On Friday June 21st,2013,the folks at the annual Sonoma County Fair in California celebrated the 25th anniversary of a rather unusual contest—one that crowns the “World's Ugliest Dog”! And while in most settings a title like this would be considered insulting (无礼的) here,it is liked by both the dog owners who come from all over the world and the visitors that come to cheer the contestants. To mark this special anniversary, this year's fair that was themed “Dog Days of Summer” featured among other things, including an exhibit featuring the contestants and winners from the last 25 years. As for the winner? Unlike last year, when he had flown in all the way from London,England, this year's title winner was Chico,California resident Walle, who beat out 29 other equally “ugly contestants”. The refreshing part was that Walle, who happened to be a last minute entrant(参赛者),is not a nearly hairless,Chinese Crested Chihuahua or a mix of both breeds, which have been dominating the contest for many years now. Instead,he is a mutt mix—part beagle, part basset and part boxer. The four-year-old impressed the judges with his giant head and humped back. As one of them put it,he looked as though he had been photoshopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals. It exactly represents the kind of natural “ugliness” they were looking for!Along with the title, the first time entrant received a cash prize of $1,500 as well as scheduled appearances on NBC's weekend Today on Sunday, the Today Show on Monday and the Jimmy Kimmel Show on Wednesday.Though the competition may seem unbelievable to some people,it is held just for fun and organized by an animal psychiatrist who not only vets the dogs before they enter the competition to ensure they are healthy, but also has a “pet” talk with them to ensure they are also happy. It is also important to remember all the contestants come from homes where they are loved because of their rather unusual looks. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!【解题导语】在6月21日举行的世界上最丑的狗的比赛上,一条三个品种的杂交狗赢得了“世界上最丑的狗”这个头衔。

2023年考研英语二真题答案之阅读理解Text 2部分Part ADirections:Read the following four texts.Answer the questions after each text by choosing A,B, C or D. Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. (40 points) Text 2It's easy to dismiss as absurd the federal government's ideas for plugging the chronic funding gap of our national parks. Can anyone really think it's a good idea to allow Amazon deliveries to your tent in Yosemite or food trucks to line up under the redwood trees at Sequoia National Park? But the administration is right about one thing: U.S. national parks are in crisis. Collectively, they have a maintenance backlog of more than $12 billion. Roads, trails, restrooms, visitor centers and other infrastructure are crumbling. But privatizing and commercializing the campgrounds would not be the panacea that the Interior Department's Outdoor Advisory Committee would have us believe. Campgrounds are a tiny portion of the overall infrastructure backlog, and concessionaires in the parks hand over, on average, only about 5% of their revenues to the National Park Service.Moreover. increased privatization would certainly undercut one of the major reasons why 300 million visitors come to the parks each year: to enjoy nature and get a respite from the commercial drumbeat that overwhelms daily life. The real problem is that the parks have been chronically starved of funding. We conducted a comprehensive survey examining how us residents view their national parks. and we found that Americans place a very high value on them whether or not they actually visit them. The peer-reviewed economic survey of 700 U.S taxpayers, conducted by mail and internet, also found that people would be willing to pay a significant amount of money to make sure the parks and their programs are kept intact. Some 81% of respondents said they would be willing to pay additional taxes for the next 10 years to avoid any cuts to the national parks. The national parks provide great value to U.S. residents both as places to escape and as symbols of nature. On top of this, they produce value from their extensive educational programs, their positive impact on the climate through carbon sequestration, their contribution to our cultural and artistic life. and of course through tourism. The parks also help keep America's past alive, working with thousands of local jurisdictions around the country to protect historical sites including Ellis Island and Gettysburg and to bring the stories of these places to life. The parks do all this on a shoestring. Congress allocates onl$3 billion a year tothe national park system an amount that has been flat since 2001 (in inflation-adjusted dollars) with the exception of a onetime boost in 2009 as part of the Obama stimulus package Meanwhile. the number of annual visitors has increased by more than 50% since 1980, and now stands at 330 million visitors per year.26. What problem are U.S. national parks faced with?A. decline of business profitsB. inadequate commercializationC. lack of transportation servicesD. poorly maintained infrastructure【答案】 D27. Increased privatization of the campground may?A. spoil visitor experienceB. help preserve natureC. bring operational pressureD. boost visits to parks【答案】 A28. according to para 5, most respondents in the survey would?A. go to the national parks on a regular basis.B. advocate a bigger budget for the national parksC. agree to pay extra for the national parksD. support the national parks' recent reforms【答案】 C29.The national parks are valuable in that they__.A. lead the way in tourismB. sponsor research on climateC. have historical significanceD. provide an income for the locals【答案】 C.30. A recent study by the Chinese University of Hong Kong has discovered another saying: An apple a day keeps old age away. The study involved fruit flies(g果蝇), as they share many genes(基因) with humans. Researchers gave one group of fruit flies normal food, and another group of fruit flies got the same food including apple. The results showed that flies that ate apple lived an average of 55 days longer than the flies that didn’t eat apple. The study also found that apple-eating flies were more able to walk, climb and move about as they became old, the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports. The researchers believe that the antioxidants (抗氧化剂)found in apples are good for health. In another experiment, researchers studied the diets of thousands of women. They found that those women who often ate apples were 20 percent less likely to have heartdisease.Scientists have recently discovered the apple’s genetic code(基因代码). This allows scientists to make new kinds of fruit that are healthier. Researchers are already using this information to grow apples with added antioxidants. Antioxidants help tokeep eyes and joints (关节)healthy and protect against heart attacks and cancer. Apples that help people lose weight may be in supermarkets in just four or five years. They are said to be “extra healthy” apples that can stop people from overea ting. 【小题1】Fruit flies were used in the research because_______________ .A.they love to eat applesB.they share similar genes with humansC.they are easy to catchD.they can live longer【小题2】By studying the diets of many women, researchers ___________ . They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气), because this is where the weather forms(形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(气象学家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare(比较)them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead(提前).1. Satellites travel _____________.A. in spaceB. in the atmosphereC. above the groundD. above space2. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after heavy rain damaged the only power cables in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.Luckily, according to the researchers at the University of Technology (UT) in Lima, Peru heard about their problem andfound a wonderful solution. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb. While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food (using the sun's energy, water and chemicals from the soil), they also produce waste which they return to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce electrons ―the building blocks of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to capture the energy and keep it in the lamp's batteries for later use. The researchers say a single charge can power a 50-watt LED light for two hours ― enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done. The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.( )6.What are the problems of oil lamps according to Paragraph 1?A. They are difficult to use and create pollution.B. They are expensive to buy and easily damaged.C. They are difficult to repair and produce little light.D. But the trend lying behind these matters is rarely talked about. This is the decline in the growth in yields of some of the world’s major crops.A new study by the University of Minnesota and McGill University in Montreal looks at where, and how far, this decline is occurring。

