(The Result of the Falling US Dollar)Like a ticking time bomb, the falling dollar has grabbed the attention of Japan and West Germany, forcing them to consider adopting economic polices the United States advocates. The U.S. government wants the dollar to fall because as the dollar declines in value against the yen and Deutsche mark, U.S. good becomes cheaper. U.S. companies then sell more at home and abroad, and U.S. trade deficit declines. Cries for trade protection abate, and the global free-trade system is preserved. Then, the cheaper dollar makes it cheaper for many foreign investors to snap up U.S. stocks. That prompts heavy buying from abroad—especially from Japan. Also, if the trade picture is improving, that means U.S. companies eventually will be more competitive. Consequently, many investors are buying shares of export-oriented U.S. companies in anticipation of better profits in the next year or so. But that is a rather faddish notion right now; if corporate earnings are disappointing in interest rates, the stock market rally could stall.Improving U.S. competitiveness means a decline in another’s competitiveness.Japan and West Germany are verging on recession. Their export-oriented economies are facing major problems. Japan is worried about the damage the strong yen will do to Japanese trade. West Germany is also worried. Share prices in Frankfurt plummeted this past week. Bonn is thought to be considering a cut in interest rates to boost its economy.Could the falling dollar get out of hand? If the dollar falls too far, investors might lose confidence in U.S. investments—especially the government bond market. The money to finance the federal budget and trade deficits could migrate elsewhere. Inflation could flare up, too, since Japanese and German manufacturers will eventually pass along price hikes—and U.S. companies might follow suit to increase their profit margins. The U.S. federal Reserve then might need to step in and stabilize the dollar by raising interest rates. And higher interest rates could cause the U.S. economy to slow down and end the Wall Street Rally.Worried about these side effects, Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcher has said the dollar has fallen far enough. What is the equilibrium level? Probably near where it is or slightly lower. It all depends on when the U.S. trade deficit turns around or if investors defect from U.S. Treasury Bonds. “It requires a good deal of political patience on the part of the U.S. Congr ess,” says Dr. Cline, “And there must be an expectation of patience on the part of private investors. The chance are relatively good that we will avoid an investor break or panic.”1. What is the main idea of this passage?[A]. The impression of the falling U.S. dollar.. The prosperity of the U.S. economy would disappear.. The U.S. economy might face serious problems.[C]. Investors might lose confidence in U.S. investments.[D].Inflation could flare up.Vocabulary1. ticking 滴答作响的2. grab 抓住3. abate 减弱4. snap up 争购,抢购5. heavy buying 大量买进6. export-oriented 以出口为方向的7. in anticipation of 期待,预期8. faddish 一时流行的9. spree 无节制的疯狂行为10. buying spree 狂购乱买11. plummet 垂直落下,骤然跌落,暴跌12. stall 停滞13. verge 处于……边缘14. verging on recession 正处于衰退的边缘15. boost 振兴,吹捧16. bond market 债券市场17. flare up 突然闪耀,发火,爆发18. hike 提高,增加19. follow suit 照着做,跟出同花色的牌20. profit margin 利润幅度21. step in 介入22. rally 繁荣23. equilibrium 平衡,均势24. defect 逃跑,开小差25. break or panic 崩溃或大恐慌难句译注1. cries for trade protection 贸易保护的呼声2. the global free-trade system 全球自由贸易体系3. that is a rather faddish notion right now 只是一时流行的概念4. get out of hand 失控5. 手惰市安逸阳光实验学校高考英语二轮专题复习提升精选:阅读理解1.In a recently published book, I came across some exercises with interesting names such as fishbone diagrams, lotus flowers and clustering. As I used these exercises in my classes, I noticed that students were interested. They said more and wrote more. They enjoyed expressing their ideas and sharing them in groups. They were no longer passively waiting for the bell , but actively taking part in the lesson. I find that creativity can act as a way to increase participation and improve fluency.Creativity has become a popular word in recent years. Scholarsin arts, psychology, business, education and science are all working to get a deeper understanding of it. Robert J. Stemberg is a creativity specialist and Yale professor of psychology. He defines creativity a s “the ability to produce work that is both new (original) and appropriate(applicable to the situation )”. This definition is useful, as we want our students to use language in a new way and to use it correctly and properly. Mot scholars say there are two types of creativity: big “C” creativity and small “c” creativity. Big “C” creativity refers to genius level thinking that results in artistic masterpieces and scientific breakthroughs. Small “c” creativity refers to everyday level thinking that can be used in any situation our emphasis is on the latter. While it goes without saying that any of our students could go on to be the next Picasso or Edison, our aim is to help students produce