AWe spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. With the car full of flowers we were going home. On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard (柜厨) outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow. “Buy it, ” my wife said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof rack. I’ve always wanted one like that.”What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer; and the cupboard was tied on the roof rack. It was six feet long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too. In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea. After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake, I wonder?” In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.“Right, sir, ” he said. “Do you need any more help?”I was a bit puzzled. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You have been very kind. I live just on the road.”He was staring at our car, first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. “Well, well, ” he said, laughing. “It’s a cupboard you’ve got there! We thought it was something else.”My wife began to laugh. The truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer. “Yes, it’s a cupboard, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.1. In fact the husband _______ the cupboard.A. would like very much to buyB. badly wantedC. was glad to have boughtD. would rather not buy2. Other drivers thought they were _______.A. carrying a cupboard to the churchB. sending flowers to the churchC. carrying nothing but a piece of furnitureD. going to attend a funeral(葬礼) at the church3. The police will be more polite to those who are _______.A. driving in gathering darknessB. in great sorrow (悲痛)C. driving with wild glowers in the carD. carrying furniture4. What did the husband think of this matter?A. It was very strange.B. He felt ashamed of it.C. He took great pride in it.D. He was puzzled at it.BMy father was a foreman of a sugar-cane plantation in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. My first job was to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fields. I would walk behind an ox, guiding him with a broomstick. For $ 1 a day, I worked eight hours straight, with no food breaks. It was very tedious work, but it prepared me for life and taught me many lasting lessons. Because the plantation owners were always watching us, I had to be on time every day and work as hard as I could. I’ve never been late for any job since. I also learned about being respectful and faithful to the people you work for. More important, I earned my pay; it never entered my mind to say I was sick just because I didn’t want to work.I was only six years old, but I was doing a man’s job. Our family needed every dollar we could make because my father never earned more than $ 18 a week. Our homewas a three-room wood shack with a dirty floor and no toilet. Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money to help my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters. This gave me self-esteem(自尊心), one of the most important things a person can have. When I was seven, I got work at a golf course near our house. My job was to stand down the fairway and spot the balls as they landed, so the golfers could find them. Losing a ball meant you were fired, so I never missed one. Some nights I would lie in bed and dreamt of making thousands of dollars by playing golf and being able to buy a bicycle. The more I dreamed, the more I thought. Why not? I made my first golf club out of guava limb(番石榴树枝) and a piece of pipe. Then I hammered an empty tin can into the shape of a ball. And finally I dug two small holes in the ground and hit the ball back and forth. I practiced with the same devotion and intensity. I learned working in the field —except now I was driving golf balls with club, not oxen witha broomstick.5. The writer’s first job was _______.A. to stand down the fairway at a golf courseB. to watch over the sugar-cane plantationC. to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fieldsD. to spot the balls as they landed so the golfers could find them6. The word “tedious” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _______.A. difficultB. boringC. interestingD. unusual7. _______ gave the writer serf-esteem.A. Having a family of eight peopleB. Owning his own golf courseC. Bringing money back home to help the familyD. Helping his father with the work on the plantation8. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. He wanted to be a successful golfer.B. He wanted to run a golf course near his house.C. He was satisfied with the job he got on a plantation.D. He wanted to make money by guiding oxen with a broomstick.CAt the time, I would go out in the evening with my parents. But this time I had borrowed a bicycle from a friend of mine. I didn’t know why, but once I was on my own bicycle, a kind of free feeling flooded through me. The faster I rode, the faster I wanted to go! Far ahead, I rode as if my life depended on it, head down, hands grasping the handbars. I meant to get to Jinghai Bar as fast as I could...Oh! My hands! Don’t come any closer... Don’t touch me! That poor doctor just coul dn’t get my gloves off. Each time he took a step towards me, I broke into painful shouting. Much later, I discovered that I had crashed heavily with another bicycle, and I hadn’t spoken one word of sense for at least three hours! After some time, my mother arrived at the hospital, her face as white as a sheet, and gave me a hug, only then did the doctor begin to stitch(缝合) my head wound, not only did he merrily cut off a long lock of my hair, but used no anaesthetic(麻药) either! Later, I seemed to hear faraway voices saying that my right hand was