Even in the best and most loving of times, families can feel impossibly confined(受限制的). Teens are irritable and furious. Parents are annoying and embarrassing. For Esther and her daughter Chaya, the tiny novel coronavirus changed all that.

Esther was born in Wuhan--a dynamic and culturally rich place that she deeply loves--but moved to the US During the winter holiday, they went to Wuhan to visit Esther's parents. Gradually at first, then more frequently, they noticed face masks on city streets. To be safe, they wore their own masks and stopped going to public gatherings. Then, suddenly the city was on lockdown. No one could leave. Their reservations home on a China Southern airlines flight were worthless. "I feared for my daughter's life," said Esther. "If it got worse, there could be chaos. She doesn't speak much Chinese."

For days, Esther repeatedly called and emailed for help. It was nonstop. She stayed online, checking all the time. Chaya felt distressed and helpless. It's awful seeing her mother go through that--without having anything she could do to help in the hotel.

Their luck changed with one email. For the 1,000 Americans stuck in Wuhan, there were 230 available seats on one outbound flight, it said. Esther bought two $1,100 seats. After a 12-hour wait at the airport, they got clearance to leave, and arrived at March Air Force Base, where they were isolated in two small connected rooms with a shared bath for two weeks. There were daily medical checkups, twice-daily temperature checks and a 10 a.m. briefing(简报). But there was no WiFi, TV or friends. For emotional support, Esther phoned her husband Haim, an engineering manager for Uber, and their two other children, aged 13 and 11.

Now home, they are basking in(沉浸于) the thrill of phone calls, TV interviews and a caring community. They've gotten little sleep. Suitcases remain unpacked. But anyhow, they have survived not just the outbreak of a virus but the unforgettable experience of mother-daughter togetherness.

B. Their infection of the virus

On November 7, Lewis Pugh completed a one-kilometer swim in the freezing waters of King Edward Cove, off South Georgia in Antarctica. He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and Speedo !

Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas, working to protect these ecosystems with their large diversity of marine life. When asked why he doesn't wear a wetsuit(防寒泳衣), Pugh says, "I ask world leaders to do everything they can to protect our oceans. Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I'm asking them to be courageous, I must also be. Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message."

It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one-kilometer swim in Antarctica where the water averaged about 1.6 degrees Celsius. He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle control to drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.

Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters. Even expert swimmers who are unused to freezing water can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced by the body. Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.

This is not the first time that Pugh has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007, he swam one kilometer in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica's Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.

28. Why did Lewis Pugh swim without a wetsuits ?

A. To show his bravery.

B. To swim faster.

C. To build up his body.

D. To have overnight fame.

29. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refer to'?

A. His body temperature.

B. His body

C. The water.

D. The water temperature.

30. What's Pugh's advice about swimming in freezing waters?

A. One should be expert at swimming.

B. One must be used to long-distance swimming.

C. One should be ready to take on challenges.

D. One must be adequately prepared for it.

31. What may be the best title for the text?

A. Lewis Pugh: achieving the impossible

B. How to survive a swim in cold waters

C. Lewis Pugh: swimming for a cause

D. How to prepare for extreme swimming

BEIJING -- IMAX, 3D, 5G and VR -- These were dominant themes at the 10th Beijing International Film Festival that concluded on Saturday.

"5G together with other technologies like cloud computing, big data and artificial intelligence are going to shape the film industry in China," said Zhang Wei, director of the China Film Science and Technology Research Institute.

"From black-and-white movies to color films, from 2D to 3D and IMAX, the film industry has seen multiple revolutions and changes upon the emergence and upgrading of film-related technologies," noted Chen Sicheng, a Chinese movie director.

In 2010, when the American science fiction movie "Avatar" was screened in China, tickets were snapped up and cinemas were overflowing with audiences. The Chinese market for 3D films has been growing ever since.

China has introduced favorable policies for the application of 5G, AR, MR and other emerging technologies in the film industry, according to film industry insiders at the festival.

"5G technology is going to revolutionize the whole film industry. Cloud transmission, real-time rendering(实时成像), intelligent distribution, efficient data capturing and collaborative(协作的) production in different locations around the world will be the new normal," said Hu Zhifeng, vice president of the Beijing Film Academy.

It took China, now the world's second-largest film market, less than 10 years to grow its box office revenue from 1 billion yuan (about $145.66 million) to over 60 billion yuan.

Andre Morgan, producer of Oscar-winning film "Million Dollar Baby," said China has made a significant leap in its film industry.

"Both its selection of themes and the leveraging(杠杆) of special effects have reached world standards. In fact, there is not much difference between China and Hollywood in the level of film production, and China has become a world-class film production center," he said.

Sun Jiashan, an associate researcher of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, pointed out that the popularity of many Chinese-made movies including "Wolf Warrior 2" and "The Wandering Earth" over recent years has proven the huge potential in China's growing film market.

"Compared with Hollywood, there are not many box office blockbusters(一鸣惊人的事物) among made-in-China movies. But China is on the right track by attracting more experts in the field and continuing to optimize(优化) its systems and policies for the film industry," said Feng Wei, vice president of the Asia-Pacific region and president of the Greater China region of the Motion Picture Association of America.

32. Which of the following may replace the underlined word in the passage?

A. busy

B. crowded

C. bored

D. satisfied

A. To congratulate on their success.

B. To show his respect for them.

D. To prove his idea that China’s film market has a promising future.

34. Which may be the best title of the passage?

A. New technologies empower China’s film industry.

B. Domestic film industry booms in China.

C. China’s film market has grown into the largest one in the world.

How to Remember What You Read

Reading is important, but the next important step is making sure that you remember what you've read!

36 You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tips for remembering what you read.

Are you confused?

If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won't be able to remember what you read. 37 . If you don't understand what you're reading, how would you remember it? There are a few things you can do- use a dictionary; look up the difficult words; consult a teacher...

Are you connected?

Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away. 38 How willing are you to make the connections happen?

Read it; hear it; be it!

Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some character into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He'd make faces in the mirror and change his voice for each character. 39

40

How often do you read? If you read frequently, you'll likely have an easier time with remembering what you're reading and what you've read. As you make reading a regular part of your life, you'll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text better. You'll learn to enjoy literature---as you remember what you read!

A. What's your motivation?

B. Practice makes perfect.

C. It's a bit like reading a foreign language.

D. Marking helps you remember what you read.

E. Memory is sometimes a tricky thing.

F. But other books require a bit more work on your part.

G. You can do the same thing when you are reading the text!

第二节书面表达(满分25分)

I fancy reading, so I love many different kinds of books very much, because they not only broaden my horizons but also give me inspiration.

Up to now I have read a lot of books, for example, magazines, novels and storybooks and so son. But one of the books that I fancy is My Life Story. It was created by an American writer --- Helen Keller in 1902, who was a blind, deaf and dumb person. In the book, she wrote that she had not been able to see, hear or speak since the age of one year and seven months, which made her very sad. At the age of seven she knew Miss Sullivan, her good teacher. Helen was getting happier every day. Then, Miss Sullivan helped her learn how to write English words. At first, Miss Sullivan wrote some words on Helen’s hands with her own fingers again and again. Helen was a very diligent girl, due to which she tried as much as possible to remember words. After that, she wrote and published many famous works. My Life Story is one of them. My Life Story described her hard struggle to become an outstanding writer and educationalist of the world. It shows us a universal truth: “Nothing is difficult if you put your heart into it!” This is why I like it.