more ideas and use language in a new way.47. The underlined words “waiting for the bell ” in the first paragraph probably means______.A. longing for a phone callB. hoping to have abellC. expecting the end of the classD. waiting to speak in the class48. Far too many. This is Life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演)and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its best moments. We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families always making ourselves believe that this style of life is merely a temporary state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then, at 60 or 65, we are suddenly presented with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize that all those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life.In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English:“Have a nice day” they speak slowly and seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us, in effect, to enjoy the moment: to value this very day.How often do we say to ourselves, "I'll take up horse-riding (or golf, or sailing) as soon as I get a higher position," only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position. When I first became a reporter I knew a man who gave up a verywell paid respectable job at the Daily Telegraph to go and edit a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was astonished by what appeared to me to be his completely abnormal (反常的) mental state. How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central London for a small local area?I wanted to know. Now I am a little older and possibly wiser, I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under continual pressure. He lived inan unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sittingon Southern Region trains.43. No, I mean everything, not just houses and shops and grown-ups, but colors and flowers and journeys, especially journeys which seemed endless. “Are we there yet, Daddy?”Funfairs (游乐场) were huge things that spread for miles around you with noise and lights and exciting danger. Rainy days at home when you were ill seemed to last for ever. Being a grown-up yourself was an unthinkable distant possibility. Every sound was louder, every game was grander, every pain unbearable. As I’ve grown old, life has become smaller. Tastes have dulled. Surprises have turned into shocks. Days go by unnoticed. How can I regain childhood when it was an illusion?I have only one repeatable and wonderful way and even in this way I can regain only part of that larger world. I can play upon the stage like a child and make the crowd laugh and laugh with them, sometimes helplessly like a child, and then, even though I’m a sixty-one-year-old man, I can almost catch the colors and sounds and stillness of those bigger years when I was little.39. How does the author feel about his childhood?A. It was endless.B. It was unpleasant.C. He is glad that it is over.D. He misses it as a grown-up40. Jennifer Funkhouser, academic adviser for the Department of Rangeland Ecology and Management, directs this four-week summer program designed to increase understanding of research and its career potential.Several considerations go into selecting students, including grades, school involvement and interest in science and agriculture. And many students come from poorer school districts, Funkhouser says, “This is their chance to learn techniques and do experiments they never would have a chance to do in high school.”Warner Ervin of Houston is interested in animal science and learned how to tell male from female mosquitoes(蚊子).His adviser, Craig Coates, studies the genes of mosquitoes that allow them to fight against malaria and yellow fever. Coates thought this experience would be fun and helpful to the high school students. The agricultural research at A&M differs from stereotypes. It’s “molecul ar(分子)science on the cutting edge,” Funkhouser says. The program broadened students’ knowledge. Victor Garcia of Rio Grande City hopes to become a biology teacher and says he learned a lot about chemistry from the program. At the end of the program, the students presented papers ontheir research. They’re also paid $600 for their work-another way this program differs from others, which often charge a fee.Fourteen students got paid to learn that science is fun, that agriculture is a lot more than milking and plowing and that research can open many doors.35. The research program is chiefly designed for _______.A. high school advisers from HoustonB. college students majoring in agricultureC. high school students from different placesD. researchers at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences36. It can be inferred from the text that the students in poorer areas ___________ .A. had little chance to go to collegeB. could often take part in the programC. found the program useful to their futureD. showed much interest in their high school experiments37. The unde rlined expression “on the cutting edge” in paragraph5 means “on the most___ position”.A. importantB. favorableC. astonishingD. advanced5.When