高二经济学基础英语阅读理解25题1<背景文章>Supply and Demand: The Fundamental Principles in EconomicsIn the world of economics, supply and demand are two of the most crucial concepts. Supply refers to the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices during a given period. On the other hand, demand represents the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at different prices within a specific time frame. There are several factors influencing supply. One important factor is the cost of production. If the cost of raw materials, labor, or other inputs increases, the supply may decrease as producers may find it less profitable to produce the same quantity. Technological advancements, however, can increase supply. For example, new and more efficient production methods can enable producers to produce more goods with the same amount of resources. For demand, factors like consumer income play a significant role. When consumers' income rises, they are generally more likely to purchase more goods and services, especially normal goods. The price of related goods also affects demand. For substitute goods, if the price of one good(say, coffee) increases, the demand for its substitute (like tea) may increase. For complementary goods, like cars and petrol, if the price of cars goes up, the demand for petrol may decrease as fewer cars are being bought. In the market, the interaction between supply and demand determines the equilibrium price and quantity. When the quantity supplied equals the quantity demanded, the market is in equilibrium. If the supply is greater than the demand, there is a surplus, and prices tend to fall. Conversely, if the demand exceeds the supply, there is a shortage, and prices usually rise.1. <问题1>A. Supply is only about how much producers can produce without considering price.B. Supply is the quantity of a good or service producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices.C. Supply is determined solely by the number of producers in the market.D. Supply has nothing to do with the cost of production.答案:B。

Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient (便利的) way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two—thirds of the world's population live within 80 kilometers of the sea coast. In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive (=continue to live). Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man's needs. The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology is impressive. 考研英语阅读理解试题及名师解析(2)

考研英语阅读理解试题及名师解析(2) Being a man hasalways been dangerous. There are about 105 males born for every 100 females, but this ratio drops to near balance at the age of maturity, and among70-year-olds there are twice as many women as men. But the great universal ofmale mortality is being changed. Now, boy babies survive almost as well as girlsdo. This means that, for the first time, there will be an excess of boys inthose crucial years when they are searching for a mate. More important, anotherchance for natural selection has been removed. Fifty years ago, the chance of ababy(particularly a boy baby) surviving depended on its weight. A kilogram toolight or too heavy meant almost certain death. Today it makes almost nodifference. Since much of the variation is due to genes, one more agent ofevolution has gone。
