benefited from being bilingual(双语的)。