a Swedish ship that sank in 1628 was recovered from the port of Stockholm, historians and scientists were overjoyed with the chance to examine the remains of the past. The ship construction showed how ships were built and operated during the seventeenth century. In this way, artifacts, objects made by human beings, provided a picture of daily life almost 400 years ago.Underwater archaeology-the study of ships, aircraft and human settlements that have sunk under large bodies of water-is really a product of the last 50 years. The rapid growth of this new area of study has occurred because of the invention of better divingequipment .Besides the Swedish ship wreck(残骸),underwater archaeologists have made more exciting discoveries such as the 5000-year-old boats in the Mediterranean Sea.Underwater archaeology can provide facts about the past. In ancient ports all over the world are ships sunken in the past 6,000 years. There are also sunken settlements in seas and lakes telling of people’s way of life and their systems of trade in ancient times. Underwater archaeologists want to study these objects to add to the world's knowledge of history, but they have to fight two enemies. One enemy is treasure hunters who dive for ancientartifacts that they can sell to collectors. Once sold, these objects are lost to experts. The second enemy is dredgingmachines(挖掘机)often used to repair ports. These machines destroy wrecks and artifacts or bury them deeper under sand and mud. By teaching the public about the importance of underwater “museums” of the past, archaeologists are hoping to get support for laws to protect underwater treasures.31. What purpose does Paragraph 1 serve in the passage?A.To provide background information of the topicB.To attract readers' attention to the topicC.To use an example to support the topicD.To offer basic knowledge of the topic32. The aim of underwater archaeology is to _____.A. exploit water bodiesB. search for underwater lifeC. study underwater artifactsD. examine underwater environment33. Underwater archaeologists are worried because_____.A.sea hunters have better diving equipmentB.their knowledge of world history is limitedC.dredging machines cause damage to the portsD.sold artifacts can hardly be regained for research34. What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To introduce a young branch of learning.B.To discuss the scientists’ problems.C.To explain people’s way of life in the past.D.To describe the sunken ships.6.All around the world, shoppers flock to Wal-Mart to buy everything. In Texas, they come for another reason: to see the windturbine(涡轮机), which supplies 5% of the store’s electricity. It along with other facilities, such as exterior walls coated with heat-reflective paint, makes this Wal-Mart a green giant. The laws of economics suggest that Wal-Mart, with 5, 200 stores worldwide, influences everything including the price of all kinds of goods. It throws its weight behind environmental responsibility, and the impact could be amazing. “One little change in product packaging could save 1, 500 trees,” says Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott.“If everybody saves 1, 500 trees or 50 barrels of oil, at the end of the day you have made a huge difference.”Scott wants Wal-Mart to do its part too. He has promised to cut the existing greenhouse-gas emissions(排放)over the next few years and promised to construct new stores that are more efficient. He wants Wal-Mart’s fleet of more than 7, 000 trucks to get twice as many miles per gallon by 2015. Factories that show Wal-Mart they’re cutting air pollution will get preferential treatment in the supply chain. Wal-Mart says it’s working with consumer-product manufacturers to reduce their packaging and will reward them if they do so.Some people may doubt it is a bid to attract attention from Wal-Mart’s controversial labor and healt h-insurance practices. Butit’s not just window dressing, because Wal-Mart sees profits in going green. Scott says, “This is a business philosophy, not a social philosophy. We don’t go where we don’t think there’s a great interest in change.”Like Bill Gates, who started his charitable foundation, Scott happens to be promoting Wal-Mart’s image at a time when his company’s reputation is declining. He acknowledges that he launched the plan partly to shield (保护)Wal-Mart from bad press about its contribution to global warming. “By doing what we’re doing today, we avoid the headline risks that are going to come for people who did not do anything,” he says. “At some point businesses will be held responsible for the action they take.” Meanwhile, should Wal-Mart succeed in shrinking its environmental footprint and lowering prices for green products, both the planet and the company will profit.68. We can infer from the passage that ______.A. Lee Scott is Wal-Mart’s CEOB. there are 5, 200 stores in the worldC. Wal-Mart has a great influence on the world marketD. Wal-Mart has more than 7, 000 trucks all over the world69. What will Wal-Mart probably do in the future?A. Reduce air pollution in its present stores.B. Give favorable treatment to its consumers.C. Ask the factories to reduce their packaging.D. Demand the fleet of trucks to use more fuel than before.70. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Provide the background of the green plan.B. Stress the purpose of Wal-Mart’s green plan.C. Present the risk that Wal-Mart is facing nowadays.D. Analyze the similarity between Bill Gates and Scott.试卷答案1.CDBB2.BCBC3.DBADBD5.BCDA6.CAB。

