阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

“Cool” is a word with many meanings. Its basic meaning is used to express a

temperature that is neither cold nor hot. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings.

“Cool” can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything. When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say, “It’s cool.” You may think, “He’ s so cool,” when you see your favorite footballer.

We all maximize the meaning of “cool”. You use it instead of many words such as “new” or “surprising”. Here’ s an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall they had visited. On one student’s paper was just one sentence, “It’s so cool.” Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.

But the story also shows a scarcity of words. Without “cool”, some people have no words to show the same meaning. So it is quite important to keep some credibility (可信性). Can you think of many other words that make your life as colorful as the word “cool”? I can. And I think they are also very cool.

36. In daily conversation the word "cool" is used to express_________.

A. different feelings

B. feelings of interest

C. a little bit surprising

D. feelings of cold

37. When we say the weather is cool we mean that _________.

A. we have a comfortable weather

B. we feel a bit cold

C. we feel a little bit hot

D. we are uncomfortable

38. The underlined word “scarcity” in the sentence may mean_____________.

A. seldom happening

B. poor memory

C. being not enough, shortage

D. being not found easily

Mickey’s Goal

Last night was the last game for my eight-year-old son’s soccer team. It was the final quarter. The score was two to one, my son’s team in the lead. Parents surrounded the playground, offering encouragement.

With less than ten seconds remaining, the ball suddenly rolled in front of my son’s teammate, Mickey O’ Donnel. With shouts of “kick it!” echoing(回响)across the playground, Mickey turned around and gave it everything he had. All around me the crowd erupted(沸腾). O’ Donnel had scored!

Then there was silence. Mickey had scored all right, but in the wrong goal, ending the game in a tie. For a moment there was a total hush. You see, Mickey has Down syndrome(综合症)and for him there is no such thing as a wrong goal. All goals were

celebrated by a happy hug from Mickey. He had even been known to hug the opposing players when they scored.

The silence was finally broken when Mickey, his face filled with joy, hugged my son tightly and shouted, “I scored! I scored! Everybody won! Everybody won!”For a moment I held my breath, not sure how my son would react. I need not have worried. I watched, through tears, as my son threw up his hand in the classic high-five salute and started chanting, “Way to go Mickey! Way to go Mickey!”Within moments both teams surrounded Mickey, joining in the chant and congratulating him on his goal.

Later that night, when my daughter asked who had won, I smiled as I replied,“It was a tie. Everybody won.”

Getting paid to talk about the World Cup is a great job. I’m not a football commenta tor (评论员), though ------ just an English teacher in Japan.

I came to Japan two years ago, and didn't think I would stay, but Japan has that effect on you. People often end up living here longer than they planned. I think it’s best to teach in a bigge r city where there are other foreigners to mix with, rather than a small town where English teachers often complain of feeling like a goldfish in a bowl. Many people choose to live in Tokyo, of course, which is good for the nightlife factor. But I’d say that for gene ral quality of living, cities of neither too large nor too small, like Sapporo where I live, are better choices.

I teach English privately, which means I’m my own boss. If you want to devote yourself to private teaching, it’s well worth doing a TEFL course first, because your lessons will be much better for it. The problem with private teaching is finding students; it took me a year to build up a full schedule of private lessons, so I started out teaching in schools part-time.

Most of my foreign friends here work full-time for big English conversation schools. The salary is fine to live on, but whether you can save money depends on how much going out and traveling you do here.

The schools are reluctant to take time off ------ even teachers with tickets for the England-Argentina game had trouble getting the day off.

There could be thousands of reasons why being a female is a hard thing. A lot of girls will probably talk about puberty (青春期) or make-up, but for me it’s different. The hardest thing about being a female would be the way we have to consider, especially as we are getting older and growing up.

I used to be a tomboy and a part of me still is .I love playing basketball and love the fact that I can beat a lot of guys when I play with them. However, the part that I don’t like is that my

parents complain to me about the way I dress and talk and the people I play with. They think a “lady” shouldn’t be playing this kind of sport and worst of all, she couldn’t be playing it with the boys.

Therefore, I changed the way I dressed and also started talking like a “lady”, but the part I didn’t change was playing with guys. Now a lot of people ask me why I play with guys when there are a lot of girls who can play basketball as well as those guys can. And they ask me why it is so important for me to play with guys. The answer I give them all the time is that when I play with a guy one-on-one and I win, then the same guys, who go around and tell everyone that girls are not built for playing, can’t say those words any more. And they even begin to think that they are wrong.

I think the hardest thing about being a female is that sometimes your parents expect you to act like a real “lady”, while you just want to do it in your own way. I just want to continue being who I am and I don’t want anybody to tell me that I shouldn’t be myself.

52. The underlined words in paragraph two probably mean______.

A. a strong boy

B. a girl who acts as a boy

C. a boy who looks like a girl

D. a boy who loves sports

53. From the passage we can learn that_______.

A. the writer’s parents were satisfied with what she did

B. the writer’s parents allowed her to play basketball with boys

C. the writer didn’t change anything

D. the writer still plays ball games with boys

54. The third paragraph mainly tells us______.

A. how she would like to play with boys

B. where she would like to go with boys

C. what she would like to do with boys

D. why she would like to play with boys

55.Which of the following is the writer’s opinion?

A. Being a real lady is what she desires.

B. Following parents’ opinions is right.

C. Being one’s own is important but hard.

D. Girls shouldn’t play with guys.

书面表达(possible version)

Dear editor,

The other day we had a heated discussion about whether middle school students should enter a net bar to surf online.

60%of the students think it should be forbidden. For one thing, surfing online or playing computer games is a waste of time. And it costs a lot of money to go to a net bar. For another, some students go to class during the day and surf online until deep into the night. As a result, they always feel sleepy in class. Besides, the content of some websites is harmful.

On the other hand, about 40% believe that the net is a good thing. On the net we can get some information useful in our study. The net can broaden our horizon, and through the Internet we can make many new friends. It can also help us to improve our skill in operating the computer. Of course, we should control ourselves while surfing online.

Such is our discussion about the question.