broken. I almost burst into tears. How would I ever play the piano again?9. On her way to Jinghai, the writer felt _______.A. nervousB. comfortableC. light-heartedD. upset10. Why did the writer ride a bicycle to Jinghai Bar that evening?A. Because she wanted to attend a party on time.B. Because she wanted to meet her friend who was waiting for her there.C. Because she just wanted, to join some of her friends and drink some wine.D. We are not quite sure about what she was really going there for.11. What did the writer think of the doctor?A. Friendly.B. Cruel.C. Hardworking.D. Kind.12. One thing is sure, that is, before she was wounded she _______.A. often went to Jinghai Bar with her friendsB. liked playing the pianoC. didn’t like any doctors at allD. would burst into tears whenshe was in troubleDWhen Johnson called again, the manager received him very politely. “That is a most remarkable oil you brought us, Mr Johnson,” he said. Johnson nodded his smooth, dark head. That was something he knew very well. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” the manager admitted. Johnson nodded again. “No?” he said politely. Then he added, “But I think you will, sir. A very great deal of it.” He appeared to think for a moment. “I think you will find it will be on sale seven, perhaps, eight years from now.” He smiled. The manager thought that was uncertain. He said, “It is better than our fish oils.I admit that.” “So I am told, sir,” agreed Johnson.“Have you any plans to produce it yourself, Mr Johnson?”Johnson smiled again. “Would I be showing it to you if I had?”“We might add some chemicals to one of our own fish oils,” said the manager.“It would be expensive to do that, even if you could.” Johnson said gently. “Besides,” he added, “I am told that this oil will be much cheaper than your best fish oils. Cheaper than any vegetable oil, in fact.”“Perhaps,” said the manager. “Well, I suppose you want to make an arrangement, Mr Johnson, Shall we discuss it?”“Of course,” said Johnson. “There are two ways of dealing with a situation of this sort. The usual one is to prevent it altogether or at least to delay it as long as possible. That is, of course, the best way,” The manager nodded. He knew plenty about all that.“But I am so sorry for you, because, you see, that is not possible this time.” The manager had his doubts, but all he said was an inquiring(asking), “Oh?”“The other way,” continued Johnson, “is to produce yourself before the trouble starts.”13. The manager thought of adding chemicals to the fish oil to make it ________.A. cheaper than the new oilB. more quicklyC. more expensiveD. as good as the new oil14. Johnson’s new oil would be ________.A. more expensive than fish oil, but betterB. less expensive, and betterC. less expensive, but not goodD. more expensive, and not so good15. Johnson showed his new oil to the manager because he wanted ________.A. to produce it himselfB. to prevent it being producedC. to be paid not to produce itD. the manager to produce it第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

ATom Brennan was working in a Philadelphia office building when he noticed a black bag. The bag contained a book. This chance discovery ended a 12-day search by the Library Company of Philadelphia for a historical treasure-----a 120-page diary kept 190 years ago by Deborah Logan, “a woman who knew everybody in her day,” James Green ,the librarian told the magazine American Libraries. Most of the diary is a record of big events in Philadelphia. It also includes a description of British soldiers burning Washington .D. C in the war of 1812. She describes President James Madison on horseback as “perfectly shaking with fear”during the troubled days. George Washington, she writes, mistook her for the wife of a French man, and praised her excellent English. The adventure of the lost book began September 4 when Cory Luxmoore arrived from England to deliver the diary of his ancestor to the Library Company, which he and his wife considered to be the best home for the diary.Green told American Libraries he had the diary in his possession “about five minutes”when Luxmoore took it back because he had promised to show it to one other person. On returning to his hotel after showing the precious book to Green, Luxmoore was shocked to realize that he had left it in the taxi.Without any delay, Green began calling every taxi company in the city, with no luck, “I’ve felt sick since then,” Luxmoore told reporters.According to Green, no one has yet learned how the diary came to the office building .Tom Brennan received a reward of 1,000. Philadelphia gained another treasure for its history, and Luxmoore told reporters, “It’s wonderful news. I’m on high”.1.This article mainly tells about the story of _____A. a lost diaryB. Deborah LoganC. Cory LuxmooreD. the Library Company2.From the text, we learn that the diary is now owned by_____A. Tom BrennanB. an unknown personC. a Philadelphia magazineD. the Library Company of Philadelphia3.Philadelphia is thought to be the best home for the diary because_____.A. it was written in PhiladelphiaB. it tells stories about PhiladelphiaC. people in the city are interested in old thingsD. the British and the Americans once fought in PhiladelphiaBIf there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The nature of what is news may changes. What basically makes news is what affects our lives----and the big political stories , the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affe ct our lives, like genetic engineering . In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do ------as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted electronically from the Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that