Strangely, it is in a town that calls itself Butterfly U.S.A., Pacific Grove, California. The town of Pacific Grove loves the butterflies. Every year they have a parade (游行) and hundreds of children dress up as butterflies. Monarch butterflies are the town mascot. Tourism is very important, and many people come to see the butterflies. The butterflies are good for the development of the town.In 1981 there were so many butterflies it looked like it was raining butterflies. Tens of thousands of Monarchs stayed on tree branches near Pacific Grove. Now there are not so many. The building goes on a little bit at a time, and you don’t notice it day by day. Over time, you can see that there has been a lot of development. As new buildings go up, many trees are cut down. This reduces the natural homes for the butterflies.Monarchs travel hundreds of miles each year, returning to the same woods, often to the same trees. The female Monarchs need milkweed to lay their eggs; the males will follow the females.Millions of Monarchs have traveled regularly along the same path for thousands of years. They start their trip in the mountains of Mexico and travel to the middle part of America. If the woods where the butterflies live are destroyed, the whole species (物种) could be lost. There have been Monarch butterflies along the coast of California for as long as man can remember, but no one is sure how much longer they will last.56.Which of the following is true about Monarch butterflies in Pacific GroveA.They have disappear.B.They come to stay every year.C.They help develop the town’s tourism.D.They give a name to Pacific Grove.57.The unde rlined word “mascot〞in Paragraph 2 probably refers to ________.A.a new type of butterflyB.an insect believed to bring good luckC.a parade organized by Pacific GroveD.a special dress for children in Pacific Grove 58.What problem do Monarch butterflies face now A.New buildings take up their living space.B.There has been too much rain in recent years.C.Their natural homes are destroyed by tourism.D.They have to travel a long distance to get home. 59.Where do Monarch butterflies start their trip to Pacific GroveA.From Central America. B.From the West Coast.C.From the West Coast. D.From Mexico.BIf there’s a child in your house who likes pixies(精灵),nature, or magic, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure is sure to be a hit. This beautifully animated film(动画片)is a first class production in every way, and features the familiar voices of Kristin Chenoweth, Anjelica Huston, Jane Horrocks, Lucy Liu, and Raven Symone. The movie offers up an adventure that's easy enough to follow, but complex enough to hold one's attention, and even throws in a nice little moral about friendship. What can I say I'm pleasantly surprised. The up-and-coming Mae Whitman voices Tinker Bell herself, a far more dynamic character than we encountered in Peter Pan. Though Tinker still possesses her fiery temper, it doesn't manifest itself immediately, and takes a backseat to this pixie's many good qualities. As it turns out, Tinker Bell is extremely skilled at tinkering〔修补〕, so she is a natural choice to build a special scepter(拐杖),for Pixie Hollow's Autumn Celebration. The scepter will hold the moonstone through which the light of the Blue Moon will pass, supplying Pixie Hollow with enough pixie dust for the year ahead. For days, Tinkers works hard on the perfect scepter design while her good friend Terrence does his best to assist. When Terrence accidentally breaks the Moon Stone, Tinker Bell "explodes" and sends him away. One of Tinker's more literal friends finds this extremely concerning, as she doesn't quite understand that the outburst was emotional rather than physical —very funny indeed. After hearing the legend of the lost treasure, Tinker Bell strikes out on her own to find a new Moon Stone. She faces many difficulties and meets new friends along the way, but when Terrence comes to the rescue at Tinker's darkest hour, she realizes the value of a truly loyal friend. Though the filmis engaging and offers a positive message to young viewers, it's the animation that makes Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure stand out. Pixie Hollow is an enchanting, visually stunning world basked in lush colors. It's so lovely, so detailed, so three-dimensional that you almost want to step inside.60.From the first paragraph, we can learn that .A.many famous actors acted important roles in the film B.the plot of the film is attractive and easy to understand C.the write feels surprised at the message of friendship in the filmD.the film Tinker Bill and the Lost Treasure