道出此事的人是新华社前高级编辑、北外新闻学院特聘教授李竹润。
1月4日，李老在自己的微博里说：“把…西点军校学员学雷锋‟的谎言引进中国，是我一生中所犯的最大错误之一。
本人对自己一切言论负全责，特承认错误、道歉。
”
“美国西点军校学雷锋”是1981年的一则愚人节新闻，李竹润当时不明就里，信以为真，把它写进新闻教材，以致广为流传。
直到16年后，他在《读书》杂志上读到了李慎之的一篇文章，文中提到“前几年流传美国西点军校挂有雷锋的画像，我曾问过在那里教书的中国教授，得到的答复是…没有听说过‟”，才知道自己上了当。