is how it will happen in future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read-----say, sport and international news.I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresee that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.4. What is the best title for the passage?A. The Best Way to Get NewsB. The Changes of MediaC. Make Your Own NewspaperD. The Future of Newspaper5.In the writer’s opinion, in the future, ______A. newspapers will not be printed in publishing houses any longerB. more big political affairs , wars and disasters will make newsC. newspapers will cover more scientific researchD. more and more people will read newspapers6. What will probably be in the newspaper made by yourself ?A. Sports and international newsB. A menu of all the newsC. The most important newsD. What you are interested in7.From the passage , we can infer______.A. newspapers will win the competition among the different mediaB. newspaper will stay with us together with other mediaC. television will take the place of newspaperD. the writer believe some media will die out8.The word “feed off” in the last paragraph means_____.A. depend onB. live onC. fight withD. kill offCTelepathy: mind-to-mind contactTelepathy is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste ). It’s an instinct(本能) which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct, we’re using resources within the unconscious(潜意识)mind. When the resources of two persons’unconscious minds link together into the same frequency, we call it Telepathy. We can either send or receive Telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you, you are most likely to be better at sending. You can easily put your abilities to the test. Think of somebody and will him or her to contact(联系)you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phone rings, try “feeling” who is contacting you. Don’t guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However, if neither of this work for you, that doesn’t mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream about each other and find that their dreams had a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other’s unconscious mind.Telepathy and Relationships. The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to th e other’s mind, especially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the other’s mind through time spent together; the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child’s eagerly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this is the person who always want to be there for them, and the mother’s deep desire to protect her child from harm.9.Telepathy turns up when we______.A. sense a close friend in dangerB. use the five senses togetherC. recall things from our memoryD. think of a stranger10.You’re better at sending than receiving Telepathy if you_____.A. can feel your mom is in dangerB. receive a friend’s call as yo u wishC. can tell who knocks at your doorD. dream of a friend dreaming of you11.Which is NOT the way to help people gain Telepathy?A. Help them have a strong desire to communicateB. Help them link up their unconscious mindsC. Let them spend much time togetherD. Separate them all the time.DWith the possible exception of equal rights, perhaps the most heated argument across the United States today is the death penalty. Many argue that it is an effective deterrent(震慑)to murder, while others think there is no enough proof that the death penalty reduces the number of murders. The argument advanced by those opposed to the death penalty is that it is cruel and inhuman punishment, that it is the mark of a bad society and finally that it is of questionable effectiveness as a deterrent to crime anyway. In our opinion, the death penalty is a necessary action. Throughout recorded history there have always been those peculiar persons in every society who made terrible crimes such as murder. But some are more dangerous than others. For example , it is one thing to take the life of another in time of blind anger, but quite another to coldly plan and carry out the murder of one or more people in the style of abutcher .Thus, murder, like all other crimes, is a matter of different degree. While it could be argued with some reason that the criminal in the first instance should be merely kept from society, such should not be the fate of the latter type murderer. The value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion. But the majority of people believe that the death penalty protects them. Their belief is proved by the fact that the death penalty prevents murder. For example, from 1954 to 1963, when the death penalty was carried out from time to time in California, the murder rate remained between three and four murders for each 100,000 population. Since 1964 the death penalty has been done only once, and the murder rate has risen to 10.4 murders for each 100,000 population. The s harp climb in the state’s murder rate, which began when killings stopped, does not happen by chance. It certainly shows that the death penalty does deter many murderers. If the law about death penalty is vetoed(否决), some people will be murdered-----some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect. This is really a life or death matter. The lives of thousands of people must be protected.12.The main purpose of this passage is to _______.A. speak for the majorityB. support a vetoC. speak ill of the governmentD. argue for the value of the death penalty13.Which of the following is among the heated arguments across the USA besides deathpenalty?A. Air pollutionB. The war against Iraq.C. Equal rightsD. They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.“Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?” the el egant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. “I’m from Mississippi too.”Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.“They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,” Welty said. “I didn’t know what my New York friends were thinking.”Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi.“My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added. “And I said: ‘Now you know. Th ese are the people that make me write them.’”Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.“I don’t make them up,” she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. “I don’t have to.”Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story.25. What happened when Welty was with her friends at the cafe?A. Two strangers joined her.B. Her childhood friends came in.C. A heavy rain ruined the dinner.D. Some people held a party there.26. They live in big cities.B. They are mostly women.C. They come from real life.D. They are pleasure seekers.CLaws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial education got lost in the ‘wash up’. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(减法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum. As the Personal Finance Education Group (PFEG) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power. PFEG predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education whi le at school.”The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.28. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________.A. the author complains about the school educationB. pupils should not be taught to add up and subtractC. students have been taught to manage their financesD. laws on financial education have been effectively carried out29. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _________.A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket moneyB. promote the connection of schools and familiesC. ask the government to dismiss the parliamentD. appeal for the curriculum of financial education30. According to PFEG, ___________.A. it is easy to keep good habits longB. teenagers spend their money as plannedC. parents are willing to pay the debt for their kidsD. it will be in trouble if the teenagers are left alone31. A poll is mentioned to ___________.A. stress the necessity of the curriculum reformB. show the seriousness of the financial recessionC. make the readers aware of burden of the parentsD. illustrate some people are strongly against the proposalDImagine a mass of floating waste is two times the size of the state of Texas. Texas has a land area of more than 678 000 square kilometers. So it might be difficult to imagine anything twice as big.All together, this mass of waste flowing in the North Pacific Ocean is known as the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. It weighs about 3 500 000 tons. The waste includes bags, bottles and containers—plastic products of all kinds. The eastern part of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch is about l 600 kilometers west of California. The western part is west of the Hawaiian Islands and east of Japan. The area has been described as a kind of oceanic desert, with light winds and slow moving water currents. The water moves so slow that garbage from all over the world collects there. In recent years, there have been growing concerns about the floating garbage and its effect on sea creatures and human health. Scientists say thousands of animals get trapped in the floating waste, resulting in death or injury. Even more die from a lack of food or water after swallowing pieces of plastic. The trash can also make animals feel full, lessening their desire to eat or drink. The floating garbage also can have harmful effects on people. There is an increased threat of infection of disease from polluted waste, and from eating fish that swallowed waste. Divers can also get trapped in the plastic. Its existence first gained public attention in l997. That was when racing boat captain and oceanographer Charles Moore and his crew sailed into the garbage while returning from a racing event. Five years earlier, another oceanographer learned of the trash after a shipment of rubber duckies got lost at sea. Many of those toys are now part of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. In August,2009,a team from the University of California,San Diego became the latest group to travel to it. They were shocked by the amount of waste they saw. They gathered hundreds of sea creatures and water samples to measure the garbage patch’s effect on ocean environment.32. How did the writer introduce the topic of the passage?A. By giving an example.B. By listing the facts.C. By telling a story.D. By giving a comparison.33. What do we know about the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch?A. It is made up of various kinds of plastic products.B. It is a solid mass of floating waste materials.C. It lies l60 000 kilometers east of California.D. It is described as a kind of oceanic desert.34. Why do people pay attention to the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch?A. Because it may prevent the flow of ocean water.B. Because the polluted plastic articles will move up the food chain.C. Because it may be from an island in the pacific.D. Because ships may be trapped in the floating waste.35.The purpose of writing this passage is to____________.A. warn people of the danger to travel in the pacificB. analyze what caused the waste patch in the pacificC. give advice on how to recycle waste in the oceanD. introduce the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch三.七选五阅读 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