may disappoint you if you love magic tales61.What’s the correct order of the following details a.Tinker Bell realizes the value of a truly loyal friend.b.Terrence breaks the Moon Stone by accident.c.Tinker Bell is determined to build a special scepter.d.Terrence comes to the rescue when Tinkers was in trouble.A.c b d a B.b c d a C.b c a d D.c d a b 62.In the writer’s opinion, the characteristics of Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure are the following EXCEPT .A.the attractive detailsB.the lively animation charactersC.the three-dimensional animationD.the moving love story between Tinker Bell and Terrence 63.The article picked from a website is a(n) .A.movie poster B.movie review C.introduction to a book D.person introductionCWhen a Filipino lady is to be married, she will be the busiest person in the scene. She wants her big day to be great and memorable because most Filipinos marry only once. The bride-to be, usually loses weight before her big day because of stress, Those who can afford to pay for a wedding planner are free from worries. But average Filipinos who have no wedding planner have many things to prepare. Most brides starts with the with the small details. The color or the designLadies are particular about color combinations. They will make sure that the flowers will perfectly match the dresses of the bride’s maids and the flower girls. The small flower worn by the wedding host is in perfect combination with the whole design. The souvenirs(纪念品)Most Filipino brides make their own wedding souvenirs to give away to their guests. They will buy the material and make the souvenirs themselves. They will spend their precious time to make them very attractive to their guests. They will be satisfied when their guests say,“Wow, I like it,〞To them, it’s worth the hard work.Preparing the invitations is a stressful job for the bride and the groom. They will starts with the listings of all possible guests. It’s stressful because if their budget is good only for50 people and the expected guests on the list is 100, there isa problem. Filipinos think their friends and relatives will feel bad if they do not receive an invitation; whether they can attend or not, they are expecting an invitation. Usually, the couple will stretch their budget for the extras just not to disappoint friends and relatives.64.Filipino ladies to be marred will .A.not have to worry B.have much work to doC.invite a wedding planner D.organize the wedding all by herself65.What can we infer from the passageA.The wedding host can wear any flower.B.The wedding souvenirs are usually expensiveC.A Filipino lady gets married only once because of stress.D.Even if a friend can’t attend a wedding, he still wants to receive an invitation.66.What’s the best title of the last paragraphA.The Wedding Invitations B.The Wedding DressC.The Wedding Budget D.The Wedding Problem 67.The writer wrote the passage to .A.tell us how to have a happy weddingB.tell us the Filipino wedding traditionC.teach us how to write wedding invitation cardsD.show us how a Filipino lady prepare for a weddingDSome people who find themselves unable to solve a problem react by just giving up . But it is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures. You may be sure that all young people go through the same difficult process that you are going through:meeting new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilities. If you are unhappy about something, face it. Try to state the problem in a few words, so that you will know exactlywhat you are up against. Then see if you can put your finger on the cause of your unhappiness. In many cases, we only “think〞there is no solution to a particular problem. But often we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack. For example, a boy wanted to be a debater. When he tried out for the debating team as a freshman , the coach thought he was hopeless .He was shy ; he had a high-pitched 〔音调〕voice ; and his posture 〔体态〕was poor . Although he was given little hope of success, he took advantage of very opportunity to debate. He studied successful speakers and sized up his own weaknesses and assets. Then he spent many hours learning all the facts on the topics for debate, and worked a developing good posture and at speaking clearly. By his junior year, he made the school debating team, and in his senior year he was on the winning team in his state. He achieved his goal because he had made a direct attack upon his problem.Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems, we have to be realistic in judging situations. Sometimes it is necessary to change either the tactics 〔策略〕or the goal .A boy who wants to be a great football player may be too light and not quite fast enough for football. In this situation, becoming a great football player may be an unreasonable goal for him. However, he may become outstanding in tennis or golf, and satisfy his desire to take part in sports.A girl who had plain features may decide that she cannot win popularity with her face, and so she may try to develop an interesting personality, which eventually will get her much further. In this situation, she must change her method of achieving her goal. So, although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems, it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.68.The underlined phrase in the second paragraph probably means .A.point out B.look into C.press down D.give up 69.What does the author mean by taking example from the boy who wanted to be a debaterA.We can escape from problems by making excuses for failures.B.We can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.C.It is necessary to change our method of achieving our goal.D.It is important to be realistic in judging situations. 70.Which of the following can be the main idea of the text A.Some people who find themselves unable to solve a problem react by just giving up.B.If you are unhappy about something, face it, and try to state the problem in a few words.C.All young people go through the same difficult process that you are going through.D.Although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems, it is important to study the situation andmake a wise decision about what to do.71.The writer expresses his arguments by .A.reasoning and giving examples B.introducing and making comparisonsC.explaining and giving figures D.describing and making commentsEMy bookshelves are full of dust — and with good reason. When it comes to cleaning that part of my home, I suffer from the most serious case of avoidance (回避反响症).The thing is this: when I do set out to clean and re-organize my books, which seldom happens, I place myself into a really bad situation. No sooner do I take a title from the shelf, blow off the dust, and wipe down the cover than I find myself sitting on the floor with legs crossed and my back against the wall. Pretty soon books get piled up on my legs as I am reunited with old friends. It is as if these books have voices, and each wants to say its piece. “Remember me I was given to you when you went into the Navy, so that you would never lack for companionship,〞one whispers. Another says, “I was your first book of poems, given to you before you learned to love poetry.〞And a third, “I was the book that made history so attractive to you.〞Perhaps the greatest pleasure of re-organizing my books are the surprises — or better said, reunions — that occur. During my latest book-cleaning adventure, I found one that had fal len behind the shelf: “Tales of Edgar Allan Poe.〞Not an unusual title, but the words written on the first page made it very special: “With Love from Mom and Dad, C hristmas 1965.〞What’s this A book on the physics of lasers〔激光〕. It is filled with mathematical statements, and I had bought itat a library sale when I was 12, not long after the laser had been invented. I couldn’t understand a bit of it, but I did learn what “laser〞meant. What I end up with when I empty my bookshelves is a cross-section (横剖面) of my personal history. It’s like a road cut where one sees all the layers of rock going back through time to the beginning of the simplest life forms. The books I’ve read — and kept — are not just old friends. They are my résumé.72.What can be inferred about the authorA.He is too busy to tidy up his bookshelves.B.He considers his books treasured possessions.C.He has made a lot of notes in his books.D.He is a lover of science books.73.By saying that his books have voices, the author means .A.they bring back happy memoriesB.they are recorded in human voiceC.they say a lot about human historyD.they offer good topics for discussion74.What does the author enjoy most from re-organizing his booksA.Finding some missing books.B.Putting books in good order.C.Learning something new from the books.D.Rediscovering interesting stories behind some books. 75.By sharing his own experience, the author wants to express that .A.the course of cleaning his bookshelves is like going back to his historyB.he has suffered from the most serious case of avoidanceC.the re-organizing of his books is a surprising adventureD.the books on his bookshelves have voices参考答案。

From good reading we can derive pleasure, companionship, experience, and instruction. A good book may absorb our attention so completely that for the time being we forget our surroundings and even our identity. Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life. It increases our contentment when we are cheerful, and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading, our contact with good books should never fail to give us enjoyment and satisfaction. With a good book in our hands we need never be lonely. Whether the characters portrayed are taken from real life or are purely imaginary, they may become our companions and friends. In the pages of books we can walk with the wise and the good of all lands and all times. The people we meet in books may delight us either because they resemble human friends whom we hold or because they present unfamiliar types whom we are glad to welcome as new acquaintances. Our human friends sometimes may bore us, but the friends we make in books need never weary us with their company. By turning the page we can dismiss them without any fear of hurting their feelings. When human friends desert us, good books are always ready to give us friendship, sympathy, and encouragement. One of the most valuable gifts bestowed by books is experience. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide range of experiences, but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books. Whether we wish to escape from the seemingly dull realities of everyday life or whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can. To travel by book we need no bank account to pay our way; no airship or ocean liner or stream-lined train to transport us; no passport to enter the land of our heart's desire.Through books we may get the thrill of hazardous adventure without danger. We can climb lofty mountains, brave the perils of an Antarctic winter, or cross the scorching sands of the desert, all without hardship. In books we may visit the studios of Hollywood; we may mingle with the gay throngs of the Paris boulevards; we may join the picturesque peasants in an Alpine village or the kindly natives on a South Seaisland. Indeed, through books the whole world is ours for the asking. The possibilities of our literary experiences are almost unlimited. The beauties of nature, the enjoyment of music, the treasures of art, the triumphs of architecture, the marvels of engineering, are all open to the wonder and enjoyment of those who read.16. Why is it that we sometimes forget our surroundings and even our identity while reading?A. No one has come to disturb you.B. Everything is so quiet and calm around you.C. The book you are reading is so interesting and attractive.D. Your book is overdue; you are finishing it at a very fast speed.17. How would you account for the fact that people like their acquaintances in books even more?A. They resemble human friends exactly.B. They are unfamiliar types we like.C. They never desert us.D. They never hurt our feelings.18. Which of the following is true?A. Your wish to visit some far-off place can be realized through the pages of the books.B. To escape from the dull realities of everyday life you should take up reading.C. Books can always help you to live a colourful life.D. You may obtain valuable experience from reading good books.19. The word “weary” means ______.A. “to attract someone’s attention”B. “to distract someone’s attention”C. “to make someone very tired”D. “to make someone interested”20. “... the whole world is ours for the asking” implies that ____________.A. in books the world is more accessible to usB. we can ask to go anywhere in the worldC. we can make a claim to everything in this worldD. we can make a round-the-world trip free of charge(D)本书主要讲读好书的益处。

This is actually a paper-based battery. No, it doesn't look like any of those metal batteries running flashlights or smartphones. In these systems, the battery can be printed on a page. The battery's power consists of living bacteria.Paper electronics are simple to make and inexpensive, notes study leader Seokheun Choi, an engineer at Binghamton University. They need no electrical outlet to recharge. They just need more bacteria, which can be found everywhere — including dirty water."Most batteries use chemicals to generate electricity. Substituting bacteria can be an advantage," Choi says. "They are cheap and self-repairing." What paper-based batteries won't do is generate much power. They do, however create enough to run small devices in faraway or dangerous places — such as a battlefield. They might also find use in medicine. For instance, they might power tiny sensors, such as the types used to measure blood sugar. This invention is based on an observation made more than a century ago — that microbes (微生物) produce electricity as they digest food. Scientists refer to the bio-batteries based on this principle as microbial fuel cells. A fuel cell generates electricity like a regular battery. But a regular battery stops producing electricity when its inner chemical reactions stop. A fuel cell uses fuel that can be refilled. In this case, bacteria serve as the fuel. By refilling more microbes, as needed, scientists can keep these fuel cells running.Lab tests have shown that the new battery can produce a current. Now, Choi and his team are looking at ways to increase the power. They're studying different shapes and materials for the anode and cathode (正负极). They're also looking for the best ways to combine batteries for more power. The beauty of the paper devices is that you can simply fold them to connect them. And they surely will be a trend in the near future.(1)What makes the paper-based batteries different from other batteries?A. They are mainly used to run smartphones.B. They use bacteria to generate electricity.C. They are used to decorate small devices.D. They take a much shorter time to recharge.(2)What can the paper-based batteries do?A. Power tiny devices.B. Lower blood sugar levels.C. Produce much electricity.D. Change chemicals in the paper.(3)What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?A. The application of the new battery.B. The characteristics of the paper batteries.C. The intention to invent the device.D. The working principle of the invention.(4)What is the author's attitude towards the development of the paper-based batteries?A.Defensive.B.Optimistic.C.Doubtful.D.Ambiguous.【答案】(1)B(2)A(3)D(4)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了纸基电池的原理,这种电池可以通过微生物进行充电,同时,该电池也可以运用在医学方面,如测试血糖等。

二轮复习最新高考英语阅读理解精选含答案一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors' home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of his daughters, "The house next door is on fire!" He went to investigate. That's when he saw two women and a girl hysterical (歇斯底里的)on their porch."The baby's in there!" one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside. "The baby" was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman's granddaughter and a playmate of Surrell's three youngest kids, then 8, 10, and 12. The other two on the porch were Tiara's aunt and cousin.Entering the burning house was like "running into a bucket of black paint," Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been hazardous for anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺疾病), they were life-threatening. He was the last person who should have run into a burning building--- he has lung disease. But that didn't stop him. After a few minutes in the smoke filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. "Where is Tiara?" he asked desperately." The second floor." her aunt shouted back.Surrell knew he couldn't hold his breath for long. So he uttered a little prayer, "Well, Lord, this is it. You gotta help me, because I'm not coming out without that little girl." Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar layout to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath."Baby girl, where are you?" His throat and lungs burned as if he'd inhaled fire instead of the smoke and soot in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. ①.Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An ominous thought crossed his mind: I'm probably gonna die up here. Finally he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara toward him. ②Her body was limp and she wasn't breathing. He scooped her into his arms and stood. He felt the heat of the flames on his cheeks. Turning, he fought through the smoke and ran blindly into the blackness. The next thing he knew, he was at the front door, then outside. Surrell put Tiara down on the porch.③. A voice told him, "You have to breathe for her." He started CPR -the first time he'd ever done so. The women stood behind him, praying silently. Soon a soot-filled cough came from Tiara's throat. Surrell gave five more breaths. She coughed again. Her eyes flickered. He gave one final breath. She opened her eyes and took a breath on her own.④.Their eyes met. Surrell hugged her tight and said, "Uncle's got you." Soon after, his throat closed off.Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later, having suffered severe burns to his windpipe and the upper portion of his lungs. He spent over a week in the hospital. Tiara was released from the hospital after a few days. The fire exacerbated Surrell's pulmonary condition, and he feels the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. "It's a small price to pay," he says. "I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Wouldn't giveit a second thought."(1)Michael Surrell ran to save "the baby" mainly because______.A.he was on the scene casuallyB.he was driven by instinctC.his daughter was in dangerD.his own house was at risk(2)Why should Surrell be the last person to run into a burning building?A.The fire department had been called.B.He was 64 years old at that time.C.The condition was life-threatening.D.He had chronic pulmonary disease.(3)In the course of rescue, Surrell______.A.had to move out for breath because of smokeB.was prevented by the overwhelming smokeC.made it to the second floor without any troubleD.could clearly hear the sound made by the baby(4)Which blank could the sentence "Then a weak but distinct voice emerged" be best put in?A.①B.②C.③D.④(5)From the last paragraph, we can learn that______. .A.Surrell came back to life a week laterB.Tiara had to stay in hospital for weeksC.Surrell's disease became more seriousD.Tiara needed further extra medication(6)What can be a suitable title for the passage?A.Breathe for HerB.Struggle to surviveC.A small price to payD.A man with lung disease【答案】

A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below 16℃.Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world.Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world. In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources (资源): land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example,a lot of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now, but in the long run it actually reduces the world’ s wood supply. Rainforests are often called the world’s drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world’s shrinking rainforests.
